RUTH HENDERSON BRYAN

BROADWAY — Mrs. Ruth Henderson Bryan, age 86, of Broadway, NC died Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Buncombe County, NC on February 24, 1928 to the late Thomas Samuel Henderson and Flora Mae Owenby Henderson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Jack Burris Bryan, Sr.; grandson Bryan Tyner and siblings Ray Henderson and Ruby Nell Lewis. Mrs. Bryan was a homemaker before graduating in the first Teacher's Assistant program in Lee County. She was a teacher's assistant at Broadway and Greenwood schools.

Mrs. Bryan was a member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church and at one time sang in the church choir. She and her late husband were members of a couples club that met once a month and the Sandhills Emmaus Community.

She is survived by son Jack Bryan, Jr. and wife Cindy of Deep River; daughters Elaine Tyner and husband Stewart, and Carol Bowling and husband Edward S., all of Broadway; brother Jack Henderson and wife Ruby of Asheville; sisters-in-law Shirley Henderson of Weaverville and Arbuna Wiggins of Arden, NC; grandchildren Heather and Steve Meisel, Raven and Mike Santucci, Patrick and Marybeth Bryan, Melinda and Phillip Durham, Justin Bowling, Jonathon and Constance Nowell, and Amanda Nowell; great-grandchildren Brittany Meisel, Christopher Meisel, Steven Ollermann, Rebecca Meisel, Jayden Marshall, Michael Santucci, Dylan Nowell, Reese Nowell, Jack Durham; and great-great-grandchild Emily Rose.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and the funeral will be Friday, May 2nd at 3:00 PM at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Sayles and Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. Burial will follow at Broadway Town Cemetery.

VICTOR L. GUSTAVSON JR.

SANFORD — Victor L. Gustavson, Jr., son of the late Victor and Eldora Gustavson, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014.

He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy for 3 years aboard the U.S.S. Saugus in the South Pacific.

He retired to Carolina Trace in Sanford after 37 years with Union Carbide Corp. having worked in Niagara Falls, NY, Columbia, TN, and Puerto Rico.

Vic spent many years working with the Boy Scouts (receiving the Long Rifle Award), and coaching Little League baseball teams. He has been an active member of CTCC serving on the board of his POA, and several years on Member-Guest Golf Tournaments. He has been involved in his church, serving as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, TN.

Vic is survived by his wife Joan of 66 years; son Bill (Susan); daughters, Sandy Merritt (Dennis) and Ellen Odom (Paul); grandchildren, David, John and Michael Gustavson, Adam Merritt, Katie Merritt Watters (William), Megan Odom Lenz (Jonathan), Ben Odom (Jeanie) and great-grandson Brayden Gustavson; sisters-in-law, Jane D. House (Bob) and Jean D. Bowen, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at The First Presbyterian Church in Sanford on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to Carolina Trace Commemorative Fund, The American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, loved by many and will be missed by all.

SILER CITY — An angel has received her wings. Sheri Phillips Holcomb has left us to be with the Lord. Sheri was a loving and dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma and aunt. She had a degree in Early Child Development and she was trained as a CNA. Sheri spent the majority of her life on earth as a caregiver to all.

She is survived by her husband Chris Holcomb, son Cliff Holcomb and daughter-in-law Brady Holcomb, daughter Sara Holcomb, son Cameron Holcomb and fiancé Kayla Garner; her parents Bruce and Iola Gaines Phillips, her sister Kelly Phillips Spivey and brother-in-law Harold Spivey, her brother Tyra Phillips and sister-in-law Jennifer Diven Phillips; granddaughters Amber and Alyssa Holcomb; nieces Jacqui May, Candace Phillips King, Hillary Phillips, Madison Phillips and Rachel Jackson; nephews Kevin Jackson, Chris May and Anthony King; great nieces Mykiah Walters, Hannah Walters and Ava King; great nephews Elijah Walters, Josh Walters and Nicholas May; Jennett and George Beal, her mother and father-in-law, and brother-in-law Derek Holcomb, and her beloved four legged companions, Max and Hershey Holcomb.

Services will be held at Antioch Baptist Church in Goldston on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at the church.

PEGGY MATHERLY BENNETT

SUFFOLK, Va. — Peggy Matherly Bennett of Suffolk, Va., formerly of Sanford, died Tuesday (4/29/14).

Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Shallow Well Cemetery. The family will greet friends beginning at 1 p.m. in the Parlor at Shallow Well United Church of Christ.

She was born in Greensboro, daughter of the late Jabe and Martha Matherly. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Garland Bennett, and grandson, Michael Pessar.

She is survived by four daughters, Cindy Powell of Cary, Lynn Whitley and husband Larry of Selma, Robin Pessar and husband Marc of Virginia Beach, Va., and Susan Weaver and husband Keith of Suffolk, Va.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

SANFORD — Herbert James West Jr., 78, of 522 Brinn Drive, Sanford, died Friday (4/25/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was the son of Herbert James and Grace Pearson West.
