LEWIS COOPER YOW

SANFORD — Mr. Lewis Cooper Yow, 79, of Sanford, N.C., died Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

Mr. Yow was born on September 2, 1933, in Lee County, N.C. to the late Lewis Franklin Yow and Lucy DeMent Yow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Yow Kowalski.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon and Elder Emeritus. Mr. Yow had retired as Superintendent of the City of Sanford Water Plant where he worked for 35 years. He was a member of the Sanford Lions Club and was a life member of the N.C. Waterworks Association. He was an avid Carolina fan and an Atlanta Braves baseball fan.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Blaylock Yow; daughters, Katrina Johnson and husband Bobby, and Cheryl Taylor and husband Russell all of Sanford; three grandchildren, Keith Taylor, Jeremy Taylor and Mary Lewis Johnson and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, April 14, 2013, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM (one hour prior to the funeral service) in the Colonnade at The First Presbyterian Church. The funeral will follow at 3:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wendell McGee and Rev. Betty Sherrod officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

CHAPEL HILL — Florence Lee Hopkins, 83, of 2003 Neville Road, died Tuesday (4/9/13) at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home of Pittsboro.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Brenda McKeithen Fox, 63, formerly of Sanford, died Wednesday (4/3/13) at University Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Nebo FWB Church. Interment will follow at Minter Cemetery.

She is survived by husband, Robert (Shag) Fox Sr. of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Kim Fox and Vickie McKeithen; three sons, Rodney and Ken McKeithen, and Robert Fox Jr.; two brothers, Billy and Marshall McKeithen; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 607 Frazier Drive, home of Patricia McKeithen.

BROADWAY — Jerry D. Murchison Jr., 86, of Burgess Circle, died Wednesday (4/10/13) at his residence.

He is survived by two daughters, Margaret M. Raines (Wavie) of Lillington and Elaine Murchison of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Lacy Leroy Murchison of Carthage and William McLeod (Carolyn) of Austin, Texas; one sister, Eula B. Rollins of Sacramento, Calif.; and one brother, James W. Murchison of Vallejo, Calif.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Knotts Funeral Home.

SANFORD — Lillian Jones, 96, of 16010 Hwy 421S, died Sunday (4/7/13) at her home.

She is survived by her daughters, Ruby Singletary (John) of Bear Creek, Evonne Craven (Stephen) and Hazel Roberts, all of Sanford, and Zelma Davis (Carl) of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Linwood Jones (Helen) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Nilas "Chuck" Jones (Pamela) of Knightdale; a sister, Rachel Rogers of Goldston; a sister-in-law, Mary Reaves of Greensboro; 27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia AME Zion Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors 30 minutes prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

LILLINGTON — Jerald Stewart, 67, died Tuesday (4/9/13) at Green Leaf Assisted Living Facility in Lillington.

A native of Harnett County, he was the son of the late Arthur Lucius and Burlena Johnson Stewart. He was a retired salesman, representing various companies throughout his lifetime.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel with the Rev. Chris Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Mamers.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the home of Cary and Susan Stewart.

He is survived by his daughter, Kim Hild and husband Edgar of Florida; two brothers, Cary Stewart and wife Susan of Lillington and Larry Stewart and wife Wanda of Mamers; and three grandchildren.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Mary Ann Hogan Yow, 87, who died Monday (4/8/13), was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Center United Methodist Church by Pastor Chris Humphreys. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

During the service, the congregation sang and special music was played. Pianist was Melody White-Humphreys.

Pallbearers were Craig Carney, Lucas Carney, Josh Carney, David Roth, Douglas Roth and Richard Yow.

  DOUGLAS STEVEN MABE JR.

SANFORD — Douglas Steven Mabe Jr., 61, died Wednesday (4/10/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1951 in Pulaski, Va., to the late Douglas Steven Mabe and Freeda Dalton Mabe. He grew up in Athens, Tenn., but lived in Sanford for 30 years. He was an electrician with Johnson Controls and loved Tennessee football.

He is survived by his wife, Vicke Callicott Mabe; one son, John Mabe of Sanford; four daughters, Wendy Dula and husband Tucker Mabry of Spartanburg, S.C., Molly Cotham of Pinehurst, and Betsy Mabe and Rachel Mabe, both of Sanford; one sister, Rebecca Steere of Ontario, Canada; and six grandchildren.

A private memorial service for close family and friends will be held at a later date.

SILER CITY — Matida “Pat” Spencer, 100, formerly of Siler City, died Tuesday (4/2/13) in Philadelphia, Pa.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Corinth AME Zion Church cemetery.

She is survived by her son, Robert “Pete” Scarboro Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; sister, Arleen Laster of Siler City; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Clayboun Ray Davis, 88, who died Sunday (4/7/13), was held Thursday (4/11/13) at 2 p.m. at Olivia Presbyterian Church with Chaplain Joel Cameron and the Rev. Sandy Williams officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery with military rites.

Pianist was Holly Walton and soloist was Claudia Pace, who sang two hymns. The congregation also sang.

Pallbearers were Ricky Sullivan, Robert Davis, James Davis, Terry Strickland, Richard Campbell and Timmy Hickman.

  DR. HENRY F. HOLT

YOUNGSVILLE — Dr. Henry F. Holt, 69, died Thursday (4/11/13).

A native of Johnston County, he retired in 2004 as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Franklin County Schools. He continued to be an active board member of the United Way of Franklin County. He served 15 years as a high school principal in Johnston, Jones and Harnett counties. Before entering the field of education, he was program director and morning personality at WETC radio in Wendell-Zebulon. He was predeceased by his parents, James C. and Myrtie M. Holt; his daughter, Donna Holt; and siblings, Ed Holt, Clarence Holt, Earl Holt, Howard Holt, Doris H. Richardson, Ann H. Hall and Maxine Holt.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Dorcas B. Holt; daughter, Dawn Hall of Raleigh; stepdaughter, Karen Norris of Wilmington; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including adopted nephew Carl Holt; and many friends and family.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday at Baptist Tabernacle Church in Wendell, and other times at the family home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Baptist Tabernacle Church in Wendell. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.

Flowers accepted or contributions can be made to the building funds of Tabernacle Baptist Church and Youngsville Baptist Church. Contributions can also be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Dr. Holt's memory.

BENSON — Maude Evelyn Lee, 84, of 605 West Harnett St., died Thursday (4/11/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson with the Rev. Charles Royal and the Rev. Ronnie Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Lee Family Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 24, 1928, in Johnston County to the late Rufus and Mollie Ryals Lee. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Claudia Stephenson; and brothers, Worth Lee and Bobby Lee. She was the office manager for Benton Card Company and was a member of Benson Baptist Church. She also operated Bill's Frame Shop in Benson.

She is survived by several nieces and a nephew.

The family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
