VASS — James Roland Grissom, 87, passed away Saturday evening, December 8, at St. Joseph of the Pines, Southern Pines.

Mr. Grissom was a native of Montgomery County but lived most of his adult life in Vass. He served as the Chief of Police in Vass for 30 years. After his formal retirement as Police Chief, he began working for the Moore County Sheriff's Department and remained for more than a decade.

Mr. Grissom had a deep love for children and, while with the Vass Police Department, daily directed traffic at Vass-Lakeview School, where he always safely escorted children across US Highway #1. One of his favorite pastimes occurred during the Christmas season, when he became Santa Claus, everywhere. Mr. Grissom also served one term as a town commissioner for the Town of Vass.

He was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his community service, including the Governor's Award for Volunteer Service, Dept. of the Treasury ATF Certificate of Appreciation, Vass-Lakeview School Volunteer of the Year, Carthage Rotary Distinguished Citizen, and Moore County Schools Volunteer of the Year.

Mr. Grissom is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Nora Thomas Grissom; two sons, Rev. David R. Grissom and wife Sue, of Creedmoor; and Paul W. Grissom and wife Evelyn, of New Palestine, Indiana; one sister, Mrs. Bernice Price of Sanford, NC; and one brother, Mr. Bobby Grissom and wife Nancy of Sanford, NC. He was known as Papa G to his six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Vass United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2012, with Rev. Phil Brown and Rev. David Beck officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson's Grove Cemetery near Vass.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 14, 2012 at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines from 6-8 p.m. Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to the Vass United Methodist Church, 111 Alma Street, Vass, NC 28394.

SANFORD — Harold Franklin Gilmore, 64, died Thursday (12/6/12) at his home.

He was born in Lee County, on May 15, 1948, to the late John Marvin Gilmore and Annie Lou Clouis Cole Gilmore. He was a retired crane operator at Lee Iron and Metal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur Lee Gilmore and Roy Wayne Gilmore; and by a sister, Jonnie Carol Gilmore.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Carol Gunter Gilmore; sons, Joseph Harold Gilmore of Richmond, Va., and John Anthony Gilmore and wife Carla of Sanford; daughter, Frankie Rene Gilmore of Sanford; brothers, Donnie Gilmore and wife Cheryl of Asheboro, Vernon Gilmore and wife Bessie, and Roger Gilmore and wife Catherine, all of Sanford, and John Gilmore Jr. of Angier; sisters, Marvelene Corcoran of Nashville, Tenn., Shirley Thompson of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Barbara Graham and husband Al of Olivia, Faye Hollady and husband Alton of Ramseur, Brenda Denkins and husband Benny of Sanford, and Debbie O'Quinn and husband David of Broadway; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 12:30 p.m. until the funeral hour at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Moncure Methodist Church Cemetery.

SANFORD — May Ola Gordon Kerr, 83, died Saturday (12/8/12) at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

She was born in Chatham County, on May 10, 1929, to the late James Warwick “Jim” Gordon and Nannie Mae Williams Gordon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Emerson Gordon. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she was the church secretary for over 40 years.

She is survived by a brother, James Gordon and wife Rhonda of Sanford; two sisters, Barbara Gordon Stanley and husband Bill, and Martha Bright, all of Sanford; and a sister-in-law, Betty Gordon of Chapel Hill.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Asbury United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Burns and the Rev. Ira Smith officiating.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Barbara Stanley and husband Bill, 3670 Mays Chapel Road.

SANFORD — Fletcher Franklin Phillips, 76, died Monday (12/10/12) at his home.

He was born in Moore County, on Feb. 28, 1936. to the late Henry Fletcher Phillips and Lora Belle Smith Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Faye Phillips; brother, Carl Furman Phillips; and sisters, Lora Phillips Williams and Alta Phillips Williams. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a building contractor for many years. He retired as an elevator technician. He was a member of Lemon Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Juanita Caviness Phillips; son, Brian Fletcher Phillips and wife Lisa of Deep River; two daughters, Ginger Phillips Galloway and husband Ernie of Southern Pines, and Teresa Phillips Treadwell and husband Jim of Madison, Ga.; brother, William Atlas Phillips and wife Betsy of Deep River; two sisters, Bonnie Phillips Van Gorder and husband Ken of Vesta, Va., Myrtle Phillips Jones and husband Bruce of New Hill; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at the family home from 3 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lemon Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Andy Foley officiating. Burial will follow at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Linda Lou Garner, 67, who died Tuesday (12/4/12), was conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pineywood Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Calhoun presiding. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

The congregation sang and Norris Jones played the guitar. Various family and friends spoke and shared remembrances. Lori Caviness spoke and shared a tribute song.

Pallbearers were David Benson, Shawn Barnard, Mickey Britt, Brandon Caviness, Braxton Cooley and Kaleb Gill.
