SANFORD — Harriet Roberts Tenney, 80, passed away suddenly on June 18, 2014, at her home in Sanford, N.C.

The daughter of Harry Roberts and Amanda Matilda Britting, she was born on May 30, 1934 in Teaneck, New Jersey.

During her time in Sanford, N.C., Harriet was active in volunteering for Central Carolina Hospital and working at the polls on election days. Her home church, Turner’s Chapel, and her church family were very dear to her heart. She loved being a member because Turner’s Chapel is a Bible-teaching, mission-minded house of prayer.

While living in Sanford, she was employed by The Frontier Spinning Mills where she made lasting friendships and thoroughly enjoyed being employed with them. She always enjoyed being called back to work to fill in for vacations.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Tenney, and a daughter, Carol Walker.

Harriet is survived by her daughters, Barbara Walker Beels (Joseph) of Parsippany, N.J., and Allyson Tenney Vartabedian (Vahan) of Bethesda, Md.; stepsons, Richard Tenney of Frederick, Md., and Steven Tenney of Ridgewood, N.J.; grandchildren, Joseph Beels, Samantha Beels, Levon Vartabedian, Gabrielle Tenney and Amanda Terrey; a sister, Stella Roberts Frye of Oradel, N.J.; and her inseparable good friend, “Bud” Wyckoff of Sanford.

Burial was in Maryland on June 26, 2014, and a memorial will be held at Turner’s Chapel Church on Colon Road in Sanford at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8.

PINEHURST — Lillian Ruby Brooks, 91, died Saturday (6/28/14) at her residence.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

A native of Bell County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Walter Raleigh Miracle Sr. and Estella Howard Miracle. She was a member of the Silver Foils and a former member of Pinehurst Country Club and was an avid golfer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Preston Brooks, and two brothers, Otis Miracle and Everett Miracle.

She is survived by her children, Beverly Smith and husband Rodney of Aberdeen, Ellaine Burwell and husband Robert of Whispering Pines; four grandchildren; one sister, Mary Miracle Delay of Pinehurst; one brother, Rev. Walter Raleigh Miracle Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; and one great-granddaughter.

SANFORD — Memorial service for Marshall B. “Major” Moore, 80, of Sanford, who died Friday (6/27/14), was held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home Chapel by Chaplin Darrell Harris.

During the service, recorded music was played. Words of remembrance were given by Annette Holcomb, Loretta and Ron Nolan.

SANFORD — Bobby Thompson, 70, of 424 Goldsboro Ave., Sanford, died Monday (6/30/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born on March 2, 1944, to the late Howard and Amy Thompson in Sanford. He served faithfully as an Ordained Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Trustee at Greater Zion Holy Temple United Holy Church, Inc. He was retired from Ferrell Gas Company. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mack Steven Thompson.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn J. Thompson; two sons, Bobby Lewis Thompson, and Kent (Tina) Thompson, both of Sanford; one daughter Brenda McLean of Sanford; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Daisy Thompson of New York City, N.Y.; two brothers, Fred Thompson and Jimmy Thompson, both of New York City, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Works For Christ Christian Center. No wake is scheduled.

CAMERON — Retired Army CW3 Bruce L. Hall Sr, 76, of Cameron, died Monday (6/30/14) at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on March 7, 1938 to Louie Hall and Virginia Scherer. He served in the U.S. Army. His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. Upon retiring from the U.S. Army with over 20 years of service, he made his home in Cameron. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie Hall and Virginia Scherer; sister, Faye; and brother, Gary.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Myra Hall; children, Bruce Hall Jr. of Raleigh and Michele Matcham and husband Tony of Pinehurst; sisters, Terrie Holp of Ohio and Cheryl Hall of Florida; brother, Ronnie Hall of Florida; two granddaughters and a host of friends.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 12 Hillmon Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne O'Quinn officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home. Burial will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Sandhills State Veteran Cemetery in Spring Lake with full military honors.

BUNNLEVEL — Mary E. LaFon, 81, of Bunnlevel, formerly of Akron, Ohio, died Friday (6/27/14) at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

She was born in Spokane, Wash., the daughter of the late Daniel Weyman and Violet Mae Moore Stewart. She moved to Bunnlevel in 2012. She was preceded in death by her grandson, William J. Doyle IV.

Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Daniel R. LaFon; two sons, William J. (Susan) Doyle of Bunnlevel and Stephen C. Doyle of New Braunfels, Texas; two daughters, Diana Steinmetz of Barnardsville and Georgia Franks of Akron, Ohio; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, nieces and nephews.
