HELEN BOONE NORWOOD

PITTSBORO — Helen Boone Norwood, 94, passed away peacefully at Unihealth PAC-Carolina Point in Durham on Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

She was born May 5, 1919, in Chatham County and graduated from Pittsboro High School. The daughter of the late Fred L. and Ruth Eubanks Boone, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Max; one brother, William “Buck” Boone; three sisters, Emily Glenn, Auburn Harris and Ethel Stroud; one daughter, Barbara Norwood Clark, and son-in-law, Rufus “Buddy” Clark. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Chatham County and active in church activities as long as her health permitted. She was employed by Chatham Mills in Pittsboro. She took great pride in her family and was a friend to all who knew her. A great cook and planner of family “get  togethers”, she loved gardening, doing things with Max, and her UNC Tar Heels.

Surviving are a sister, Anne Mathes of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, George Boone of Wichita, Kan., Ernest (Carmen) Boone of Graham; daughters, Ruth Meeks (Ralph) of Sanford, Maxine Norwood of Durham; granddaughters, Helen Clark of Chapel Hill, Janet Walker (Barry) of Roxboro; grandson, Jonathan Meeks (Erin) of Raleigh; great-grandsons, Jeffrey and Will Walker of Roxboro; and many nephews, nieces, family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Unihealth-PAC Carolina Point for the care they gave Helen during her stay there.

The funeral service for Mrs. Norwood will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, June 10, 2013 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Jones presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Hall–Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

SANFORD — Julian T. Mansfield, 96, of Sanford died Thursday morning, June 6, 2013, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery in Gulf, N.C.

Mr. Mansfield was born in Lee County, a son of the late Archie and Lila Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Johnny Mansfield, Lynn Mansfield, Clyde Mansfield and Ray Mansfield. He was an Army veteran of W.W. II and worked for many years at Coca-Cola in Sanford.

Mr. Mansfield is survived by his wife, Rachel Beal Mansfield; son, Mark Mansfield of Sanford; grandchildren, Stacy Mansfield and wife Ginny of Sanford, Brooks Mansfield of Washington, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Julian Michael Mansfield and Lana Leigh Mansfield.

SANFORD — Mr. Gary Kenneth Williams, age 59, of Sanford, NC, died Friday, June 7, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Lee County, N.C. on Oct. 19, 1953, to the late Curtis Robert Williams and Ollie Ruth Yow Williams. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Jimmy Williams, Sandra Tabayoyon, Karen Adams; and grandson, Elijah Christian Caddick. Mr. Williams was a plumber in the construction business.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Thomas Williams; son, Kenneth Michael Williams and wife Mindy of Sanford; daughter, Melissa Williams Caddick and husband David of Sanford; sister, Linda W. Starr and husband David of Sanford; and four grandchildren, B.J. Caddick, Porter Williams, Mason Caddick and Paige Williams.

The family will receive friends at the family home and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

SANFORD — Geraldine Batchelor Laws, 87, of Lemon Springs, died Friday (6/7/13) at her residence.

She was born in Harnett County on Dec. 6, 1925, to the late Arnold Batchelor and Lona Lamm Batchelor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Barker; three brothers, Richard, Elvin and Lynwood Batchelor; amd one granddaughter, Susan Darlene Deal. She was a member of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher. She was active in the Home Demonstration Club.

She is survived by her husband, Clinnie Malcolm Laws; three sons, Clinnie Laws Jr. “Mike” and wife Patty, and Kennie Laws and wife India, all of Lemon Springs, and Dennie Laws of Swann Station; three daughters, Judy L. Deal and husband Connie, and Patsy L. Richardson and husband Charles, all of Lemon Springs, and Jean L. Sellers and husband Ronnie of Laurinburg; one brother, Willard O. “Dock” Batchelor and wife Lorena of Olivia; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church with the service following at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Roberta Byrum presiding. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Immediately following the burial, the family will have an ice cream social in the church fellowship hall.

KATHRYN LAURA HESTON SCHNEIDER

SANFORD — Memorial service for Kathryn Laura Heston Schneider, 81, who died Tuesday (6/4/13) at Central Carolina Hospital, was conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vernon Riggins officiating. The obituary was read by Treva Godfrey and the scripture reading and comments were by Charlie Bryant.

Recorded music was played.

The family received friends at the funeral home following the memorial service.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Jerome Antino “JJ” Bester, 28, who died Saturday (6/1/13), was held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Try Jesus Ministries with Apostle Joseph Green, the Rev. Walter Cotton, Apostle Julia Harris, Minister Lynn McIver and Pastor Larry Holmes officiating.

Pallbearers were friends and family.

Musicians were Freddie Murchison, Claiborne and New Gospel Winds.

Arrangements were by Elizabeth Street Mortuary in Spring Lake.

HELEN BRITT SPIVEY

CARTHAGE — Helen Britt Spivey, 72, died Friday (6/7/2013) at Pinelake Health & Rehab Center.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Putnam Friends Church with the Rev. Billy Joe Brady officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, she was the daughter of the late Ellis Britt and Lee Garner Britt. She retired from Carthage Fabrics with 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Spivey; grandson, Cooper Spivey; sisters, Ginger Purvis and Blanche Teague; and a brother, Stephen Britt.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lendon E. Spivey; a daughter, Linda Spivey Taylor of Carthage; a son, John Spivey of Carthage; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home.

JACK CRAIG

ABERDEEN — Jack Craig, 83, died Thursday (6/6/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Pine Rest Cemetery in Robbins with the Rev. Robert Craig officiating.

He was born in Sanford and lived in Durham. He loved baseball and played American Legion for several teams. He signed with the New York Yankees organization and was later released due to a knee injury. He owned and operated auto parts businesses in Robbins and Pittsboro for many years. He was a son of the late Leonard and Carrie Pendergrass Craig, and was preceded in death by sister, Jane Craig Creery.

He is survived by his wife, June Melvin; daughter, Vickie Craig Odom of Robbins; son, Ted and wife Sandra of Robbins; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Poe and Doris Raper, both of High Point, Carrie Lynn Smith of Sanford, and Shirley Mutter of Durham; and brother, Bill Craig of Lake Junaluska.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Craig, 944 Flint Hill Church Road, Robbins.

KENDALL EARL RICKETSON

BROADWAY — Kendall Earl Ricketson, 48, died Friday (6/7/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1964, to Mary Katherine Roundtree Ricketson and Marvin Ricketson. He was a graduate of Western Harnett High School and attended East Carolina University.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Catherine Ricketson of Vidalia, Ga.; his father, Marvin Ricketson and stepmother, Sue Sloan of Sanford; two brothers, Marvin “Ricky” Ricketson Jr. and wife Sheila of Cumming, Ga., and Tommy Ricketson of Sanford; sister, Cassandra Smith and husband Robert of Sanford; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Norris officiating. Burial will follow at Morris Chapel Cemetery.

SANFORD — Lucille Buie, 87, of 595 Hickorydale Lane, died Wednesday (6/5/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She is survived by sons, John Buie (Marion) and Ricky Buie (Lisa) of Olivia, and Redell Buie (Albertine) of Cameron; daughters, Delois Redwine (James) and Carolyn Buie of Olivia, Barbara Melvins and Janet McIver (Donald) of Fayetteville, Angela Love of Sanford and Mary Graham (Johnnie) of Lemon Springs; sisters, Margaret Speed and Mattie Harrington of Cameron; brother-in-law, Lee Speed of Cameron; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at True Gospel United Church of God. Burial will follow at Murchison Chapel cemetery. Wake will be from 7 until 8 p.m. today at Knotts Funeral Home.
