ANNIE LEE HOPKINS MATTHEWS
SANFORD — Annie Lee Hopkins Matthews, 83, of Sanford, died Friday (5/9/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.
She was born on June 22, 1930, in Cameron to the late Pate and Cora Godfrey Hopkins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, William Gaither Matthews; one brother, Dillard Hopkins; and one sister, Vallie Marsh.
She is survived by two children, Frankie Matthews and his wife Bonnie, and Jackie Matthews Bass and her husband Jeff; four grandchildren, Dennis Matthews and his wife Diana, Jonathan Matthews and his wife Brandi, and Justin and Jordan Serrano; three great grandchildren, Daniel and McKenzie Matthews and Kendal Serrano; and two step-grandchildren, Laura Harrell and Adam Bass.
A visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at Pocket Presbyterian Church. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the church with interment in the church cemetery.

CAMERON — Funeral service for Arthur William Bates, 70, who died Monday (5/5/14), was held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Works For Christ Christian Center with Dr. Alice Hooker officiating. Burial was at Rock Springs Cemetery in Lillington.
The church choir sang.
Pallbearers were friends of the family.

SANFORD — A private graveside service for Brenda Lee Ingram was held Friday. Following the graveside service, a Celebration of Life Service was held at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ronald Stoker and Betty Sherrod, CRE officiating.
Organist was David Almond and soloist was Wendell McGee.

ABERDEEN — Jesse Nelson, 94, died Thursday (5/8/14).
Born April 13, 1920, he was the son of the late Annie Nelson. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. In February of 1943, he was one of the first soldiers sent to Camp Mackall.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Archie Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at 11 a.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Maude Nelson; six children, Fred of Huntington Beach, Calif., Carol McDonald (Regie) of Cary, Linda Eubanks of West End, Cindy Munn (Greg) of Aberdeen, Charles and Tim of Rockingham, and Darren (Michelle) of Aberdeen; one nephew; two nieces; 25 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
