DAVID SCOTT THORNTON

SANFORD - Funeral service for David Scott Thornton, age 45, of Sanford, N.C., who died Tuesday, August 26, 2014, was held Friday, August 29, 2014, at 2 PM at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Parker, Rev. Justin Bouldin, and Rev. Donald Southern officiating. Eulogies were given by Captain Tony Hancox and Rev. Ken Dowdy. Burial followed at Buffalo Cemetery with police honors and Lloyd Johnson Bagpiper.

Congressional and New Hope Baptist Church Worship Team celebrated in songs.

Pallbearers were members of the Sanford Police Department Detective Division. Honorary pallbearers were other members of Law Enforcement and Fire Department.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

 

BERTHA J. GRIDER

SCOTTSBURG, IND — Bertha J. Grider, 88, of Scottsburg, Ind., died Tuesday (8/26/14) at Hampton Oaks Health Campus in Scottsburg, Ind.

She was born on April 10, 1926 in Broadway, the daughter of the late Jake and Annie (Gilbert) Holder.

She was a retired teacher and a member of the Willey’s Chapel United Methodist Church near Borden, Ind. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry McCaskill; a brother, Allan Holder; and four sisters, Eula Phillips, Lois Laughinhouse, Mary Brooks and Onita Walker.

She is survived by her husband, Claude W. Grider; two sons, Tony Grider of Sellersburg, Ind. and Steve Grider of Auburn, Calif; five daughters, Janice Tilman of Jacksonville, Fla., Linda Jewitt of Cooperstown, N.D., Christine Smith of Austin, Ind., Carol Wilson of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Rebecca Hall of Scottsburg, Ind.; a sister, Genevieve Hughes of Sanford; 31 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Ind. with burial at the Forest Grove Cemetery near Borden, Ind.

Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Home.

 

ELIZABETH JOHNSON

SANFORD - Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, 90, of 211 Register St, Sanford, NC, passed Friday, August 29, 2014 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her husband Prince Johnson, a son Clarence Johnson, two daughters Pearl Davis, and Vera Quick.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children Betty J. Degraffenreidt, Annie Burch (Milton), Joyce Jackson, Deborah Bruton (Wilbert), Johnny Johnson (Barbara), Gordon Johnson, and Jeffery Johnson (Ellen), one brother James Baldwin (Vandalia), a son-in-law James Quick, a special nephew Steven Wood, 25 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 52 great great grandchildren, 3 great, great , great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Works For Christ Christian Center, Sanford, NC. Burial will follow at Tempting Congregational Church Cemetery, Sanford, NC.

JOHN KENNETH ROBERTSON JR.

SOUTHERN PINES - John Kenneth Robertson Jr., 62, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

A graveside service will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Bethesda Cemetery, Aberdeen. Family will receive friends Monday, September 1, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Boles Funeral Home, Southern Pines and at other times at 1470 Central Drive, Southern Pines.

John was born October 10, 1951 in Lumberton, NC to Margaret McNeill and John K. Robertson Sr. He graduated from Rowland High School and Pembroke State University. He was a math instructor for many years and managed Mac’s No. 7 for the past 14 years. John lived in Sanford for many years but considered Aberdeen his real home.

He is survived by his wife Karen Rock Robertson of Sanford; children Amy Elizabeth Robertson of Broadway, Mary Ellen Robertson of Bear Creek, and William Michael Robertson of Sanford; five grandchildren; sister Robbie Robertson Williams of Sanford. John was predeceased by his parents and a sister Jeanne Robertson.

MARY MARGARET LANIER MCKNIGHT

BUIES CREEK – Mary Margaret Lanier McKnight, 93, daughter of the late Thomas Theron Lanier and Pearl Smith Lanier, passed away on August 28, 2014. She was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Lanier, a brother, Tom Lanier, and her husband, L.E. McKnight.

Mary Margaret was born in Benson, NC on July 14, 1921 and spent part of her childhood in Jonesboro before moving to Buies Creek in 1934. After graduating from Meredith College in 1942, she worked as a clerk in the naval shipyard in Wilmington for the duration of World War II.  Following the war, she completed her training as an occupational therapist at the University of Pennsylvania and returned to Buies Creek to work for the Harnett County Department of Social Services. Later she worked as an occupational therapist for UNC Hospitals until her retirement.

In 1950, Mary Margaret married L.E. McKnight, and they made their home in Coats, NC, where Mac opened a drug store. They later returned to Buies Creek but remained active in both the Coats and Buies Creek communities. Mary Margaret was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church where she served on the floral and bereavement committees well into her golden years. She was a charter member of the Buies Creek Garden Club and was active in various book clubs and bridge clubs throughout her adult life.

She is survived by two sons, Douglas McKnight of Buies Creek and David McKnight and wife Jan of Angier; one daughter, Sarah McKnight Boone and husband Holt of Cary; four grandchildren; one brother, Coyte Lanier and wife Gladys of Garner.

Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 1, 4:00-6:00 PM at the J.A. Campbell House, Highway 421, Buies Creek, NC.   Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm  Tuesday, Sept. 2,  at Memorial Baptist Church, 271 Leslie Campbell Avenue, Buies Creek.  Burial will be in the Buies Creek Cemetery. 

