SANFORD — Margaret “Peggy” McGinty, 84, of Sanford, died Friday (12/27/2013) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

The oldest of 10 children, she was born on February 28, 1929, in Grove City, Penn., to the late Harold Heasley and Lillian Cotton Heasley. She was a faithful member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Sanford. Peggy greatly enjoyed quilting, crocheting and crafting.

She is survived by her daughter, Pam Jones of Sanford, NC; her son, Ralph Sherman and wife Cathy of Asheboro, NC; six grandchildren: Amy, Jamie, Patricia, Virginia, Butch and Amber as well as nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Sherman and a son, Billy Sherman.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Sanford with the Rev. Paul Shields officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Crestview Memorial Park in Grove City, Penn. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.

BROADWAY — Theldora Cole Womack, 84, of the 300 block of Knight Road, Broadway, died Thursday (12/26/13) at Liberty Commons Nursing Facility.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cameron Grove AME Zion Church, Broadway.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn Womack Holloway (Bobby) and Josephus Womack (Marian); a sister, Louise Valentine; and her grandchildren.

SANFORD — Michael A. Smith, 46, of the 1900 block of Tramway Road, Sanford, died Wednesday (12/25/13) at UNC Hospital.

Funeral services will be noon Tuesday at Works For Christ Christian Center in Sanford.

Surviving are his parents, Bennie and Delvera Smith of Sanford; one daughter, Connie Robinson of Newport News, Va.; two sisters, Terri McLean-Francois and Rosalyn McLean, both of Norfork, Va.; one aunt; four uncles; two very special cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

CONCORD — Belinda Kay Reese Houck, of Douglas Avenue, died Thursday (12/26/13) at CMC-NorthEast in Concord.

The family is planning a private memorial service.

Houck was born Jan. 5, 1950, in Spartanburg, S.C., to the late Vernon and Helen Stone Reese. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Womack, and a brother, William Reese.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis H. Houck; sons, Bill Passmore and wife Crystal of Harrisburg and Al Sutphin and wife Michelle of Statesville; six grandchildren; sister, Valerie Passmore of Landis; and brother, Thomas Reese of Asheville.

CARTHAGE — Alice Christine Routh Beal, 85, resident of Tara Plantation in Carthage, died Friday (12/27/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

A graveside memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church cemetery in Bennett with the Rev. Tim Strider officiating.

She was a Chatham County native, and a retired nurse’s aide.

She is survived by her brother, Bernard “Frog” Routh and his wife Peggy of Bennett; and sister-in-law, Mozelle Routh of Bennett. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

SANFORD — Peggy Mae Thomas, 80, of Sanford died on Thursday (12/26/13) at Central Carolina  Hospital in Sanford.

She was born on Oct. 23, 1933, in Guilford County, to the late Clifford H. Thomas and Rachel Williams Thomas. She retired after 30 years of service from Broadway Elementary School as the secretary. She was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church where she was involved with the women of the church and sang in the church choir.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Eugene Thomas of Sanford; her son, Steve Thomas and wife Ann of Sanford; her son-in-law, Marshall C. Bayles of Sanford; her granddaughter, grandson and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jenny T. Bayles.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Broadway Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Roda and Rev. Harold Stone officiating. The family will receive friends one  hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Shallow Well Cemetery.

CARTHAGE — Beverly Ann Smith, 63, of Carthage, died Friday (12/27/13) at her residence.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

A native of Dauphin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James Smith and Margaret Davis Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Kristen (Jeffery) Chandler of Carthage; son, Daniel Richard Bair III; four grandsons; one granddaughter; three brothers, Bishop John (Sharon) Smith of Pennsylvania, Dennis (Kay) Smith of Pennsylvania, James Smith Jr. of Pennsylvania; one sister, Nancy (Dennis) Graybill of Pennsylvania; two stepdaughters, Brandy Burger and Michelle Harrington; stepson, Ron Burger; and several other family members.

SANFORD — Clifford Cameron Dickens, 92, of the Deep River Community, died Saturday (12/28/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

PITTSBORO — Funeral service for Gregory Van Johnson, 64, of Pittsboro, who died Dec. 19, was held at 2 p.m. Friday at Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Musicians included the Johnson family. Arrangements were by Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro.



SANFORD — Funeral service for Jerry McLelland Farmer, 78, of Sanford, who died Monday (12/23/13), was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gregg Presnal officiating.

A poem “Sat” written by Farmer was read during the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pianist was Rhonda McNeill. Soloist and guitarist was Jimmy Cameron.

The congregation also sang two selections. Those attending the graveside service also sang a selection at the graveside.

Pallbearers were Chad Huffman, Mike Temple, David Vick, Laurel “Stick” Cameron, Jimmy Cameron and Lenny Ovadia.
