LINCOLN, NEB. — James Kenneth Dodson passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the home of his daughter, Gwen Powell in Lincoln, Nebraska. In his last days, he rejoiced to be going home to be with his Father in Heaven. Jim was born June 22, 1927, in Kirksville, MO. He married Madelyn Lois Haupt on Nov. 21, 1946 in St. Louis, MO. They shared a beautiful marriage for 61 years. They were the proud parents of three children. Jim was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. The highlight of Jim's childhood was his baptism as a Christian at 10 or 11 years of age. He came out of the water laughing with joy. Along with his brother, he helped his father clean the church and began preaching to his siblings and friends about living a Christian life.
Jim joined the Navy at 16 and became a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps. He served aboard the USS Estes, the command ship for the 7th fleet during WWII. After the war, he worked for his future father-in-law in his paint store and expanded the business by adding a tool rental area. He continued to expand the tool rental business in partnership with his brother, Dale. He was a 32nd degree Mason, an officer of The American Rental Association and active in Dale Carnegie. The family moved to Cary, North Carolina when he was the foreman of a construction company. He became partners with his son, Gregg, and together they created and operated a number of businesses, restoring pianos and office furniture, building clocks, real estate and publishing.
His church was always the focus of his life. He was a Sunday school teacher, a youth MYF leader, and lay leader and later became a Stephen Minister. He participated in the AIDS ministry at his church in Cary. His most recent home church was Jonesboro United Methodist Church in Sanford, NC. His wisdom, strength and dedication to his principles will be missed. Since his retirement he enjoyed his grandchildren and his cat, Foxy. He teased and played with them while teaching them life-long lessons.
Jim is survived by his children, Gwen Powell of Lincoln, NE, Gregg Dodson and his wife Dianne of Sanford and his son-in-law, Tom Gilmore of Charlotte, NC; his siblings, Kenna Leckie of Oregan, John Dodson of Kirkwood, MO, Dale Dodson and his wife Marlene of Louisburg, NC, Jewel Sanders and her husband Nevell of Madison, MO; 16 grandchildren and their partners, 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
