EDWARD CLIFFORD POPPA

CAMERON — Edward Clifford Poppa, 70, of Cameron, died Wednesday (4/23/2014) at his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Loyce Poppa, and a sister, Helen Golden. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp and was retired from the N.C. Department of Corrections.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway with Rev. Douglas Garner and Andrew Sharum officiating. Burial followed in the Shallow Well Church Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Coore Poppa of the home; daughter, Amanda Poppa Stevenson and husband Mark of Cameron; and four grandchildren.

 

PINKSTON EUGENE BYRD

LILLINGTON — Pinkston Eugene Byrd, 53, of Lillington died Thursday (4/24/14) at his home.

He was born in Harnett County, the son of Jack Byrd and Hazel Lee Byrd. He worked as a carpenter for Rock Lee Builders and Jackson Builders of Dunn for over 25 years. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Melvin Byrd.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Bunnlevel Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bill Goodnight officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home & Crematory in Lillington, and other times at the home of Hazel Byrd.

He is survived by his mother, Hazel Lee Byrd of the home; father, Jack Byrd of Dunn; daughter, Leslie Benoit of Gulfport, Miss.; sister, Ginger Chagnon and husband Wayne of Havre, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews.

SANFORD — Ruth C. Thomas, 95, of Sanford, died at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation on Saturday (4/26/14).

SOUTHERN PINES — Kathy Sloan, 57, of Southern Pines died Tuesday (4/22/14) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at First Missionary Baptist Church, Southern Pines. Public viewing will be Sunday (4/27/14) at Pugh & Smith Funeral Home, Carthage, from 1-6 p.m. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

CARTHAGE — Roy Collins, 73, of Carthage, died Wednesday (4/23/14) at his home.

SARAH FRANCES OVERTON PARTRIDGE

ABINGDON, VA. — Sarah Frances Overton Partridge, 90, a former resident of Sanford and widow of Alan L. Partridge, died Wednesday (4/23/14) following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Sanford, with Dr. Jeff Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Buffalo-Jonesboro Cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late James Atkins Overton and Susannah Brooks Overton.

She is survived by five children, Ann Brooks Johnson, Carol P. Brown, Alan L. Partridge, Laurie P. Morgan and Sarah Katherine Partridge; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

GILBERT FRANKLIN MOORE

BROADWAY — Funeral services for Gilbert Franklin Moore, 91, who died Wednesday (4/23/14), were conducted Friday at the O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Lillington. Burial followed in Harnett Memorial Park with military honors.

Soloist was Justin Harrington.

Pallbearers were Tony Cox, Bryan Newton, Jerry Ellis, Brent Marosytes, Randy Harrington and Van Buie.

 

NANCY SUE DAVIS MOON

SANFORD — Mrs. Nancy Sue Davis Moon, age 73, of Sanford, died Friday (4/25/14) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford

Mrs. Moon was born on March 28, 1941, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to the late Otto Davis and Jewell Wilson Davis Sargent. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Moon; a son, Thomas Howard Moon and by a sister, Virginia Hensler. Mrs. Moon was a devoted mother and grandmother. She did community service for friends and neighbors until she met her Savior Friday morning.

She is survived by two sons, Robert W. Moon, Jr. of Baltimore, Md. and John Patrick Moon and wife Toni of Sanford; two daughters, Laura Moon Jones and husband Mark of Sanford, and Kathleen Dale Moon Farsaci of Syracuse, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday (4/29/14) from 6-8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Laura and Mark Jones. The funeral will be held Wednesday (4/30/14) at 4 p.m. at Shallow Well United Church of Christ with Rev. Robert Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
