JAMES THOMAS STONE

SANFORD — James Thomas Stone, age 86, of Sanford died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Central Carolina Hospital.

Mr. Stone was born in Chatham County on June 13, 1927, to the late James Edgar Stone and Gertie Melton Stone. He was preceded in death by brothers, Caley Ray Stone and Guy Stone; sisters, Cornelia Gonella and Faye Eads. He was a member of Grace Chapel Church and retired from Beach Ford Car Dealership. He formerly worked for Womble Chevrolet. Mr. Stone served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 64 years, Jewell Coggin Stone of the home; a son, James Thomas Stone Jr. and wife Karen of Sanford; a daughter, Joy Stone Barnes of Sanford; grandchildren, Austin, Krestin and Pierce Barnes, Jan Stone and Bentley.

The funeral will be held at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. Rudy Holland and the Rev. Royce Baker presiding. The family will receive friends at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home one hour prior to the service (2 to 3 p.m.). Burial will follow at Grace Chapel Church Cemetery.

MAX GRAY HOLT

SANFORD — Max Gray Holt, 86, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., formerly of Sanford, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 1, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Holt was born and raised in the Olivia area and a son of the late Lewis Gray Holt and Maggie Docia Graham Holt. He was preceded in death by two infant children, Perry Lynn Holt and Belinda Marie Holt. He served the U.S. Navy during W.W. II on PT Boats in the Philippines. He met his wife Marion on a blind date and they proudly celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 25th of this year.

Max always had a humble heart and loved his family. Throughout his life he was a model of integrity. He worked for Southern Bell telephone in Winston-Salem for 38 years. While in Winston-Salem, he served his church as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and sound technician at the churches he attended. Max was faithful and loving to his family and to his Lord and Savior.

Mr. Holt is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion Campbell Holt; two daughters, Phyllis Taylor and husband Monty of Indian Trail and Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Shelia Derham and husband Jimmy of Christiansburg, VA; four grandchildren, Ashley Taylor, Graham Taylor, Winston Derham, and Justin Derham; two sisters, Ruby Godwin and Mary Dickens of Sanford; one brother, Gary Holt of Sanford.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Parlor at First Baptist Church.

EMILY CHEEK CARTER

SILER CITY — Emily Cheek Carter, age 82, died Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Coventry House of Siler City.

Emily was born June 8, 1931, to William and Ethel Carter and grew up in Siler City. She graduated from Women's College (UNCG) and taught school for many years in North Carolina and Virginia. Upon retirement, Emily returned to Siler City where she enjoyed gardening, playing Bridge, watching Duke basketball and traveling. She attended Piney Grove Church and First Baptist Church. Emily enjoyed her family and friends. She was preceded in death by parents and a brother, William "Bill" Oliver Carter, Jr.

She is survived by sister, Louise C. Ivey; nieces, Dee Lunney and husband Ed, and Kathy Newton and husband Mike; nephews, David Carter and Chris Carter; and great-nephews, Michael Newton and Noah Carter.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 in the Oakwood Cemetery, N. Chatham Ave, Siler City with the Rev. Jim Folks officiating.

Memorials may be made to Chatham County Animal Rescue.

SANFORD — Jessa Norris, 85, died Sunday (9/1/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 15, 1928 in Moore County to the late Thomas and Helen Johnson. She was a member of First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William B. Norris Sr., and nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son, William B. Norris Jr. and his wife Sandra; one daughter, Helen Harrington; sister, Helen Cheatham; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home. A graveside service will immediately follow visitation at Buffalo Cemetery.

SANFORD — Graveside service for Blanche Wicker was held Monday at 3 p.m. at Buffalo Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Darren Moore officiating.

Pallbearers were Dustin Wicker, Ethan Wicker, Danny Lemons, Jess Le Blue and Tim Blakeley.

GENEVA JUDD DONALDSON

SANFORD — Genova “Obie” Judd Donaldson, 88, of 1439 Minter School Road, died Thursday (8/29/13) at Westfield Health and Rehab.

She is survived by two daughters, Vera Shedrick of North Brunswick, N.J., and Lettie Hoggard (Donald) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sons, James (Almeta) of Sanford, Herman and Perry (Constance) and Darrell (Cheryl) Donaldson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., 27 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ufezean of Baltimore, Md., and Magdalene of Miami, Fla.; one brother, Sylvester of Washington, D.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Minter Cemetery. No wake will be held.

CLARENE TRIPP CAMPBELL

SANFORD — Graveside service for Clarene Tripp Campbell, 92, who died Wednesday (8/28/13), was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lee Memory Gardens with the Rev. Lewis Wicker officiating.

Pallbearers were Brandon Cadby, Dennis Brasington, Jeff Mooney, Alan Mauer, Russell Mauer and Christopher Mauer.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Dennis William Womack was held Saturday at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gene Cobb officiating. Organist for the service was Ruth Hoffman.

Burial was at the Shallow Well Cemetery.

Pallbearers for the service were Scott Forbes, William Taylor, Carter Forbes, Scott Blackwelder, Stewart Forbes and Stan Hales.

SILER CITY — Floyd White, 93, of 1380 Sam Lowe Road, died Monday (9/2/13) at Alamance Regional Hospital in Burlington. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts & Son Funeral Home in Siler City.

ATHA ARANT GIBSON

SOUTHERN PINES — Atha Arant Gibson, 95, of St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines died Saturday (8/31/13).

Entombment will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon Memorial Park mausoleum.

Born in Pageland, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Maudie Arant. She lived in Southern Pines for many years and was a former member of Southern Pines United Methodist Church and later attended Pinehurst United Methodist Church. For the last several years she lived at St. Joseph of the Pines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Robert Gibson; a daughter, Carolyn Hicks of Whispering Pines, and a son, Stanley Gibson of Ft. Worth,Texas.

She is survived by her children, Linda Rogers of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Larry Gibson of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Charles Gibson of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

MONNIE HOLDER SULLIVAN

SANFORD — Funeral service for Monnie Holder Sullivan, 90, of the Barbecue Church community, who died Saturday (8/31/13), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sandy Williams and the Rev. Cameron Thomas officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Nancy Holmes. Organist was Dorothy Hales. Soloist was Rene Oakman. The congregation also sang.

Pallbearers were Ed Holder, Andrew Sullivan, Marc Sullivan, Matthew Sullivan, Ricky Sullivan and Tom Williams.
