DANIEL BENJAMIN TAYLOR

SANFORD — Daniel Benjamin Taylor, 83, of 114 SanLee Drive, died Saturday (12/28/13) at Health Hospice House.

He was born April 29, 1930 to James C. and Octavia Epps Taylor.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at House of Refuge Church on Lower Moncure Road. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Taylor; two sons, Benjamin Matthews (Patricia) of Sanford and Benjamin Maurice (Shelia) of Farmville; four daughters, Carol Palmer Farrow (Tony) of Salisbury, Faye Bellamy of Clarksville, Tenn., Jacqueline Taylor-Swann (Edward) of Swann Station and Wanda Shaw (Bernard) of Sanford; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, family members and friends.

GEORGE THOMAS COX

SANFORD — George Thomas Cox, 72, of 226 Tally Ave., died Monday (12/30/13) at Liberty Commons.

He is survived by his wife, Cora Lee Patterson Cox of Erwin; daughter, Caroline Cox of Sanford; stepdaughter, Sybil Patterson of Sanford; two grandsons, one aunt, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at C.E. Willie Funeral Chapel.

MYRTLE DOWD MCCALLUM

CARTHAGE — Myrtle Dowd McCallum, 97, died Tuesday (12/31/13).

She was a lifelong resident of Carthage and member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Carthage High School, Wingate College and Queens College. She worked for 30 years with Moore County Social Services in Carthage. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carlton A. McCallum; sisters, Doris Dowd, Frances Dowd and Carolyn Keith; and daughter-in-law, Harriet Deaton McCallum.

She is survived by her sons, Donald A. McCallum and Carlton L. McCallum and wife Peggy, all of Seven Lakes, and John T. McCallum and wife Kathy of Raleigh; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A service of interment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cross Hill Cemetery, followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Rick Martindale. Following the service, there will be a reception in the church fellowship hall.

The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home on Friday from 5 until 7 p.m.

PITTSBORO — Theresa Alston died Tuesday (12/24/13) at UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill.

She is survived by her husband, George “Buck” Alston; two daughters, Sarahnorah Smith and Candice “Candy Kane” Nickerson, both of Chapel Hill; one son, Samuel Ellis (Sam) of Pittsboro; four sisters Aleacia Fisher, Donna McIntyre, Traci Briggs, Gwendolyn “Wendy” Alston (Terry), all of Pittsboro; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Pittsboro.

BENTLEY CHASE PATTON

CAMERON — Bentley Chase Patton, infant son of Carlton Alton Patton III and Heather Diane Christian Patton of Cameron, died Monday (12/30/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Diane Morrison of Cameron and John Christian of Lillington; maternal great-grandparents, Iva Christian and Norman Christian of Lillington; paternal grandparents, Carlton Alton Patton Jr. and Sandra Boggs and stepgrandfather Kyle, all of Cameron; paternal great-grandparents, Carlton Patton Sr. and Flora Patton, and Waylon and Linda Marks, all of Cameron, and Dallas and Jean Boggs of South Carolina.

Funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Hillmon Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne O’Quinn officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary following the graveside service.

WILLIAM DOYLE WILKIE

BUTNER — William Doyle Wilkie, 87, of Burlington, formerly of Butner, died Tuesday (12/31/13) at White Oak Manor in Burlington.

He was born in Chatham County on Jan. 7, 1926, son of Issac Doyle Wilkie and Lola Powers Wilkie. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mae Ozment. He was a member of Butner First Baptist Church.

Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Haywood Independent Bible Church Cemetery by the Rev. Garland E. Smith.

He is survived by one nephew and several cousins.

Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Moncure.

 

A.J. PHILLIPS

BEAR CREEK — A.J. “Tom” Phillips, 86, of 7792 N.C. Highway 42, died Wednesday (1/1/14) at his residence.

He was a native of Chatham County and was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Glendon Independent Christian Church.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Glendon Independent Christian Church in Glendon with the Rev. Robert Yandle and the Rev. Joe Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley T. Phillips; daughter. Julie Martindale and husband Marvin of Bear Creek; son, Dean Phillips of the home; two grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; sisters, Hazel McAdoo and Dorothy Meadows, both of Greensboro.

The family will receive friends at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett from 6 to 8 p.m. today and other times at his home.
