BROADWAY — Mary Frances Wilson Watterson, age 95, of Broadway, NC passed away peacefully Friday, March 22, 2013 at her home.

She was born in Lee County, NC, the daughter of the late Burrel Brown and Flora Jane Wilson. Mrs. Watterson was the cherished wife of 69 years to Rev. Joseph V. Watterson. She was a revered mother, a loving grandmother, a nourishing friend, and a beloved counselor who expressed tireless leadership and devotion to her family, church, and community.

The visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at Holly Springs Baptist Church Multipurpose Building.

The funeral will take place at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Holly Springs Baptist Church, Broadway with the burial to follow at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Joseph Vardell and Mary Wilson Watterson Endowed Scholarship Trust at Campbell University, in care of Holly Springs Baptist Church, 385 Holly Springs Church Road, Broadway, NC 27505.

Survivors include her sister, Nellie Knight of Broadway, NC; daughter, Gloria Watterson Foster and husband Murray and daughter Susan Beryl Watterson, both of Fairfield, Iowa; son, Joseph Vardell Watterson, Jr. and wife Dolan of Greensboro, NC and their children, Matthew Joseph Watterson and Mary Catherine Watterson.

SANFORD — Mrs. Ellen H. Carter, age 89, of Sanford, N.C., died Friday, March 22, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Carter was born on July 19, 1923, in Stokes County, N.C. to the late Sandy M. Hicks and Ann Bullins Hicks. She married Johnie C Carter, the love of her life, in 1940 and he died in October 1979. After his death, she became a community servant: she looked after the sick, cooked, and cleaned for anyone in need. Mrs. Carter was an avid bowler and an enthusiastic fisherwoman, enjoyed gardening and taking care of her yard and house. Her house and yard was always spotless. Her family and friends will always remember her as being fiercely independent.

She was preceded in death by one infant child, Johnie Carter, Jr., four brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Billy Joe Carter and wife Edna Earle and William Ray Carter and wife Candy; two daughters, Irene “Tootsie” Thomas and husband Kelly and Brenda Carter Lawson and husband Bobby; two brothers, S.M. Hicks and wife Betty of Goldston, N.C. and Bailey Hicks and wife Betty of Reidsville, N.C.; three sisters, Alice Morris and husband Ralph of Greenville, S.C., Bessie Childers and husband Ken of Kernersville, N.C., and Faye May of Greensboro; ten grandchildren, Pam Mason and husband Brian, Susan Wells and husband Andy, Michael Thomas and fiancée Jill Collins, Craig Carter and fiancée Pam Johnson, Kristi Thomas-Proffitt and husband Will, Amanda Carter and fiancé Russell Strickland, Christopher Carter, Penny Testerman and husband Mike, Timmy Lawson, Cindy Brand and husband Lee, Sherry Dobbs and fiancé Shane Delong, Wendy Markel and husband Aaron; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 24, 2013, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Hillview Christian Assembly. The funeral will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Hillview Christian Assembly with Pastor Ray Bodin, Rev. Curtis Norris, and Rev. Andy Foley officiating. Burial will follow at Cameron Grove Cemetery.

SOUTHERN PINES — Joseph Henry Carter Jr., 90, died Sunday (3/17/13) at St. Joseph of the Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Southern Pines.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home.

A native of Cumberland County, he was a son of the late Joseph Henry and Marion Kennedy Carter and was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W. II. He began his long career as an optician early in his life working for H.M. Smith Opticians and later as a partner in Hall and Carter Opticians. In 1977, he bought the business and worked many years in Southern Pines and Pinehurst as J.H. Carter Opticians before selling the company to Sandhills Optical Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Smith Carter.

He is survived by his son, Joseph H. "Jay" Carter III of Southern Pines.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Maude Williams “MaMa Murk” Murchison, 99, who died Monday (3/18/13), was held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robbie Gilson and William Ellis officiating. A private burial followed at Pocket Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Pianist was Suzanne Bowen and soloist was William Ellis.

Pallbearers were Allan Cain, Spencer Cain, Jim Cohen, Joe Brown and Don Harrington.

SWANSBORO — Milton Earl Whitney, 52, of 7345 Swansboro Loop Road, died Monday (3/18/13) at home.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Zion Church in Silverdale.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Robert Deelee Denny, 88, who died Tuesday (3/19/13), was held Friday at 2 p.m. at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Wood and the Rev. Gilbert McDowell officiating. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

Pianist was the Rev. Ronnie Byrd and the congregation sang three hymns.

Pallbearers were Lonny Jones, James Cummings, Darrell Cummings, Aaron Jones, Dustin Jones and Gene Quintana.

WASHINGTON, N.C. — Eloise Tune "Tunie" Jefferson died Thursday (3/21/13) at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Washington. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington.

She is survived by three daughters, Sue Jefferson of Washington, Lynette Thomas and husband Allen of Wilson, and Pat Gautier and husband Beverly of Sanford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nannie Sue Ferguson Tune and Ross Armstead Tune; husband, Jeff Jefferson; two brothers, Roy and Cecil Tune, and one great-grandson.
