GULF — Martha Ann Gaines Foushee, 73, of Gulf died Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Foushee was born in Chatham County on September 11, 1940, the daughter of Fred Lacy and Olivia (Jordan) Gaines. She was a homemaker and had been a caregiver for children. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Lonnie Lester Gaines and Larry Thomas Gaines.

She is survived by her husband: Roy Clayton Foushee, daughters: Lori Stack and husband Tommy of Sanford, Martha Jean Woody of Bear Creek, Jeanette Christine Foushee of Gulf, Annette Keyser and husband Arvil of Broadway; son: Harold Foushee of Goldston; grandchildren, Ginger Sparks and husband, Gavin Cummings, Holly Stack, Ashley Stack, Barbara Jean Woody, William Woody and wife Nicole, Skylar Keyser, Leia Keyser, Christopher Foushee, Eli Foushee, Olivia Foushee; great-granddaughter, Aubrey Woody; brother: Dennis Ray Gaines and wife Barbara of Goldston.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplin Ann Ritter officiating. Burial will be in Gaines Grove Cemetery, Goldston.

MAMERS — Mrs. Vila Ellis Michaels, 75, of Mamers died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington.

She was a life-long resident of Harnett County, the daughter of the late Larry Junion and Mary Margaret Butler Ellis. Mrs. Michaels was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Jack Michaels. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Honesty and integrity were the cornerstones of her life with her family.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Chapel with Rev. Bill Altman officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and other times at the home of Larry and Shannon Michaels.

Mrs. Michaels is survived by son, Larry Michaels and wife Shannon of Mamers; grandchildren, Leanne Michaels, Jack Michaels and Derick Bouchard; great-granddaughter, Madison Michaels; brother, Billy Ellis and wife Evelyn of Anderson Creek; her “fur baby” Babydoll and her dear friends, Joyce Cooley and Lisa McCauley.

SILER CITY — Amanda Michelle Stone Williams, age 57, of Siler City, N.C., passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Chatham Hospital.

She was born on April 2, 1956 in Manchester, New Hampshire. She was currently employed by Wal-Mart of Sanford. Amanda loved her animals: Boo Boo, Star, Blue, Little, Sweetie Pie, Smokie, Jingles, Bailey, Patches, Tom, Gabe, Little Orange, and Teka, all of which she rescued and cared for. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Amanda is survived by her husband, Joseph G. Williams, Jr.; her mother, Billy Ruth Stone; her daughter, Davina Dawn Newby of Colorado; her grandson, Anthony Newby of Boone, N.C.; two brothers: Jeffrey Cummings and Danny Cummings, both of Sanford, N.C. as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Travis Cummings.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Chapel in Sanford with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.

GOLDSTON — John Wayne Jacobs, 78, of  S. Main Street, Goldston died Monday, January 6, 2014 at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Mr. Jacobs was born in Lee County on August 8, 1935. Wayne was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a NASCAR fan, and in years past had assisted on the Wicker Racing Team. He helped with many area benefits, enjoyed listening to gospel music and participating in bass fishing tournaments. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Madeline Fields Beal and Wiley Beal; infant son, Ronnie Wayne Jacobs and sister, Belvedere Whitfield.

CARTHAGE — Jessie Covington, 79, of Carthage died Friday (1/3/14) at The First Health Hospice House.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Pugh & Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Cross Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held today from 1 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Surviving are sisters, Virginia Dowdy and Hattie McRae; and brothers, Winston Covington and Denzel Covington.

SANFORD — Bessie Godfrey Hilliard, 86, of Sanford died Saturday (1/4/14).

Memorial service was to be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at East Sanford Baptist Church.

She was born in Harnett County, daughter of the late Duncan Godfrey and Nannie Butler Godfrey. She was a member of East Sanford Baptist Church and well known in the community for her “baking talents." She was preceded in death by a sister, Christian Holt, and a brother, Johnny Godfrey.

She is survived by a son, Glenn Hilliard and wife Myra of Steadman; daughters, Sandra H. Kelly of Cameron and Janice Brogden and husband Richard of Sanford; a brother, Bill Godfrey of Byron, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews.

SANFORD — Allen Stewart Dowdy, 69, of Midland, died Friday (1/3/14) at his home.

He was born in Lee County on Dec. 1, 1944, to the late Hollis Van Dowdy and Ola Saunders Dowdy. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his twin infant sister and brothers, Hollis and Graham Dowdy. He worked many years as a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Ella M. Dowdy of Midland; son, Allen S. Dowdy Jr. and wife Heather of Oakboro; daughter, Kim D. Matthews and husband Raymond of Sanford; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

Funeral service was conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Dr. Gary McCollough presiding. Burial followed at Buffalo Cemetery.

Recorded music was played.

Pallbearers were Benny Wayne Hart, Wayne Williams, Stevie Cox, Michael Cox, Christopher Cox and Shawn Cox.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Edward William Perdue, 85, who died Wednesday (1/1/14), was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Swann Station Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Blackmon officiating. Burial followed at the McDougald-Holder Cemetery.

Pianist was Nancy Blackmon. Soloist was the Rev. Russell Blackmon. The congregation also sang two songs.

Active pallbearers were Jeffrey Smith, Darryl Edmond Perdue Jr., Chris Tacia III, Harris Morrison, Matt Holt and Tim Coble. Honorary pallbearers were Jake Hart and Julian Perdue.

PITTSBORO — Funeral service for James Leonard Alston, 75, who died Wednesday (1/1/14), was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church in Pittsboro with the Rev. Anthony Davis officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.

The Mitchell Chapel Male Chorus sang.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

WEST END — Opal Chriscoe Blue, 82, died Saturday (1/4/14) at her home.

Funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eureka Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Ed Boyce and the Rev. Laura Dunlap. Burial was at the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Lloyd Chriscoe and Lula McNeill Chriscoe. She owned and operated the first licensed children’s day care facility in Moore County — Jack and Jill Day Care for 27 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Elwin Blue; brothers, John R. Chriscoe, Lloyd H. Chriscoe Sr.; and sisters, Betty Lou Caddell, Lynna Davis and Louise Michael.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy B. Riddle and husband Billy of West End; sons, Tommy Blue and wife Michelle, and Travis Blue, all of Carthage, and Daniel Blue of West End; sisters, Jody Rowland and Shirley Forrest, both of West End, and Nancy Bibey of Carthage; brothers, Andrew Blue Chriscoe of Sanford and Roger Chriscoe of Robbins.

PITTSBORO — John “Jack” Eugene Carlos Dark, 50, of 448 E. Hardin St., Graham, formerly of Pittsboro, died Friday (1/3/14) at Alamance Hospital in Burlington.

Funeral service will be conducted today at 12 p.m. at Mt. Sinai AME Church in Pittsboro. Burial will follow at the Pittsboro Community Cemetery.

CAMERON — Albert Lee Haines, 75, of Cameron, died Friday (1/3/14) at Moore Regional Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mark Haines.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Anne Holcomb Haines; daughter, Charlene Anne Krieger of Iowa; son, Albert L. Haines of Cary; sisters, Patti Jo Cleveland and Juanita Morris, both of Florida; brothers, Carroll Haines and Richard Haines, both of Florida, and Dr. Lee Mark Haines of Indiana; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
