SANFORD — Mr. Joseph Oren Dowdy, age 87, of the Asbury Community died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Chatham County, NC, on January 23, 1927, to the late Curtis Vann Dowdy and Ava Lee Williams Dowdy. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Wicker and Johnnie Jean Stout.

Daddy Joe, as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren, is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mabel Kathleen “Pinkie” Hall Dowdy; daughters, Cynthia Jo Wicker and husband Jerry, and Donna Lee Phillips and husband Landis, all of Asbury; four grandchildren, Wendy Wicker Phillips and husband Dwayne of Asbury, Jody Wicker and wife Wendi of Bennett, Jason Phillips and wife Tina of Liberty, Joshua Phillips and wife Cindy of Raleigh; and five great-grandchildren, Bryce Wicker Phillips, Sophie Kathleen Phillips, Ellie Claire Phillips, Reagan Leigh Phillips and Reed Harrison Wicker.

Joseph lived his entire life in his beloved Asbury community. He grew up working alongside his father and used that strong work ethic as he forged his own way. He was a pioneer in the wood preserving business and served as co-owner of General Creosoting Company in Gulf, NC and then later as owner and operator of General Timber Inc in Sanford, NC.

Along with his wood preserving businesses, he was also co-owner of Dowdy Ford in Sanford, NC.

He was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he served in many leadership roles. In 2006, his longtime membership to The Lions Club earned him The Jack Stickley Fellow Award presented for dedicated humanitarian services. Joseph enjoyed traveling with his family and friends and toured every state except Hawaii. He said he was waiting for them to build a bridge there before he’d go. He and Pinkie, with children and later grandchildren in tow, were away nearly every weekend on some sort of traveling adventure. Some favorites included trips to the lake, the beach, and annual trips to Florida. His hobbies included boating and water sports. Many years were spent enjoying the muddy water of Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston. He taught more people than his family can count how to water ski — jerking them up out of the water alongside him until they could find their own balance. In his retirement years, he enjoyed wintering with his wife and friends in Frostproof, Fla.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and at other times will be gathered at the home.

The funeral service will be Friday, February 21 at 3 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Burns officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated, or in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1836 Doctors Drive, Sanford, NC 27330 or Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery fund, 805 Asbury Church Road, Sanford, NC 27330.
