MARION SUTTLE NEAL

SANFORD — Marion Suttle Neal, age 91, of Sanford passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Marion was born on May 28, 1921 in Black Mountain, NC to the late Zebulon Vance Suttle and Annie Stepp Suttle. She was an avid golfer until her late 80's. She enjoyed travel and attended Montreat Boarding School, now Montreat College. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1999 by her husband of 58 years, George William Neal and a special friend, George Hess. She was also preceded in death by her identical twin, Lorraine Jacobson, and sisters: Maxine Albertson and Margaret Stahl.

She is survived by two daughters: Gloria Louise Nelson of Denver, CO and Carol Neal Bradford and her husband Bill of Sanford, NC; a son, John V. Neal and wife Gail of Oak Island, NC; four grandchildren: Laura Phelps and husband Gary, Tim Bradford, Ben Neal and wife Amy and Zach Neal and wife Rebecca; 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren also survive her.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Joneboro United Methodist Church in Sanford with Rev. Hunter Preston officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.

MAUDE WILLIAMS MURCHISON

SANFORD — Mrs. Maude Williams Murchison, affectionately known as “MaMa Murk”, age 99, of Sanford died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Sanford Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Chatham County, N.C. on May 8, 1913, to the late John Daniel Williams and Martha Stutts Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Alexander Murchison; son, Jack Alexander Murchison; daughter-in-law, Estelle Murchison; son-in-law, David Linney and five brothers. Mrs. Murchison was the oldest member of East Sanford Baptist Church. She worked with her brother many years ago at Roland's Grill in Deep River and retired as the assistant cafeteria manager at McIver School.

She is survived by one son, Tony Murchison of Richmond, VA; three daughters, Alyce Clark and husband Ken, Joyce Clark and husband Vaughn, and Sharon Linney, all of Sanford; two sisters, Edna Cornaire and Kitty Logan, both of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law, Ruth Williams Johnson of Sanford; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and the funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with the Rev. Robbie Gibson and Mr. William Ellis presiding. A private burial will follow at Pocket Presbyterian Church cemetery.

ROY HENDERSON LAWRENCE

PINEHURST — Roy Henderson Lawrence, the seventh child of Thaddeus Mayo Lawrence and Alice Pender Lawrence, died on March 18, 2013 at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Care Center in Southern Pines.

Roy was born on August 29, 1923 in Hamilton, NC and moved to Sanford with his family when he was two years old. He was a graduate of Sanford High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during W.W. II where he studied meteorology and served in that field. With his military duty behind him, he entered UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated with a B.S. degree in Business. Because of his academic ability, he entered Harvard and received his master's degree from their school of Business. He then served for several years as an assistant dean in the Harvard School of Business.

Roy was hired by USM Corporation in Boston, Mass. in their finance department and later moved to Lausanne, Switzerland as financial director for the European operation which included seven countries. Upon returning to Boston, he accepted the position as international financial director for USM. When he retired and moved to Pinehurst, he participated in many cultural and charitable organizations. Roy accepted an appointment as Developmental Director for the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. He also taught several economic classes at Sandhills Community College.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Cecil, Aubrey, Lee and William Lawrence and his sisters: Evelyn Blue, Hallie Pender Jones, Gladys Botzis and Alice Murray. He is survived by two brothers, Joseph T. Lawrence and wife Betty of Sanford; and Fred Lawrence and wife Mary Edna of Seven Lakes and sister-in-law, Isabel Lawrence of Sanford. He is also survived by several nephews and nieces.

A private family burial will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford followed by a memorial service at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 312 N. Steele St., Sanford, at 11 a.m. with Father Craig Lister officiating. A visitation and reception will follow in the church parrish fellowship hall.

BROADWAY — Robert Charles Pajor, 46, died Sunday (3/17/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

A native of  Connecticut, he was a longtime resident of North Carolina. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was employed by Wilson Machine Shop in Sanford.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Broaddus officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, and other times at his home.

SANFORD — Alan Wade Spivey, 50, died Sunday (3/17/13) at his home.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home. A private burial will precede the funeral.

He was born in Lee County and preceded in death by his father, Horace Temple Spivey Sr.

