STEVE DARBY JR.

SOUTHERN PINES — Steve Darby Jr, 75, of Southern Pines, died Saturday (12/28/13).

A funeral mass will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor Jeffrey A. Ingham officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church with light refreshments. A private inurnment will be held at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

He was born in Pinehurst on Dec. 10, 1938, to Steve and Mary Elizabeth Lawrence Darby Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve Darby Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Ballance; and a sister, Elizabeth Peele.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Garcia Darby; one son, Robert Scott Darby of Southern Pines; two stepchildren, Carey Henderson and husband Robert of Southern Pines and Toby Thompson of Aberdeen; three grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

SUZANNE BRYAN VALENTI

VASS — Suzanne Bryan Valenti, 63, of Vass, died Sunday (12/29/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital of Pinehurst.

A funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst with the Rev. Edward J. Burch officiating. Rite of committal will be held at a later date at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

She was born in Long Island, N.Y. on Sept. 6, 1950, to William and Edna Bryan. She just recently retired from the family restaurant, Valenti’s in Vass. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Edna Bryan; stepfather, Frederick Benesch; one sister, Sheryl Bryan Rose.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Valenti; two children, Keith Valenti and Adam Valenti and wife Lucy, all of Vass; three brothers, Bart Bryan, Deric Benesch and Dane Benesch; two sisters, Laura Johnson and Merillee Jesseph; two grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Cox Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m.

OLA NORDAN HARDY

CAMERON — Ola Nordan Hardy, 96, of Cameron, died Monday (12/30/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pineywood Baptist Church with Pastor Paul McClure officiating. Viewing wil be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

She was born in Mamers on Aug. 30, 1917, to John Lewis and Mattie Fuquay Nordan. She was a member of Pineywood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Lewis and Mattie Fuquay Nordan; her husband, Coley M. Hardy; two sons, Jerry M. Hardy and Bobby C. Hardy; three sisters, Mae Nordan, Nolie Patterson and Alda Parker; three brothers, Willard, Billy and Arnold Nordan.

She is survived by four children, Charles M. Hardy and wife Ann of Raleigh, Irene Johnson and husband James E., and Mildred Reynolds, all of Cameron, and Janice Marsh and husband Larry of Carthage; 24 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

SHIRLEY NEEDHAM TYNER

BEAR CREEK — Shirley Needham Tyner, 73, formerly of Carthage, died Sunday (12/29/13) at the residence of her daughter in Bear Creek.

Funeral service will be held at the home, 11011 Siler City-Glendon Road, on Thursday at 11 a.m. A graveside committal will be held at 2 p.m. at Pinebluff Cemetery.

A native of Lee County, she was a daughter of the late William Medley and Emma Irene Bennett Needham. A 1959 graduate of Carthage High School, she attended Sanford Business School and worked for Carthage Fabrics early in life. She later worked several years with the Moore County Clerk of the Court and in tax administration. She also worked with Arthur Rowe, Attorney at Law. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Allen Tyner Jr.; three brothers, Alton, Bill and Joseph; and a sister, Edith.

She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Persons and husband Scott of Bear Creek; a son, Robbie Tyner and friend Angie of Carthage; one granddaughter.

The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home today from 5 until 7 p.m. and other times at the residence of Dawn and Scott Persons, 11011 Siler City-Glendon Road, Bear Creek.

SANFORD — Estella W. Gales, 98, died Monday (12/30/13) at Westfield Rehabilitation Center.

She is survived by a niece and nephew.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Broadway. Burial will follow at Cameron Grove A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery in Broadway.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. today at Watson Memorial - Cunningham & Sons Funeral Home.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Nellie Richmond Newby, 86, who died Thursday (12/26/13), was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Poplar Springs AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Saundra Bullock-Hunter officiating. Also participating in the service were Apostle Halvester Gampton, the Rev. Fred Webb Sr. and the Rev. Barry Palmer. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Flower bearers were friends of the family.

CLIFFORD CAMERON DICKENS

SANFORD — Funeral service for Clifford Cameron Dickens, 92, of the Deep River community, who died Saturday (12/28/13), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Organist was Gail Luck. The congregation sang. The Harmonettes consisting of Fran Thomas, Linda Hunt and Judith Nance sang two selections.

Pallbearers were Bobby Powell, Davis Harris, Tom Luck, Bobby Hurley, Chad Dickens and Jason Dickens.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.
