DARRELL ARTRY BYERLY

SANFORD — Darrell Artry Byerly died Thursday, December 20, 2012 at his home.

Darrell was born in Sanford on May 2, 1926 to the late Will-Ella and Basil H. Byerly.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Cox Byerly; sons, Darrell Artry Byerly Jr. and wife Jennifer of Broadway, and David Alan Byerly of Apex; two granddaughters, Cory Michele Byerly and Maddie Elizabeth Byerly; two step grandchildren, Jessica and Brandon Butler; one sister, Janet Kennedy of Southern Pines.

He graduated from Sanford High School and was a member of the Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He enlisted in the US Navy during WWII.  He was a Charter Member of VFW Post #5631.

After his service in the US Navy, he attended UNC Chapel Hill where he majored in Physical Education. He was a member of the swimming and diving team, pole vaulting team, weight lifting, and gymnastics team. He earned his varsity letter with the swimming and diving team. While in college, he was a member of the Carolina Clowns who entertained at basketball and football games.

After college he worked as a Field Scout Executive with the Boy Scouts of America in Troy, NC. After returning to Sanford, he opened his Byerly’s photography studio with his wife, Margie. Darrell operated his studio for over 50 years winning many awards for his work. He was president of the NC Professional Photographers in 1985-1986. He was presented with the Southeastern Award of Outstanding Service in 1990.

Darrell was a life-long member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Brotherhood Class and a former Deacon.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday at Buffalo Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church, 202 Summit Dr., Sanford, NC 27330.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church.

LOUIS EPHRIAM WILSON

MAURY — Mr. Louis Ephriam Wilson, 34, of Maury, N.C., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012.

He was born in Denver, Colorado on August 13, 1978, to Sylvia Hight and Larry Wilson. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lois Mae Harding and Louis Canapa Wilson; his maternal grandparents, Myrtle Gaskin Hight King and Henry Alton Hight; and by an uncle, Joseph Donald Hight.

Louis attended Southern High School in Durham, N.C. before moving to New Jersey where he earned his GED. He was always studying to learn new information. He always had a good heart and welcomed helping others. Louis was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and was active in the Boy Scout program. He loved fishing, camping and his family. He will be remembered for his jokes and wittiness.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by the joy of his life, daughter Isabella Grace Mowery; brothers, Jared Harding Wilson of Lillington, N.C. and Allen Scott Wilson (Joanna) of New Jersey; a sister, Rebecca Dianne Wright (Timothy) of Grover, N.C.; aunts, Dianne Woodell (Woody) of Sanford, N.C., Frances Reaves (Bob Shepherd) of Moncure, N.C., Susan Hilliard of Pittsboro, N.C., Dolores Welch (Haywood) of Cameron, N.C., Elizabeth Goins of High Point, N.C., and Mary Linda Drake of Sanford, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

There will be a graveside service Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Shallow Well Cemetery in Sanford with Bishop Gary Hatch officiating.

ESTHER ROGERS PHELPS

TABOR CITY — Esther Rogers Phelps, age 96, formerly of Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Paschal Haywood and Mattie Belle Rachels Rogers. She was the widow of the late Henry C. Phelps. She was also preceded in death by five brothers: Artis Rogers, Leonard Rogers, Tommy Rogers, Ernest Rogers and Haywood Rogers; six sisters: Beulah Kelly, Gracie Rogers, Mattie Pearl Rogers, Elva Ferguson, Margaret Harrington and Ruby Scoggins. Mrs. Phelps was a member of Jones Street Missionary Baptist Church, Tabor City and a former member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Sanford.

She is survived by one son, David E. Harris and wife Teresa of Tabor City; three grandchildren: James Wesley Harris, Grayson Lindley Harris, Leighton Edward Harris; two great-grandchildren: Olivia Harris and Donovan Harris.

Visitation will be Friday, December 21 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday in Jones Street Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 AM by Rev. Kenneth Smith with interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

GERTRUDE JOHNSON

LILLINGTON — Gertrude (Aunt Giggie) Johnson, 87, died Tuesday (12/18/12).

She was a native of Harnett County, born to the late James Prentice and Mollie Pate Parker. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Robert Sexton Johnson; her brothers, Preston, Fred and Robert Parker; and sisters, Margaret Satterfield, Helen Parrish, Evelyn Walls and Inez Weaver. She was a member of Lillington United Methodist Church. She attended Hardbargers Business College and Campbell University and retired from work after 25 years at the Harnett County Health Department.

She is survived by several nephews, nieces and others.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home in Lillington.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lillington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmie Tatum and the Rev. John McIntyre officiating. Interment will be at Harnett Memorial Park directly following the service.

SANFORD — Larry R. Hill, 56, of 175 Poplar Springs Church Road, died Sunday (12/16/12) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Karon Hill; four daughters, Nakia Baldwin, Tawana Baldwin, Natasha Baldwin and Shenika Baldwin, all of Sanford; his mother, Sallie Emerson Underwood; brothers, James Emerson (Regina), Terry Hill (Mabel) and Walter Hill, all of Sanford; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother-in- law, Magnolia Baldwin; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Calvary Baptist Church.

MOZELLE R. BARBER

CARTHAGE — Mozelle R. Barber, 87, died Wednesday (12/19/12) at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at House of the Lord in Vass conducted by the Rev. Tom Everett and David Reynolds. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Coleman Willis and Minnie Myrtle Bailey Barber. For many years she worked for Ithaca Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Barber; and a grandson, Kevin Barber.

She is survived by son, Tony Barber of Lakeview; daughters, Diane Barber, Cathy Southerland and Darlene Maness, all of Carthage; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

LILLINGTON — Ethel Johnson Williams, 72, died Wednesday (12/19/12) at her home.

She was born in Harnett County, the daughter of Eldo Johnson Sr. and Berta Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lonnie Dean, Cecil Dean and Clyde Williams; sisters, Hazel Brown, Estelle Burgess, Maude Johnson, Narvie Hall; brothers, E.H. Johnson Jr., Franklin Johnson, Roger Johnson; and a grandson, Jonathon Upchurch.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Union United Methodist Church in Lillington with the Rev. Bill Altman and the Rev. Darrell Wood officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — William Irving Goewey, 87, died Wednesday (12/12/12) at his home.

Graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cypress Presbyterian Church Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

He is survived by two daughters, Catherine Dalton and husband Randy of Lynchburg, and Susan Goewey Carey and husband Bill of Virginia; one son, David William Goewey and wife Sarah of Virginia; one sister, Marilyn Maynard of New York; one brother, Arthur Goewey of Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Lois Catherine Goewey.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Telford Mark Fitzpatrick, 55, who died Sunday (12/16/12), was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Ira Sutton and the Rev. Matt Martin officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Frances Phillips, soloist was Pam Gunter, and the eulogy was given by Steve Fitzpatrick. Various family and friends spoke words of comfort as well. The congregation also sang one hymn.

Pallbearers were Wesley Gunter, Corey Gunter, Ford Fitzpatrick, Jason Lundy, Duncan Lundy and Kaleb Lundy.

PITTSBORO — Funeral service for Gordon Stephen Jenkins, 64, who died Saturday (12/15/12), was held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Wilburforce Mundia officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Soloists were Mary Moffitt, Michael Knight and the Knight Family Reunion sang.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea C. Belanger; three sons, Gary Belanger, Larry Silva and Gary Silva; one daughter, Lora Jones; one sister, Lillian Whittaker; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