Throughout their marriage, Mary Margaret and Mac helped many young people attend college. DARREN MILTON GODFREY

SANFORD – Darren Milton Godfrey, age 31, of Sanford died Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Mr. Godfrey was born in Lee County to Sandra Carol Coley Godfrey and the late Willie Lee Godfrey. He was employed by Floretta Imports. Mr. Godfrey was preceded in death by his brother Christopher Lee Godfrey.

Surviving relatives include his mother, Sandra Coley Godfrey of the home; a brother Brian Godfrey and wife Karen of Sanford; five nieces and one nephew.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, 3:30PM at New Life Fellowship Cemetery with Rev. John David Stinnett presiding.

No visitation will be held at the funeral home.

SANFORD – A funeral service was held for Elizabeth Kay Inman at Flat Spring Baptist Church in Sanford with Rev. Dr. Gary McCollough and Rev. Gary Moore officiating. Special Music “Over the Rainbow” was played during the service. Graveside Service followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Chuncey Ayres, John Phillips, Jonathan Rosser, Stuart Ruth, Rodney Brewer and Roland Brewer.

WENDY JEAN JOHNSON

SANFORD – A funeral service was held for Wendy Jean Johnson on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 12 noon at New Hope Baptist Church in Sanford. Officiating was Rev. Dr. Brian Parker.

Pallbearers were Keith Jackson, Brian Miller, Mike Torkelson and Bobby Johnson.

RONALD WILLIAM BIDDLE

ABERDEEN – Mr. Ronald William Biddle, 73, of Aberdeen, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Ron was born in Melmore, Ohio on August 5, 1941 to James F. and Gladys Duffie Biddle. He spent his working career at Central Carolina Chevrolet in Sanford as an auto mechanic. He will be greatly missed by his family.

He is survived by his children, Tari Valero of Texas, Kenneth Biddle of California, Bethany Biddle of Charlotte, Jason Biddle of Aberdeen; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. and Gladys Duffie Biddle; sister, Cora Rouse; brother, Cloyd Biddle.

JAMES ROBERT HOLDER

SANFORD - Mr. James Robert Holder, age 77, of Sanford, NC, died Friday, August 29, 2014 at UNC Hospitals.

He was born in Lee County, NC on August 9, 1937 to the late C. Robert Holder and Sudie Fore Holder. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother William Holder. Mr. Holder was a maintenance technician for Robert Company for 34 years and presently was a driver for COLT.

He is survived by his wife Mae Strickland Holder; son Bob Holder of Sanford; two daughters Wanda Holder of Lillington, Pamela Boyer and husband James of Sanford; sister Frances Cameron of Sanford; four grandchildren Katie Whitson and husband Jeff of Fuquay-Varina, Shannon Layne and husband Tim of Sanford, Amber Malone of Lillington, Kenny Holder of Johnsonville; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 31, 20014 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and a graveside service will be held Monday, September 1st at 1:00 PM at Lee Memory Gardens with Pastor Paul Backlund officiating.

EUGENE "GENE" PICKARD SR.

GREENSBORO - Mr. Eugene “Gene” Pickard, Sr., 89, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 29, 2014 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, September 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church with Reverend Patrick Fuller, Reverend Dan Dockery, and Reverend Phillip Cole taking part in the service. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

“Gene” was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during WWII. He had retired from Exxon as a petroleum transporter, and was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Mr. Pickard is survived by his wife, Pauline Bobbitt Pickard; daughter, Donna Marie Dockery (Dan), of Carrollton, Ga.; son, Del Pickard, Jr. (Debra), of Greensboro; three grandsons, Jonathan Dockery, David Dockery, and Christopher Pickard; and sister, Carolyn Rosser (Herbert), of Raleigh.

The family will receive friends on Monday, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church.

BARBARA GUNTER HALL

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Barbara Gunter Hall, 49, went home to be with Christ on August 30, 2014 in Greenville, SC. She lost her courageous battle with brain cancer.

Barbara was born in Sanford, NC in 1965 to Luke and Betty Jo Gunter. Her friends and family remember her as someone who was always cheerful, kind, and sweet and a friend to all. She always had a song in her heart and a smile on her face. She was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, NC and Middle Tennessee State. After a career as a buyer for Belk, she devoted her time to her family as she encouraged her sons in their education and sports by acting as a volunteer and team mom. She was a loving mother and wife who always put her family first.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Joseph and Pearl Cameron, her paternal grandparents, Luke and Mattie Belle Gunter Sr. and her infant son Joseph Sterling Hall.

She is survived by her husband David Lincoln Hall, sons Grant and Jacob Hall, her parents Luke and Betty Jo Gunter, her brothers Barry Gunter and wife Kim, Kent Gunter and wife Miriam, a sister Hollis Andersen and husband Jeff, and loving nieces and nephews.

Barbara will be missed and our hearts will grieve until we reunite with her in heaven.

The family will receive friends at Mackey Mortuary on Monday evening September 1st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Tuesday afternoon September 2nd at 3:00pm.
