MERCEDES BUENO GARCIA
SANFORD — Mercedes Bueno Garcia, age 88, of Sanford died on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sanford.
Mercedes was born on September 24, 1924 in Tyrone, New Mexico to the late Margarito Bueno and Maria Flores Bueno.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Nena) Richmond and husband Phillip of Sanford, NC; a son, Al Garcia and wife Gricell of Sanford, NC; three grandchildren: Bianca Garcia, Isaac Garcia, and Andre' Garcia; two sisters: Concepcion Jiminez and Julia Valverde of El Paso, TX; and special family members from the Richmond family of Lexington, KY and Navarro family of San Diego, CA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Antonia Chavez.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home of Sanford. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. A burial will follow at Baptist Chapel in Sanford.
The Richmond family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, aides, and special friends at Liberty Commons as well as Liberty Home Care and Hospice for their compassion and care during her stay at Liberty Commons.

BETTY JOHNSON AVERITT
FAYETTEVILLE — Betty Johnson Averitt, 76, of Fayetteville, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2012.
Born in Lillington, NC, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence C. Averitt; her parents, Stanley Ray Johnson Sr. and Rachel Taylor Johnson; a sister, Margaret J. Hester; and a brother, S. Ray Johnson II. Betty grew up in Lillington, NC. She was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church where she served on the Session and as organist for about 20 years. She retired from Cavin's Business Solutions after a lengthy career.
Visitation will be at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery on Ramsey Street with the graveside service conducted at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. J. Evan Harrison.
Betty is survived by two daughters, Sue A. Creighton and her husband Roy of Raleigh; Ann Callahan and her husband Rusty of Lake Waccamaw; her grandchildren, Suzanne Griffin and husband Mike; Shannon Huffman and husband Jim; Michelle Kornegay and husband Bo and five great-grandsons. Additionally, she is survived by sister-in-law, Mrs. S. Ray Johnson; very special friends, David and Vickie Chavis and several nieces and nephews.

FAYETTEVILLE — Etta Blanche Parson Best, 83, died Tuesday (12/25/12) in Cumberland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery in Newton Grove.

BROADWAY — Leonidas Charles “L.C.” Patterson Jr., 77, died Tuesday (12/25/12) at Central Carolina Hospital.
He was born in Harnett County to the late Leonidas Charles (Lonnie) Sr. and Carrie Butler Patterson. He was a retired mechanic and farmer, and served his country in U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brothers, Roderick (Ock), Duncan, John Dacosta (J.D.), Archie and Foster; and sister, Lena M. Hughes.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Leaflet Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Thomas Spence officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
He is survived by brothers, Clyde and friend Christine Jones of Broadway, Nash and wife Marie of Linden, Dougald and wife Wallace Ann of Reidsville, and Parker and wife Mildred of Greensboro; sisters, Jennie Holland and husband Johnny of Lillington, Margaret Butler and husband Charlie of Broadway; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

She was born in Harnett County, a daughter of the late John Lacy Harrington and Betty Sloan Harrington, and was preceded in death by her husband, Gattis Buie Thomas. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Eliza H. Latchem, Lucy H. Brewer, Mary Lee H. Lewis, John Lacy Harrington Jr., C. Bragaw Harrington, Alex S. Harrington and Richard B. Harrington.
She is survived by her daughter, Katheryn Thomas Medley and husband Clem of Dunn; two sons, Gattis Buie Thomas Jr. and wife Jan of Goldston and Jeffrey Brown Thomas of Broadway; four sisters, Geneva H. Cameron and Polly H. Chandler, both of Broadway, Nell H. Pate of Spring Lake, and Virginia D. Harrington of Sanford; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

PITTSBORO — Doris Thrailkill Lemons, 86, died Tuesday (12/25/12) at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living in Pittsboro.
She was born in Chatham County on Aug. 5, 1926, the daughter of Normie Thrailkill and Elsie Seymour Thrailkill. A homemaker and caregiver most of her life, she worked as a teacher’s assistant for a time at Pittsboro Elementary School. She was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wade; and a brother.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Resa and Steve Webster of Pittsboro; son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Nikki Lemons of Raleigh; four grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Smith of Colonial Heights, Va.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pittsboro United Methodist Church with Pastors Ben Alexander and Ray Gooch presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held today from 6 until 7 p.m. at Hall–Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

