SANFORD — Peggy Mae Thomas, age 80, of Sanford died on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

She was born on October 23, 1933 in Guilford County, NC to the late Clifford H. Thomas and Rachel Williams Thomas. She retired after 30 years of service from Broadway School as the secretary. Peggy was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church where she was involved with the women of the church and sang in the church choir. She greatly enjoyed the fellowship with her friends at the bi-weekly luncheons sponsored by Miller-Boles.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Eugene Thomas of Sanford; her son, Steve Thomas and wife Ann of Sanford, NC; her son-in-law, Marshall C. Bayles of Sanford, NC; her granddaughter, Ashley L. Bayles; her grandson, Aaron M. Bayles and his wife Ashley T. Bayles; and great-grandchildren, Maelyn Bayles-Littiken, Jason Thomas II, and Ryan Bayles.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Broadway Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Roda and Rev. Harold Stone officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Shallow Well Cemetery.

MONCURE — Raymond Thomas Tysor, 58, of 88 Daisy Scurlock Road, died Tuesday (12/24/13) at his residence.

He was born June 14, 1955, in Lee County to Willie Mae Rives Tysor and the late Alfred Thomas Tysor.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Luke United Church of Christ in Goldston. Viewing will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

WEST END — Amier Wayne Rogers, infant, died Thursday (12/26/13).

He was born Oct. 28, 2013, to Hali McInnis and James Rogers.

Funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Ken Rahal officiating. Burial will be at New Home Baptist Church Cemetery.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Nelda Huneycutt Jones, who died Sunday (12/22/13), was held at 3 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Jeff Clark. Burial followed at Buffalo Cemetery.

During the service the congregation sang, the soloist was Leslie Hanna and the organist was Dr. Daniel Hester.

BROADWAY — Funeral service for Larry Eugene Harrington, 80, who died Monday (12/23/13), was conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Broadway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Rodda and the Rev. Doug Houston officiating. Burial followed at the Broadway Town Cemetery.

During the service, Gene McNeill was the soloist, Faye Cameron was the pianist and the congregation sang.

Pallbearers were Richard McNeill, Ronald McNeill, Donald McNeill, Todd McNeill, David Kelly, Craig Buchanan, Ross Wood and Elmer Hunter Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Clayton Rosser, Louis Thomas Jr. and Lemar McNeill.

SANFORD — Nellie Richmond Newby, 86, of 166 Blackstone Road, died Thursday (12/26/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She is survived by daughters, Edith Newby, Wilma Newby, Elaine Newby, Mary Davis and Lydia Baldwin, all of Sanford; brother, Wilbert Newby Jr. of Sanford; sister, Maggie Newby of Sanford; and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Poplar Springs AME Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Watson Memorial-Cunningham & Sons Mortuary.

SANFORD — James Rudolph Dowdy, 69, of 345 Leslie Drive, died Wednesday (12/25/13) at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Dorathy Dowdy; son, Jeffrey Chalmers of Olivia; three daughters, Pamela Dowdy of Providence, R.I., and Shena Lambright (Tim) and Melinda Kennedy, both of Boston, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Andre McIver-Terry of Sanford and Deana Williams of Tampa, Fla.; one stepson, Gregory McIver of Sanford; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Dowdy of Boston, Mass., and Skeet Dowdy of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Brenda Bonds and Jacqueline Dowdy, both of Providence, R.I., and Linda Dowdy of Boston, Mass.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pilgrim Rest Church. Wake will be held from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

SANFORD — Lela Vera Allen, 73, died Wednesday (12/25/13).

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Rogers Memorial Chapel.

She was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Vernon Allen and Vera Thomas Allen Gunter. She was also preceded in death by a son, Curtis Reeves, and her stepfather, Laughlin Gunter.

She is survived by a brother, Fred Allen of Sanford; and several cousins.

HAW RIVER — Myrtle Chalmers, 95, died Friday (12/20/13).

Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Alston Chapel United Church of Christ.

A viewing will be held Monday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Pugh & Smith Funeral Home in Carthage and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the church.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Mutunhu (Tendai) of Mutare, Zimbabwe; one son, Tommy Chalmers of South Carolina; and five grandchildren.

ABERDEEN — Glenn P. Brooks, 90, died Thursday (12/26/13) at the Carolina House in Pinehurst.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Sudie Brooks.

He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Smith and husband Rodney of Aberdeen and Ellaine Burwell and husband Robert of Carthage; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
