JOHN BUIE NICHOLSON

GREENSBORO — John Buie Nicholson, 88, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Hospice of High Point.

A 2 p.m. graveside service will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Guilford Memorial Park.

Mr. Nicholson was born June 22, 1925 in Lee County, N.C. Raised and educated in Lemon Springs, N.C., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was discharged after they gave him a trip around the world. Afterwards, he began his career with the City of Greensboro and retired as a Captain with the fire department in 1978. He was lovingly known as “Paw Paw” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was a kind and gentle person to everyone he knew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Moore Nicholson.

He is survived by a sister, Barbara Kent, of Sanford, N.C., as well as a brother, Clyde Nicholson of Lemon Springs, N.C. He is also survived by a son, Gary Nicholson. Also surviving are a grandson, John (wife, Michelle) of Greensboro, and a granddaughter, Carrie (husband, Mason) of Asheville, N.C. Additionally, he is survived by great-grandchildren, Jules, Silas, Ella and Logan.

NELLIE MAE UNDERWOOD HOLDER

SANFORD — Nellie Mae Underwood Holder, 71, died Thursday (8/1/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Lee County on Oct. 5, 1941, to the late Charlie Arnold Underwood and Lizzie Mae Windham Underwood. She was a member of Calvary Missionary Methodist Church. Prior to her retirement, she had worked at Magneti Marelli, Koury Company, Eaton and the Fairview Dairy Bar. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Lewis Clausen Underwood, Leon Hilliard Underwood, Willie John Underwood, Hubert Wade Underwood and Richard Lee Underwood.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Holder; a son, Jason Holder of the home; and a sister, Edna Underwood Marion of Carthage.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Willie and Debbie Underwood at 5152 Sheriff Watson Road, Sanford.

Funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Missionary Methodist Church with Pastor Curtis Norris and the Rev. Steve Morrow officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

PAUL AARON GODFREY

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Paul Aaron Godfrey, 34, died Thursday (7/25/13).

He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and stationed in Portsmouth, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Mikala of Portsmouth, Va.; his mother, Priscilla of Pinehurst; his father, Michael of Wilmington, and his brother, Brian of Cary.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment will be at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family request in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Wounded Warrior Project.

JAMES BENJAMIN FOX

SANFORD — Memorial service for SCPO James Benjamin “Bud” Fox, U.S. Navy Retired, 66, who died Monday (7/29/13), was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Jeff Clark with military honors.

During the service the eulogy and a poem were by his wife Gretchen, the congregation sang, soloist was Becky Blanchard and the organist/pianist was Carole Troutman.

JOHN DANIEL CAMERON

CAMERON — John Cameron, 91, of 32 Walter Lane, died Thursday (7/25/13) at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville.

He is survived by three daughters, Merrendia Gilchrist (Garner), Monique Mallette (Mark), Catherine Cutler (Willie), all of Cameron; five sons, Clarence Cameron (Gloria), Carl Cameron, Albert Cameron, Tommy Brower, all of Cameron, and Alvin Cameron (Cindy) of Moncure; his siblings, Maudline Pratt of Cameron, Ethel Lucas (Alexander) of Spring Lake and Henry Cameron of Fayetteville; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Johnsonville AME Zion Church in Cameron. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

ROY EUGENE CALCUTT

SANFORD — Roy Eugene Calcutt, 65, died Wednesday (7/31/13) at Central Carolina Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

FRANCES MATTHEWS BASS

DUNN — Frances Matthews Bass, 80, died Wednesday (7/31/13) at Golden Years Nursing Home.

She was born in Harnett County on March 18, 1933, to the late Willie Ray and Electa Amy Betts Matthews. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was a supervisor at Terre Hill sewing factory in Bunnlevel and Coats for 18 years. She also worked for over 20 years at the Dairy Freeze in Dunn.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. Tom Wagoner. Burial will be at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery near Spivey's Corner.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Bass Sr.; sons, Reuben York Jr. and wife Ann of Lillington and Robin Shawn York Sr. and wife Kathy of Elizabeth City; daughters, Shelby Avery Bailey and husband Bill, and Rose York Foushee, all of Lillington; stepson, Harold Bass Jr. of Dunn; stepdaughter, Jane Hudson and husband Will of Dunn; sisters, Ruby Lee Ray of Spring Lake and Helen Cameron of Sanford; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday at 3 p.m. prior to the service at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.

ROBERT ALEXANDER THOMAS

SANFORD — Robert Alexander Thomas, 66, died Wednesday (7/31/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rogers Memorial Chapel.

Born in Pinehurst, he was preceded in death by his parents, Watson Benjamin Thomas and Mary Margaret Rice; sister, Martha Norton, and brother, Ralph Christian. He was a carpenter with the Pinehurst Hotel.

He is survived by his wife, April Matthews Thomas; daughters, Terry Wood and husband Ed of Missouri and Cathy Thomas of Indiana; a son, Robert Thomas Jr. and wife Linda of Indiana; brothers, Buddy and Benjamin Thomas of Aberdeen; and sisters, Waddell Harris and Ella Burroughs, both of Carthage; also 10 grandchildren.

Visitation will be in the Rogers Memorial Chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

MATTIE MCNEILL STEWART

SANFORD — Graveside service for Mattie McNeill Stewart, 89, who died Tuesday (7/30/13), was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Vernon Riggins.

During the service, a son Billy Stewart played the guitar.

Pallbearers were William Colson, Adam Dull, Chris Riggins, Frank Rugh, Sean Stewart and Darren Weathington.
