DURHAM — Doris H. Watson, 76, of Durham, formerly of Sanford, died Wednesday (7/9/14) at Durham Regional Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Watson Memorial-Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary.


CAMERON — Johnnie Mae Spell, 56, of 106 Chatman Lane, Cameron, died Wednesday (7/9/14) at First Health Hospice in Pinehurst.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Spell; her parents, Catherine and Louis Chatman Sr.; children, Jamie Spell and Kathy McDougle; four grandchildren; and her siblings, Louis Chatman Jr., Samuel Lee Chatman, Betty Sue Barnes and Margie Roberson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John B. Chatman.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ Jesus in Cameron.

Arrangements are by Knotts Funeral Home.


HAMPSTEAD — Robert Reed Swope, 93, of Hampstead, died Wednesday (7/9/14).

Born July 2, 1921 in Newport, Ky., he was a W.W. II veteran and had a long career as an electrical engineer with General Electric and Westinghouse. He was a member of Blake’s Chapel Advent Christian Church in Hampstead. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Alvera Marie Swope, and his eldest daughter, Sharon Ann Bies.

He is survived by his companion, Bertie Lookabaugh; daughters, Linda Siegert and Jackie Fugich; sons, Gregory Swope and Christopher Swope; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home in Lillington.

SILER CITY — Annie Ruth Burnette, 88, of 64 Harry Burnette Road, Siler City, died Tuesday (7/8/14).

She was a member of Lambert Chapel Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lambert Chapel Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She is survived by three sisters, Betty Marie Paschal, Rosa Mae Marsh and Margaret Moffitt, all of Siler City; and a host of nieces and nephews.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Carlton William McNeill, 68, of Sanford, was held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gregg A. Presnal and the Rev. Ray Brooks officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Rhonda McNeill. Soloist was Georgia Lee Patterson. The congregation also sang two selections.

Pallbearers were Scott Brown, Harold McNeill, Andrew Sullivan, Mark Thomas, Tracy Thomas and J.W. Thompson.

The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the services.

PINEHURST — Irene (Lippman) Rothbeind died Friday (7/4/14) in Pinehurst.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Rothbeind.

She is survived by her sons, Samuel and Matthew (Barbara); and four grandchildren.

SEVEN LAKES — Emmett J. Crahan died Tuesday (7/8/14) at Pinehurst Rehabilitation Center in Pinehurst.

Funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst. Burial was a Seven Lakes Cemetery.

CARTHAGE — Lloyd McGraw Jr., 81, of Carthage died Wednesday (7/9/14) at Peak Resources - Pinelake in Carthage.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Unity Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Warren and Edwin Moore officiating.

A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late James Lloyd and Harriet Watson McGraw. He was a graduate of Carthage High School and N.C. State University. He received a degree in civil engineering and first worked in Newport News shipyards where he helped design ships. He was the Carthage Man of the Year in 1961. He served on the Carthage town board for eight years, was a retired Carthage firefighter and a lifetime member of the Jaycees. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Harriett McGraw Loy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Hall McGraw; children, James Lloyd McGraw III of Cornelius, Lee McGraw of Carthage, Kay Thompson of Goldsboro, Guy McGraw of Aberdeen and Nathan McGraw of Alexandria, Va.; stepchildren, Todd Peed of Hamlet, Steve Peed of Carthage, Sara Mahon of Carthage and Angie Burgess of Sanford; and five grandchildren.

SILER CITY — Gina Culberson Warner, 46, of Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City died Tuesday (7/8/14) at her residence.

She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Jan. 27, 1968, the daughter of Ed and Linda (Davis) Culberson. She was a 1986 graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School, had been employed by Collins & Aikman and Honda.

She is survived by her husband of eight years, Bobby Warner; her parents, Ed and Linda Davis Culberson; sister, Pam Culberson; brother, Barry Culberson and wife Charlie, all of Siler City; and stepsons, Dusty Warner of Sanford and Kalen Warner of Siler City.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home and other times at the home of her parents, 2446 Silk Hope-Liberty Road, Siler City.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Clyde “Butch” Morgan Jr., 76, of Sanford, was held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Andy Foley and the Rev. Paul Backlund officiating. Burial followed at the Buffalo Cemetery.

Pianist was Dr. Daniel Hester. Soloist was Joe Keith.

Pallbearers were Jerry Flinchum, Clayton Burns, Mike Bullis, Jimmy Bullis, Walt Wood, Adam Perkins and David Perkins. Honorary pallbearers were Zachary Burns, Matthew Hales, Logan Thomas and Nolan Wood.
