WILLIAM ALLEN REED

SANFORD — William Allen Reed of Sanford died Saturday, June 14, 2014.

He was born in Opheim, Montana, the youngest child of Gertrude and Charles Henry Reed. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Marty; grandchild William Reed Ollett, and five siblings: half-sister Dorothy, sister Margaret Ellen, and brothers David, George, and Leland.

He is survived by son, Carl (Drucilla) and daughter, Martha Ellen Ollett (Frederick), and three grandchildren, Frederick Benjamin Ollett (Megan), Robert Reed Ollett, and Martha Elizabeth Ollett.

He attended Harvard University on a National Scholarship, graduating with high honors in 1942 with a BS degree in chemistry. He entered graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his doctorate of science in chemical engineering in 1948. During the war years while at MIT he worked on torpedo research. His thirty-year engineering career was spent in the research department at Republic Steel Corporation where he rose to the Director of Research position. He had a number of patents at Republic.

Bill and Marty retired to Sanford and lived in the South Landing community at Carolina Trace where they made many new friends. They were avid golfers. Bill was active in a Sanford investment club. There were salmon fishing expeditions with his brother Dave, and great satisfaction in creatively tackling home improvement projects. He remained active into his 90's, and he became Marty's principal caregiver for the last eight years of her life.

The family thanks the caregivers of Community Home Care & Hospice for their compassionate end of life care.

A private service will be held in Montana.

WOODROW MACK NIXON

SANFORD — Mr. Woodrow Mack Nixon, age 92, of Sanford, NC, died Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Parkview Retirement Center.

He was born in Surry County, NC on October 22, 1921 to the late Nathaniel Esker Nixon and Bertha Elizabeth Denny Nixon. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margie Lee Hickman Nixon and siblings, Polly Nixon Hancock, David Ray Nixon, Warrie Robert (Bob) Nixon, Charles Esker Nixon and Sallie Nixon Wade. Mr. Nixon owned and operated W.M. Nixon Construction Company before his retirement. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the VFW and was an American Legion member.

He is survived by his son, Terry Mack Nixon of Sanford; daughter, Sharon Louise Nixon-Escochea of Torrance, CA; and sister, Mary Thompson of Sanford; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Nixon Biggers, Gavin Del Gado, Rachel Escochea, Jocelyn Collins and Kristy Patton; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home from 6-8 PM and the funeral service will be Monday, June 23rd at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Dr. Royce Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

CARRBORO — Sharon Phillips, 56, of 3995 Jones Ferry Road, Carrboro, died Thursday (6/12/14) at her residence.

She is survived by her son, Gregory Antwoinne Phillips of Greensboro; one brother, Robert Davis Alston of Sanford; two sisters, Wendy Kaye Shelton of Pittsboro and Carolyn Marie Alston of Sanford; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church in Pittsboro. Burial will follow at Terells Chapel AME Zion Church.

Family will receive friends at 239 Masonic St., Pittsboro.

LOUISE AVERY COOK STEWART

SANFORD — Louise Avery Cook Stewart, 92, of Sanford, died Tuesday (6/17/14) at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

She was born on June 20, 1921, in Harnett County, to the late Dewey T. Avery and Sally Gaster Avery. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Benjamin Cook and Floyd R. Stewart.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Moody and husband Ted of Lincolnton; two sons, Larry Cook and wife Sophia of Southern Pines, and Jimmy Cook and wife Trisha of Sanford; two stepsons, Nicky Stewart and wife Sandra and David Stewart and wife Susan, all of Coats; a stepdaughter, Vickie Johnson of Coats; two sisters, Ann Barefoot of Four Oaks and Janice Autry of Keller, Texas; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Blair Little and the Rev. Roberta Byram officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

MARGARET CLARK CIRONE

VASS — Margaret Clark Cirone, 71, died Tuesday (6/17/14) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Eugene Ussery and Pastor John Chavis. Burial will follow at Cross Hill Cemetery.

A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Claude M. and Alma E. Jackson Clark. She graduated from Carthage High School and Sanford Business College. She was a former town clerk for the town of Carthage and also worked for over 20 years as town clerk for the town of Vass. For the last several years, she was the secretary for the First Baptist Church in Carthage.

She is survived by her daughters, Melanie Thomas and Kelly Thomas, both of Vass; son, Scott Thomas of Cameron; sister, Brenda Kay Smith of Carthage and Martha Moore and husband David of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. today and other times at the home.

MARGUERITE COGGINS FOSTER FERGUSON

SANFORD — Funeral service for Marguerite Coggins Foster Ferguson of Sanford, who died Saturday (6/14/14), was held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Grace Chapel with the Rev. Robert Yandle and the Rev. Dan Coggins officiating.

Soloist and guitarist was Ronnie Cox.

Active pallbearers were Reid Coggins, Tim Coggins, Robert Lee, Chris Coggins, Dale Fogarty and Bobby Welch. Honorary pallbearers in body and in spirit were Karl Logan, Branson Coggins, David Lee, Donnie Lee, Ronald Logan, Lowell Gunter and Tommy Logan.

FRANCES LESLIE WINSTEAD

SANFORD — Funeral service for Frances Leslie Winstead, 96, who died Monday (6/16/14) at Parkview Retirement Center, was conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Sayles and the Rev. Thomas K. Spence (son-in-law) officiating. A private family burial was held at Buffalo Cemetery prior to the funeral services.

Pianist was Susan Gaster, music leader was the Rev. Ronnie Byrd and the congregation sang.

MARGIE CAMPBELL THOMAS

BROADWAY — Funeral service for Margie Campbell Thomas, 90, of Broadway, who died Saturday (6/14/14), was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holly Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Parsons officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

During the service, Lynn Green, Cynthia Spivey and Richard Sistrunk sang, and Louise Oyster was the pianist.

Pallbearers were Phil Roy Patterson, Ryan Patterson, Jerry Rosser, Marvin Johnson, Greg Thomas and Jeffrey Thomas.

FAYETTEVILLE — Marian Jean Register, 60, of Alleghany Road, Fayetteville, died Wednesday (6/11/14) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

She is survived by her husband, Boonie Register; sons, Boonie Register Jr., Daniel Register and Ryan Register; and daughter, Melissa Register.

Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary in Fayetteville. Burial will follow at Lafayette West Cemetery in Fayetteville.

JOHN WILLIAM LOUER JR.

SANFORD — John William Louer Jr., 97, died Wednesday (6/18/14) at his home.

He was born in Lawrence County, Pa., on June 22, 1916 to the late John William Louer and Mildred Elizabeth Welch. He was a retired sales engineer.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith Ann Louer of Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Jonesboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hunter Preston officiating.

ROBBINS — Leonard E. Williams, 80, of 149 Ronsha Lane, Robbins, died Monday (6/16/14) at home.

He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Thelma Barrett-Williams; three sons, James L. Barrett, Richard E. Williams and Jeffrey M. Williams; three daughters, Deborah Thompson (Junnie), Betty E. Moore (Kenneth) and Sheila Williams; two brothers, Elder Billy S. Williams (Viola) and Willie H. Williams (Lavern); five sisters, Belle Person, Mary E. Taylor, Betty Shamberger, Mattie Williams and Jessie M. Barrett (Robert); 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Long Leaf AME Zion Church in Robbins with the Rev. Jeff Person and the Rev. Linda Wharton officiating. Burial will follow at New Zion Cemetery in Robbins. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