He is survived by his son, Ronald G. Swann Jr. of San Diego, Calif.; brother, John Swann (Christina) of East Orange, N.J..; sisters, Donnie Swann of North Carolina and Nancy Swann of Lynn, Mass.; sister-in-law, Shirley Alston Swann of Union, N.J.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

SANFORD — Elmalene Joyce Johnson Cox died Saturday (12/22/12) at Central Carolina Hospital.
She was born April 5, 1946, to the late Alice and Alfred Johnson. She was a member of Star of Hope Baptist Church. Six siblings preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Star of Hope Baptist Church. Burial will be Saturday at St. Luke United Holy Church Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Joseph G. Cox; two daughters, Elaine Cox and Joyce Shaw, both of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Mary Wood-Hooker, Martha Gunter and Brenda Bright, all of Sanford; six sisters-in-law, Betty Lee, Sara Wood (Carl), Sylvia Judd (Howard), Barbara Lewis (Delton), Frances Johnson and Sara Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Robert Cox and Norman Cox; and a host of other relatives and friends.

LILLINGTON — Robi Joseph Williams, 14, died Saturday (12/22/12) at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn.
He was born in Lee County, son of Ted Joseph Williams and Kelli MaDora Thomas. He was a volunteer at Haven of Sanford and studied cubing and Mellargy. He was an accomplished artist and guitarist.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway with Pastor Alston officiating.
He is survived by his father, Ted Williams (Kathie Decker) of Liberty; mother, Kelli MaDora Thomas of the home; stepsister, Allison Decker of Liberty; half-brother, Nicholas Edge of Kansas; maternal grandparents, Lynda Meeks Parkhurst of Lillington and Harold Delphus Thomas of West End; paternal grandparents, Harold Williams of Texas and Marjie Williams of Nevada; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was born in Durham County, daughter of the late D. Carl Cash and Etta Nina Clark Cash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Pete Stone; sister, Virgie Lee Howard; and brothers, D.C. Cash and Herbert Cash. She was a member of the Truth Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Truth Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Humphries officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Gillead Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Jackie S. Stone of Concord; son, David Allen Seagroves and wife Stella of Apex; sister, Katie Sue Mayberry of Apex; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

SANFORD — Mary Elizabeth Stephens “Lib” Hazlewood died Monday (12/24/12) at her home.

She was born in Trenton, Tenn., daughter of the late Henry Boyd Stephens and Mary Maude Lett Stephens. She was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and preceded in death by her husband, Charles Thomas Hazlewood; and a sister, Martha Stephens Hawks.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha Jo Moberg and husband Randy of Fairview; a son, Steve Hazlewood and wife Dianna of Sanford; one sister, Hattie Jo Stephens Gerard and husband Ron of Southern Pines; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

LUNDALE, W.VA. — John Joseph Hatfield, 33, formerly of Sanford, died Sunday (12/23/12) at his home.
He was born March 12, 1979, at South Williamson, Ky., the son of Peggy Daniels Hale of Lorado and Terry Joseph Hatfield of Sydney, Ky. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Jack Blankenship; his maternal grandparents, Roy and Eurie Slone Daniels; his paternal grandfather, John Lee Hatfield; and his stepgrandfather, Leo Blankenship. He was a disabled construction worker. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by one son, Colin Jackie Hatfield of Sanford; his ex-wife, Rachael Hatfield of Sanford; one sister, Misty Dawn Hatfield of Sanford; one brother, Kevin Roy Hatfield of Lundale; paternal grandmother, Joyce Dew Hatfield of Sydney, Ky.; stepgrandmother, Mary Blankenship; his mother's husband, Gordon Hale of Lorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Becco United Baptist Church at Becco with the Rev. P.J. Tomblin officiating. Burial will follow at Home Sweet Home Cemetery in Lorado.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday at the church and one hour prior to the service at the church.

MONCURE — Funeral service for Randy Vinson Wimberly, 59, who died Sunday (12/23/12), was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Elam Christian Church with the Rev. Gary Moore officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
During the service, Marcie Lorbacher was the soloist and pianist.
Pallbearers were Woody Denton, Albert Martindale, Collins Rodd, Ben Parker, Jonathan Wimberly and Matt Parker. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Holshouser, Bobby House, Bob Burkey, Daniel Turlington, Chris Parker, Sted Strickland and Travis Strickland.
