SANFORD — Bennie Ray Thaxton, 86, of 309 N. Steele St., Sanford, N.C. died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his residence with family and friends.

He was born in Green County, Mississippi on October 6, 1927 to the late Ollie Mae Harvison and Curtis Thaxton. He was a World War II veteran, U.S. Army Air Corps/Air Force Retired, and a Life member of VFW Post 5631 in Sanford, N.C. Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, sister Wydel and brother Gerald.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Abbott Thaxton of the home; daughter, Karen Thaxton Smith (Steve) of New Orleans, Louisana, and brother, Curtis Thaxton (Linda) of Carrier, Mississippi and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bennie will rest in the Columbarium at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Steele St., Sanford, N.C.

A Memorial service will be held at the church Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. Family and friends are welcome to join the family after the service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Helping Hands Clinic.

PITTSBORO — Raymond Alston, 73, of 220 Avis Alston Road, Pittsboro, died Tuesday (7/22/14) at Genesis Health Care in Siler City. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home.


SANFORD — Memorial service for Gene Patrick Kelly, 48, of Sanford, who died Sunday (7/6/14), was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Flat Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary McCollough officiating.

Organist was Gail Luck. Pianist and music minister was Leonard Harris. The Harmonettes of Flat Springs Baptist Church (Fran Thomas, Linda Hunt and Judith Nance) sang one hymn and a special recording was also played during the memorial service. A poem written by a sister, Susan, was read during the service.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.


CAMERON — Orene Sheffield Paulus, 84, of Cameron, died Monday (7/21/14) at Tara Plantation Nursing Home in Carthage.

A celebration of life will be held today at 3 p.m. at Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Cameron with Pastor Darrin Moore and Pastor John Brown officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She was born in Moore County on Sept. 25, 1929, to David Benjamin Mackie and Vicie Ella Ashburn Sheffield. She retired from Cameron Boys Camp in Cameron. She was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church and was a member of the church choir for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Josephine Barrick.

She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, William Paul Paulus; children, Paul Paulus of Clayton, Jerry Paulus and David Wicker, both of Cameron, and James Wicker of Carthage; brother, Tommy Sheffield of Louisiana; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
