BILLY JOE LEAKE

Billy Joe Leake died Thursday (1/10/13) at his home in Pittsboro.
He was born April 24, 1948, son of the late Weldon and Julia Leake.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Tara, sisters Facious Leake and Clara Leake Brooks.

He is survived by  one son, Daryl Eugene Leake (Sherrill); three grandchildren; four brothers, Leo (Pam), Ernest, Eugene (Della) and Larry (Brenda); one sister, Caroldine (Joseph); one aunt; and a host of other relatives and friends.

During his early years, he was an active member of Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Chapel Hill.  He was a graduate of Horton High School, and a graduate of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.  He served in the U.S. Air Force.

JOSEPH P. 'JOE' COLEMAN

BROADWAY — Joseph P. ‘Joe’ Coleman, 60, of Broadway, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, after a courageous battle from a brief illness.

Joe was born on May 29, 1952, in Columbus County, N.C. He was employed as a Maintenance Engineer for UNC Co-Generation Facilities. Joe was one of the best pipe fitters and welders around the Lee County area. Joe also served his country in the U.S. Army.

Joe was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Kayla, who was the apple of his eye. He loved woodworking and built many beautiful pieces for his family. He loved working on his land with his trusty dog, “Mojo”. His latest project was building a cannon with his son, Shane. He leaves us with many cherished memories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lettie and Odell Coleman; brothers, Ross Coleman and James Coleman and a nephew, Glynn Coleman.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Deborah; his son, Shane Coleman and Joy; a granddaughter, Kayla Coleman; step grandchildren, Brianna and Ivie all of Sanford; sisters, Clara Mae Simmons and Shirley Long; and a brother, Richard Coleman all of Whiteville, N.C.; mother-in-law, Shirley Murphy, brother and sister-in-laws, Leo & Jan Smith and Tammi Lynch and Ann Coleman all of Sanford; nieces, Wanda, Alisha, Angie, Sheila, Lisa, Kelly, Adrian, McCail, and Skylar and by nephews, Randy, Josh, Neill, Jonathan, Derek, Benjy, Jeremy, and Josh.

The family will receive loved ones and friends at the family home at 280 Roanoke Lane.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

GARY CLAUDE STEPHENS

SANFORD — Gary Claude Stephens, 64, of Sanford, died Thursday (1/10/2013) at Central Carolina in Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in New Berlin, NY, and the son of the late Claude Stephens and Jennie Vernett Simmons Stephens. He was a graduate of Laurens Central High School in Laurens, NY, and served in the United State marine Corps.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Royce Baker officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon E. Stephens of the home; daughters Connie Stephens Brown and husband Gary of Sanford and Lori Lee Stephens of the home; sisters Avis Waite of Edmeston, NY, and Sharon A. Wikoff of Anchorage, Alaska; brother Robert Stephens and wife Joyce of Edmeston, NY and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 7 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials are made to the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 370 Broadway, NC 2705 for funeral expenses.

SANFORD — Funeral services for Angela Lambert Martin McLeod, 56, of 2570 Cotten Road, Sanford, who died Wednesday (1/9/2013), was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Calvary Baptist Church.

The Rev. Thomas Smith, Sr. officiated and interment followed at the Lee Memory Gardens in Sanford. Soloists included Evangelist Angela Washington and pallbearers were the trustees of the First Calvary Baptist Church.

CARTHAGE — Funeral service for Robert Wayne Reynolds, 52, of Carthage, who died Tuesday (1/8/2013), was held on at 3 p.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

With the Rev. Eugene Ussery and Rev. David Reynolds officiating.

Special music was provided by Lucille Collins and Waylon Cook.

  JOHN JEFFERSON MCLEOD

SANFORD — John Jefferson McLeod, 73 of Sanford died Monday (1/7/2013) at the E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at Rogers Pickard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Curtis Norris officiating. Burial will follow at a later time.

McLeod was born in Lee County, a son of the late William Ernest McLeod and Minnie Frances Moore McLeod.

McLeod is survived by his wife, Daisy Wilson McLeod; a sister, Ann Haitt; brothers, Frank McLeod and Preston McLeod.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 pm Sunday prior to the funeral.

  WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN MCGUGAN JR

SANFORD —  Funeral services for William Jennings Bryan McGugan, who died Wednesday 1/9/2013) was held Saturday at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with Rev’s. Gilbert McDowell and George Akers officiating.

Two Special songs were performed by Rev. Ronald Byrd.

Pallbearers were Dennie Laws, Dustin Holder, William Holder, Adam Miller, David Miller and John Pace.

A Graveside Service followed at Buffalo Cemetery

SANFORD — Perry White, 91, of Sanford, died Friday (1/11/2013) at Central Carolina Hospital

Memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke United methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Cobb officiating.

White was a native of Cornelius and born on Oct. 26, 1921, to the late Perry W. and Myrtle Alexander White and graduate of Mars Hill College. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Hallman White. He was a veteran with the US Army Air Corp during WWII.

White is survived by his son Dr. Carter Hallman White of Norfolk, Va.; daughter Pamela White Patterson and husband Edwin of Sanford; sister Margaret White Harrison of Biloxi, Miss; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 - 6 p.m. on Sunday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

VASS — Donald “Duke” Snider, 73, of Vass, died Thursday (1/10/2013) at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Funeral service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday at North Hampton Community Church, North Hampton, Ohio, with the Rev. Jim Welch officiating.

Snider was born in Springfield, Ohio on Sept. 26, 1939 to the late Glendon and Fern Brahm Snider.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Watkinson Snider; two sons, Chris Groeber and wife Jeanette of Kentucky, Eric Snider and wife Megan of Tennessee; one sister, Joyce Wilson and husband Tom of Indiana; one brother Lowell Snider and wife Suzie of Ohio; two grandchildren; three nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glendon and Fern Brahm Snider and one brother, Wilmer Snider.

SANFORD — Funeral services for Johnny Bennett Sr., 64, who died Dec. 30, 2012, was held at 4 p.m. Thursday at J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home in Jamaica, NY.

He was survived by wife Affie; two sons: Johnny,Jr. and wife Latisha and Travis; mother Annie W.
