SANFORD — Ruth Anne Covert Thomas, age 95, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2014.

Ruth was born on October 29, 1918 in Siler City, NC to the late William Nicholson Covert and Kate Dowdy Covert. Ruth moved with her family to Sanford in 1924 where she attended elementary through high school and graduated in 1936. She attended Sanford Business College and graduated in 1938. When she finished school, she worked at Cross and Brinn from 1938 to 1984. After retirement, she continued working as W.J. Brinn's secretary and secretary treasurer of McIver Park Inc., retiring December 2004. Ruth was a Notary Public for 50 years. Ruth loved God and serving Saint Luke United Methodist Church in many capacities over the years. She was a member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church, Lucile Hunter Bible Class, where she served as the Secretary Treasurer since 1962, member and treasurer of Circle #9, United Methodist Women, served on the Administrative Board for several terms and on the Council of Ministries. Ruth was a multitalented woman: a devoted wife, aunt, community volunteer (Meals on Wheels), and avid bridge player. She and her late husband enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She will be deeply missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Thomas; sister, Margaret Covert Williamson, and niece, Judith Clyde Williamson.

Survivors include niece, Margaret Faye Williamson Wicker of Pittsboro, NC and nephew, Jade Womble Wicker, Jr. and his wife, Dawn, of Garner, NC and her beloved cat.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 10 - 11 a.m. Interment will be held immediately following the visitation at Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

A celebration of her life is scheduled at Saint Luke United Methodist Church at on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 12 noon.

ANGIER — Dianna Denise Honea Bowden, age 52, of Angier, NC, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at her home.

Mrs. Bowden was born Dec. 20, 1961, in Ft. Worth, TX, to the late Walter Dwane Honea and Naomi Suiter Honea.

She is survived by her stepmother, Fran Honea of Broadway; a son, Wendell Overcash and wife Stephanie of Sanford; brothers, Rodney Luellen of Broadway, Randy Luellen of Aberdeen and Tim Honea of South Carolina and one grandchild, Alexie Overcash.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 29, 2014, 2 to 3 p.m. (one hour prior to the service) at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, also at the Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel, with Chaplain Joel Cameron presiding.

CARTHAGE — Roy Collins, 73, of Carthage, died Friday (4/25/14) at his home.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eugene Ussery. Burial was at the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late William Thomas and Annie Jane Patterson Collins. He was a graduate of Sandhills Farmlife School and retired from the N.C. Department of Corrections where he worked as a officer at Cameron Morrison Correctional Institute and was directly involved with the Impact program. Prior to his work as a Corrections Officer, he worked several years in golf maintenance at the Country Club of Whispering Pines. He was preceded in death by sisters, Marguree Garner Bullitt, Betty Richardson and Mary Bullard; brothers, Prentice Patterson and Buck Collins; and a grandson, Kenny Henson.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Cox Collins; daughter, Kim Dunlap and husband Jackie of Robbins; sons, Jeffrey Collins and wife Sarah of Carthage, and Mark Collins and wife Cheli of Morganton, Ga.; stepchildren, Janet Caddell and husband Bryan of West End, and Beth Thomas and husband Mike of Pinebluff; brothers, Albert Collins and wife Ethel of Carthage, and Waylon Collins and wife Johnsie of West End; sister-in-law, Mae Patterson of Carthage; brother-in-law, Lester Bullard of Sanford; eight grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Kenny Henson Memorial Scholarship Fund, (established to support students from Kenny's college class of 2017 who would otherwise not be able to go to college) 773 Meadowview Drive, Morganton, Ga. 30560; or to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 632 McCrimmon Road, Carthage, N.C. 28327.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Donald G. Smith, 60, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Wednesday (4/23/14) at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsbury, Pa. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Watson Memorial - Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary.


FAYETTEVILLE — Rosie Pennie, 94, of 450 Slocumb Road, Fayetteville, died Thursday (4/24/14) at Haymount Nursing Home in Fayetteville.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. today at Mt. Hebrew A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will follow at Lafayette North in Fayetteville.

Arrangements are by Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary in Fayetteville.


CAMERON — A private graveside service for Edward Cameron, 99, of Cameron, who died Wednesday (4/23/14), was held Sunday with the Rev. David Coffey officiating.

William “Bill” Caudell was the bagpiper. Barra Ray read a poem.

SANFORD — Funeral service for MaryBeth Berry was held Monday at Miller-Boles Chapel with the Rev. Greg Long officiating.

Family remarks were given by her uncle. A special song was performed by Teresa Kelly.

A graveside service followed at Falcon Memorial Cemetery in Falcon.

Pallbearers were Chris Clark, Bryce Seymore, Edward Parker, Craig Parker, Will White and Ron Parker.