He is survived by a daughter, Jessica Ann Spivey of Sanford; his mother, Magdaline Martin Spivey of Sanford; girlfriend, Teresa Maddox; brother, Horace T. “Tim” Spivey Jr. and wife Tracey of Sanford; sister, Catherine Gilmore and husband Roger of Olivia; and two uncles.

SILER CITY — Frances Ritter Hamer, 87, of Old U.S. 421 North, died Tuesday (3/19/13) at her residence.

She was born Feb. 22, 1926, the daughter of Leonard Ritter and Geraldine Donithan Bowyer. She was a native of Pulaski County, Va., and attended the Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a housewife. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald F. Hamer Sr.; two sons, Steve and Michael Hamer; and two grandsons.

She is survived by five daughters, Linda Allen and husband Billy of Siler City, Shelby Kaylor and husband Michael of Asheboro, Lana Blue of Fayetteville, Sandra Teague and husband Alan of Orlando, Fla., and Mary Sue Bare and husband Wallace of Climax; stepson, Fisher Hamer and wife Elizabeth of Siler City; stepdaughter, Dianne Russell and husband John of Green Valley, Ariz.; four sisters, Barbara Statzer and husband Bob of Johnson City, Tenn., Shirley Moss and husband Tommy of South Mills, Martha Pearce and husband W.O. of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Jean Dobbins of Dublin, Va.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the family home.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating.

IDELLE KEY EVANS

WEST END — Idelle Key Evans, 79, died Sunday (3/17/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lamms Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Willard and Anna Belle Hannon Willard. She worked for Quality Mills as a machine operator, a cashier for Harris Teeter and as a volunteer with the Bargain Box. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver W. Key, and daughters, Sharon Key and Betty Clapp.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Patterson of West End; son, Henry Key and wife Wendy of West End; a sister, Eljene Copeland of West End; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

FLORENCE SMITH

SANFORD — Florence Smith, 81, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Sanford, died Wednesday (2/13/13).

She was a member of the Villa Park Order of Eastern Star 953. She was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

She is survived by her husband, Stewart Smith; daughters, Vicki Moseley (John), Hope Sherwood and Jamie Hutchings (Ed); three grandchildren; and sisters, Jeannette Zientara and Ann Kulka.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. at Barbecue Presbyterian Church in Sanford.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Margie Monroe Walters, 87, who died Sunday (3/10/13), was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia AME Zion Church in Gulf with the Rev. Carolyn Radcliff officiating.

Soloist was Carolyn Degraffenreidt.

Pallbearers were Ather Matthews, Bennie Thompson, William Johnson, Clyde Thompson Jr. and Burnice Kelly Jr.

LESSIE MANESS MOTE

SILER CITY — Lessie Maness Mote, 75, of 900 West Dolphin St., died Sunday (3/17/13) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

She was born in Chatham County on Jan. 28, 1938, the daughter of Millard and Lula (Hicks) Maness. She was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church and had been employed at Collins & Aikman for 17 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, David George Mote; son, Jimmy Hayes Roberts Mote; one grandson; her parents; sister, Eula Darr; and brothers, J.C. and James Maness.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Mote Mashburn of Chapel Hill and Robin Michelle Mote of Broadway; two sisters, Margaret M. Phillips and Doris M. Guthrie, both of Siler City; five brothers, Tom Maness and Charlie Maness, both of Snow Camp, Gurney Maness and Earl Maness, both of Liberty, and Junior Maness of Siler City; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:30 until 2 p.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church in Siler City.

LEONARD RICHEY COOPER

PITTSBORO — Leonard Richey Cooper, 70, of LC Farm Road, died Monday (3/18/13) at UNC Hospitals.

He was born March 5, 1943 in DeKalb County, Ala., one of 12 children of Dolphy and Sindy Ledford Cooper. An electrician by trade, he retired from UNC following 30 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Mann Cooper; two sons, Tracy Lynn Cooper and Scott Aaron Cooper, both of Pittsboro; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles Cooper and Leroy Cooper, both of Alabama.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Jones presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro, and at other times at the Cooper residence.
