CHAPEL HILL — Galen Thomas Starnes, 29, of 1925 Jo Mac Road, Chapel Hill, died Tuesday (8/26/14) at his residence. No service is scheduled. Announcement by Knotts Funeral Home.

PITTSBORO — Christine Marchuk Nevius, 48, of Pittsboro, died Saturday (8/30/14). Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of N.C. in Raleigh.

SANFORD — Conrad Clark, 86, of 204 Simmons St., Sanford, died Wednesday (8/27/14) at Liberty Commons.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; daughters, JoAnn Smith and Paulette Clark, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Frances Clark of Baltimore, Md.; one grandchild; one great-grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

Wake will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Knotts Funeral Home.

MARIA ATKINS

OXFORD, Miss. — Maria Atkins, 92, of Oxford, Miss., formerly of Cantonment, Fla., and Sanford, N.C., died Friday (8/29/14) at Hermitage Gardens of Oxford in Oxford, Miss.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1921 in Germany to the late Josef and Maria (Offinger) Stoller. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Burton Atkins.

She is survived by one daughter, Evi Womble; two sons, Joseph Atkins and John Atkins; and five grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 12 noon. Burial will follow at White Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

KEITH STEPHEN VALENTI

VASS — Keith Stephen Valenti, 42, of Vass, died Saturday (8/30/14).

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. today at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Allen Mashburn officiating. Burial will follow at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Cemetery.

He was born in New York on Sept. 9, 1971, to Steve and Suzanne Bryan Valenti. He was employed with the town of Southern Pines. He was preceded in death by his mother, Suzanne Bryan Valenti.

He is survived by his father, Steve Valenti; brother, Adam Valenti and wife Lucy; one niece; one nephew; and a host of friends.

FAYETTEVILLE — Daniel Rutledge Sr., 76, of Sprucewood Drive, Fayetteville, died Friday (8/29/14) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

He is survived by his wife, Vui Rutledge; daughters, Linda Rutledge, Mary Hill and Judy Kyre; son, Daniel Rutledge; and four grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. today at Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary in Fayetteville, Funeral service will be held at 12 noon at the funeral home chapel following visitation.

FAYETTEVILLE — Joy Patrice Tyson, 52, of Glenwick Drive, Fayetteville, died Friday (8/22/14) in Halifax County.

She is survived by her mother, Lois D. Casey; and brothers, Nathaniel Tyson, Travis Tyson and Raphael Tyson.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary. Burial will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary.

CARTHAGE — Lowell (Buck) Smith, 76, of Carthage, died Monday (9/1/14) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Pugh & Smith Funeral Home of Carthage.

BOBBIE JEAN UPCHURCH

BROADWAY — Bobbie Jean Upchurch, 78, of Broadway, died Monday (9/1/14) at her home.

She was born Aug. 9, 1935 to the late William Bryant and Lettye Rene Baker O’Quinn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Roy Franklin Upchurch. She was a member of Spring Hill United Methodist Church. She served as the church treasurer, Sunday School teacher and choir member. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and worked for the State of North Carolina for over 30 years. The majority of that time she was a bookkeeper for Harnett County schools. She served on the Boone Trail Emergency Services Board of Directors as treasurer.

She is survived by two daughters, Renee Godwin and husband Lindsey of Broadway, and Jeana Morrison and husband Randy of Lillington; two sisters, Dorothy Morrison of Lillington and Carolyn Rice of Broadway; a brother, Bill O’Quinn and wife Magdaline of Broadway; and  four grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Spring Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home and Crematory in Lillington.
