SOUTERN PINES — Robert "Bobby" McDonald Baker, age 81, of Southern Pines, died on Thursday (5/1/14) at Manor Care of Pinehurst.

He was born on April 20, 1933, in Mecklenburg County to the late William Everette Baker and Mary Elizabeth Fuquay Baker. Bobby owned and operated convenience stores throughout the Sandhills area.

He was a former member of the Highland Barbershop Chorus of Fayetteville and the Golf Capitol Chorus of Pinehurst. Bobby played the bass horn for many years in the Sudan Temple Band and was a past president of the Moore County Shrine Club. He volunteered for many years for FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital and area prisons. Bobby had a heart for helping others and a contagious love for people and life. He was a man of strong faith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janine Miller Baker of Southern Pines; his daughter, Linda Lee Baker and husband Peter Wood of Raleigh; his son, Bob M. Baker Jr. and wife Dawn of Fayetteville; his son, Bill Baker and wife Debra of Cary; his step-son, Richard Goldener and wife Kim of Lakeland, Fla.; and his step-daughter Shari Duncan of Newark, Del.; 5 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (5/6/14) at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines with Rev. Archie Stevens officiating. The interment will follow at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

SANFORD — Jean Kirkman Chester, 86, of Sanford passed away Saturday (5/3/14). Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Buffalo Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

Mrs. Chester was a daughter of the late Cecil and Helon Kirkman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Chester; sister, Marjorie K. McCullough; and her brother, J. T. Kirkman.

Jean was a devoted wife, mother, mother in law, grandmother, sister, and friend. She retired from Captain Rod Sullivan Inc., and was a member of the Shrinettes and several local bridge clubs.

Mrs. Chester is survived by her sister, Ann Kirkman Dowdy (husband Jeter) of Sanford; children, Karen Chester of Raleigh, Holly Baker of Sanford, Chet Chester (wife Wanda) of Sanford, and Dee Anne Chester of Sanford; and grandchildren, Kirk Baker and wife Lynn of Orlando, Fla., Drew Cox of Wilmington, Preston Cox of Sanford, Danielle Chester of Sanford, and Brittany Chester of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends Sunday (5/4/14) from 5-7 p.m. at 518 N. Franklin Dr., Sanford.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Donald G. Smith, 60, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Wednesday (4/23/14) at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Sheryl Battle Smith; children, Labeka, Adeka, Westly, Chyna, Tatyana, Wayne, Lamar and Derek; many in-laws and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Monday (5/5/14) at Prevaling Life Ministries, 207 McIver St., Sanford, with Rev. Herman Morris officiating. Interment will follow in McQueen Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Sanford.

BROADWAY — Funeral service for Ruth Henderson Bryan, 86, of Broadway, who died Wednesday (4/30/14) at Central Carolina Hospital, was conducted Friday (5/2/14) at 3 p.m. at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Sayles and Dr. W. Gary McCollough presiding. Burial followed at Broadway Town Cemetery.

Kimberly Davidson played the piano and Rev. Ronnie Byrd was soloist. The Jonesboro Sanctuary Choir sang as well as the congregation. A recording by her late husband Jack Burris Bryan was played.

Pallbearers were Jonathon Nowell, Patrick Bryan, Mike Santucci, Justin Bowling, Phillip Durham and Steve Meisel.

LAKEVIEW — Thomas Grier Deese, 84, of Lakeview died Friday (5/2/14) at his home.

He was born in Carthage on May 16, 1929, to Paul and Dovie Bowers Deese. He was a member of Lakeview Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Radie Catherine Deese; two children, Sandra Deese Kimrey (Clyde) of Wallace S.C., and Thomas "Tommy" P. Deese (Jenny) of Southern Pines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Dovie Bowers Deese; a daughter, Donna Lynn Deese; and two brothers, Garland Deese and Alexander "Zack" Deese.

The family request no flowers or food, but memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374 or to Lakeview Presbyterian Church, PO Box 32, Lakeview NC 28350.

CLINTON — Dorothy Hall Lane, 77, of 1959 Beulah Road, Clinton, died Wednesday (4/30/14) at Kitty Askins Hospice Care in Goldsboro.

A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday (5/4/14) at Clinton Community Church with Pastor Dwight Dunning officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.

She was born in Union Springs, Ala., on June 29, 1936, to Gilbert and Erah Lou Hall. She worked 38 years with Lundy Packing Company in Clinton and was a member of Clinton Community Church.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Anita Honeycutt Lane of Clinton; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Lizzie L. Welch of Georgia, Ruby F. Kilpatrick of Alabama, and Cheryl W. Norrell of Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Charles Lane; parents, Gilbert and Erah Lou Hall; sisters, Annie Pearl Faircloth, Betty Lou Woodall and Shelby Jean Sykes; and brothers, Gilbert R. Hall Jr., Billy Simon Hall and William Henry Hall.

WHISPERING PINES — Astrid Lillian Laamann, 86, of Whispering Pines died Friday (4/25/14) at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Chicago Estonian House.

She was born in Tartu, Estonia, on Oct. 24, 1927, to Mart and Emilie Jogeva Laidroo. She spent her working career as an artist and was a member of Village Chapel in Pinehurst.

She is survived by her sons, Sven Eric Laamann of Whispering Pines and Paul Andress of Colorado Springs; one brother, Henn Laidroo of Indiana; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mart and Emilie Jogeva Laidroo.
