SANFORD — Mary Alice Devoto Barrett, age 69, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at her home.

She was born in St. Louis County, Missouri to the late August G. Devoto and Alice Schnarr Devoto. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Barrett; brother, August Devoto and a sister, Judy Devoto Privitt.

Surviving relatives include son, John David Barrett and wife Lisa of Cameron, N.C.; daughter, Debbie Barrett of Cary, N.C.; brothers, Dick Devoto, Bob Devoto and Donnie Devoto, all of Missouri; sister, Barbara Medina and husband Lupie of Missouri; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Monday, May 20, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the home, 317 Foggy Bottom, Sanford, N.C. There was no visitation at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be conducted at Lemon Springs Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Andy Foley and Dr. Jim Whitehead officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

HICKORY — Betty Newton Carpenter Jones died Saturday on her 87th birthday at Lutheran Home West in Hickory.

Born in Hickory, May 18, 1926, to Lela Hillard and Cecil Doerman Newton, Betty attended Oakwood and Hickory High Schools.

A war bride, Betty wed Stirling Stewart Carpenter Sr., with whom she had four children. After Stirling’s death, she married Frank J. Jones, also deceased. Betty has been incapacitated since a stroke in 1998.

She is survived by a sister, Mildred C. Newton of Morganton; children, Lynne (Mrs. David) Sparks, Jo Carol (Mrs. Scott) Thomason, both of Hickory, Jonathan Scot (Mrs. Robyn) Carpenter of Sanford; eight grandchildren, Stirling S. Carpenter of Durham; Steven (Mrs. Lori) Sparks, Laura (Mrs. David) Caldwell, Lela (Mrs. Lawrence) Thompson, all of Hickory; Carrie (Mrs. Paul) Gates of New York City; Jonathan Carpenter of Sanford; Celia (Mrs. Scott) Everett of Ohio; Elizabeth Thomason of Greensboro; and 12 great-grandchildren. A son, Stirling S. Carpenter Jr., died in 1977.

Betty attended St. Paul’s Lutheran, First United Methodist, and Holy Trinity Lutheran churches. Following cremation and interment, Rev. Bill Miller-Zurell will officiate at a memorial service to be held in Holy Trinity’s nave, at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. The family will greet guests in the church parlor one hour prior to the service.

ANGIER — James “Jimmy” Carson Byrd, age 57, of Angier, N.C. died peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

He was born on July 11, 1955 in Dunn, N.C. Jimmy was a veteran of his country and served in the United States Army and served one tour stationed in Germany. He previously worked for the W. Koury Company for over 20 years as a mechanic and for Performance Fibers for 25 years as a foreman. Jimmy enjoyed life to the fullest, friendship, and loved everyone.

He is survived by his mother, Ann Lyons; his children: Justin Byrd, Amy Farrish and her husband Antonio Farrish, Stephanie Curtis and Jesse Daniels, Branson Mann, and Skylar Mann, all of Sanford; three sisters: Vickie Buckmaster, Jessica Donald and husband Stephen, Karen Mull and husband David; three brothers: Fred Defeo and wife Darlene, Chuck Lyons and wife Heather, and Leo Quick and wife Ann; grandchildren: Dylon Curtis, Zariah Daniels, Alexus Alston, Brianna Creque, and Jazlynn Farrish; and a friend who was more than a brother, Kirk Praster. He also leaves behind his baby, “Lillian”. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Tucker Byrd and his step-father, Chuck Lyons.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 6-9 p.m at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.

BROADWAY — Frank Upchurch Roberts, 34, died Friday (5/17/13).

He was a Boy Scout growing up. He was preceded in death by his father, James Murchison Roberts; and grandparents, Bill and Margaret Roberts, and Frank and Alberta Upchurch.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Angela Joy Gentry Roberts; two daughters, Amanda and Nicole Klingman; a son, Brandon Klingman; mother, Joeann Upchurch Roberts; two brothers, Anthony Hunter and wife Jackie, and James Murchison Roberts Jr. and wife Susan; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

SANFORD — Helen Priscilla Upchurch Cummings, 67, died Saturday (5/18/13).

She was born in Harnett County to the late Malcom Upchurch and Lucille Wimberly Upchurch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Andrew Cummings; brother, Jack Upchurch; and sister, Rachel Cotten.

She is survived by one son, Ronnie Claude Cummings of Sanford; daughters, Gaynell Cummings and Rhonda Utley, both of Sanford; brothers, Ray Upchurch of Angier, Burt Upchurch of Broadway, and Mack Upchurch and Tom Upchurch, both of Shallotte; and four grandchildren.

SANFORD — Roy McCormick Bell, 58, died Sunday (5/19/13) at Cornerstone Nursing and Rehab in Dunn.

He was born in Lee County, son of the late Eli Roy Bell and Elizabeth McCormick Bell.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sandy Williams and the Rev. Garland Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She was born in Raleigh and preceded in death by her father, Rufus Alonzo Morris, and mother, Annie Lee Brown Oldham.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue Arnold McNeill and husband William of Sanford; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

The family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at Faith Bible Church.

SANFORD — Lucian Issac Clark Jr., 92, died Sunday (5/19/13) at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Memorial Chapel.

He was born in Chatham County, a son of the late Lucian Clark Sr. and Olivia Pendergrass Clark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethleen Wheeler Clark; a son, Eugene; his second wife, Louise Clark; a brother, McDonald Clark; and four sisters, Irene Cooper, Lillie Dale, Mary Williams and Lucille Williams.

He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Clayton of Sanford, Lynn Strickland of Raleigh, and Catherine Hudson and husband Billy of Durham; a son, Gerald Clark and wife Vivian of Broadway; two sisters, Glennie Smith Wall and husband Earl of Wake Forest and Maxine Morris of Pittsboro; 12 grandchildren and 25 great- grandchildren.
