CLIFFORD CAMERON DICKENS

SANFORD — Mr. Clifford Cameron Dickens, age 92, of the Deep River Community, died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born in Chatham County, N.C. on May 18, 1921 to the late E. Vester Dickens and Callie Woodell Dickens. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Richardson Dickens and a sister, Mozelle Dickens. Mr. Dickens was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church and the Koinonia Sunday school class. He worked 42 1/2 years at the former CP&L as a shift foreman before his retirement.

He is survived by two sons, Greg Dickens of Sanford and Steve Dickens and wife Linda of Greenville, N.C.; one daughter, Maureen D. Aycock and husband David of Sanford; sister, Kathleen D. Burkhead of Sanford; three grandchildren, Chad Dickens, Jason Dickens and Mallory Aycock; and two great-grandchildren, Josh and Alex Dickens.

Funeral service was held Monday, December 30, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery. The family received friends in the fellowship hall of the church from 12:30 p.m. until the funeral hour.

RUTH GRACE BREWNER

CHICAGO, IL — Ruth Grace Brewner (nee Biesenthal), 87 years young, born on November 29, 1926 in Chicago, passed away peacefully December 19, 2013.

Formerly of Hoffman Estates, IL and then Sanford, NC, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband James of 51 years, brother Arthur Biesenthal, and son Todd. Before marriage, she graduated from Northern Illinois Teachers College with a degree in math and a minor in music.

Ruth is survived by four sons: Kevin and Maggie (nee Shallcross) of St. Charles, IL, Eric and Diane (nee Mitchell) of Colorado Springs, CO, Kurt and Alexandra (nee Protas) of St. Charles, IL and Scott and Laura (nee Scarborough) of Durham, NC.; and eight great-grandchildren: Jared and Jordan; Sean, Hillary Nothhaft, Courtney, and Kyle; Mason and Lara; and four great-grandchildren.

A long-time aficionado of classical music, she was instrumental in the Jonesboro United Methodist Church vocal and bell choirs. She will be missed by her family and her friends in Sanford.

A memorial service will be held at the Jonesboro United Methodist Church on January 11, 2014 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth’s name to the North Carolina Symphony.

CARTHAGE — Emily Ann Caddell, 56, died Friday (12/27/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Victory Community Baptist Church in Carthage. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m.

A native of Moore County, she was the daughter of the late William “Buck” Collins and Joyce McCleney Collins. She worked as a cook for the Moore County Jail.

She is survived by daughters, Jill Whitty and husband Josh of Florida and Savannah Waller of Southern Pines; sister, Kay Wilson and husband Dan of West End; three brothers, William Collins Jr. and wife Sue of Vass, Richard Collins and wife Barbara of West End, and Owen Collins and wife Susan of Carthage; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

CLAYTON ODELL HOLDER

ABERDEEN — Clayton Odell Holder, 70, died Saturday (12/28/13) at Firsthealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Aberdeen with the Rev. Mike Branscome officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines.

He was a native of Aberdeen, attended Aberdeen High School and graduated in 1961. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked for JP Stevens for 41 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cletus and Hazel Holder; his wife, Harriett Holder; and brothers, Calvin Holder and Barney Holder.

He is survived by two children, Chris Holder and wife Jeanie of Beaufort and Misty Warnock and husband Ken of Aberdeen, and two grandchildren.

A visitation was held Monday at Powell Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

SANFORD — Funeral service for James Samuel Funderburk, 84, who died Thursday (12/26/13), was conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with Chaplain Joel Cameron presiding. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Joey Holmes. Organist was Dorothy Hales. Soloist was Britton Buchanan. Britton Buchanan also sang a solo at the graveside.

Pallbearers were Pat Cameron, Daniel Cameron, Ben Thomas, Frankie Spivey, Mark Godfrey and Ed Miles.

EDWARD LEE HEATH

SANFORD — Funeral service for Edward Lee Heath, 75, who died Wednesday (12/25/13), was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Dudley officiating. Burial followed at the Broadway Town Cemetery.

During the service, Faye Cameron was the pianist and the congregation sang. Eulogy was given by Valerie Broadway.

Pallbearers were Darryl Clark, Tim Sloan, Bradley Wallace, Tommy Downing, Cecil Cameron and Bill Weldon.

JOHN WALTER WILLIAMS

SANFORD — John Walter Williams of Las Vegas, Nev., died Monday (12/23/13).

He was born Aug. 6, 1944, to Bonnie Womble Williams and Alexander Williams Sr. in Sanford.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Williams of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sons, Rodney Heck of Siler City and Tony Williams of Las Vegas, Nev.; four brothers, Bennie L. Williams, James B. Chalmers, Donnie R. Williams and Ivory Williams; seven sisters, Evelyn White, Emma J. Thompson, Sonya M. Kill, Blondine Williams Hawkins, Theresa A. Spinks, Bonnie F. Williams and Rachel L. Williams; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted in Las Vegas, Nev.

The family will hold a memorial celebration of his life at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilrik Ballroom in Sanford.

FAYETTEVILLE — Funeral service for Emmett Scott, 65, of Nugget Court, who died Thursday (12/19/13), was held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Cunningham & Son’s Chapel in Fayetteville. Burial was at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Scott; son, Arnold Scott; brothers, James Scott, Linwood Daye and Michael Daye; sisters, Patricia Scott, Fontaine Scott and Rosalyn Daye; and five grandchildren.

BROADWAY — Funeral service for Theldora Cole Womack, 84, of 315 Knight Road, who died Thursday (12/26/13), was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Cameron Grove AME Zion Church in Broadway with the Rev. Ray Owens and the Rev. Endora Womack officiating. Burial was at the Paradise AME Zion Church cemetery.

The Cameron Grove AME Zion Church choir sang.

SANFORD — Funeral service for James Rudolph Dowdy, 69, who died Wednesday (12/25/13), was conducted Sunday at Pilgrim Rest Church with Pastor Billy Buie officiating.

The church choir sang.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Peggy Mae Thomas was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Broadway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Rodda and the Rev. Harold Stone officiating.

Three special songs were played by Jimmy Jones and Marcus Parker was soloist.

Pallbearers were Craig Buchanan, Tim Sloan, Barry Thomas, Jimmy Thomas, Louis Thomas and Ronnie Hunter. Honorary pallbearer was Billy Buchanan.

Following the funeral, a graveside service was held at Shallow Well Cemetery.

SANFORD — Scott Wesley Smith, 57, of Durham, formerly of Sanford, died Sunday (12/29/13) in Raleigh.

He was born July 26, 1956, in Morristown, Tenn.

He is survived by his parents, Roy and Nancy Smith and the late Velma W. Smith; sister, Martha S. Cagle (Reid) of Sanford; brothers, Gordon E. Smith (Debbie) of Sanford and Jeffrey L. Smith (Cathy) of Cleveland, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday from 6 until 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Flat Springs Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. immediately following the visitation. Dr. Gary McCollough and the Rev. Donald Burns will officiate at the service.
