SOUTHERN PINES — Elizabeth Christman Bowman “Chris” died April 21, 2013.

She was born on October 5, 1922 in Hamburg, PA and was the daughter of Charles T. Christman and Esther Wortley Christman.

She is survived by her husband, Charles F. Bowman Jr., and her two sons, Dr. C. Jeffrey Bowman and his wife Nancy of Bluffton, SC and Dr. James T. Bowman and his wife Donna of Trumbull, CT. A third son, Thomas H. Bowman, died in August 1999. She is also survived by six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Claire Croft.

After attending public schools in Hamburg, PA, Chris enrolled at Pennsylvania State College in 1940. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was an attendant for the May Queen in 1941 and was elected Froth Queen in 1942. In the second semester of her freshman year, she met her future husband, Charles “Chuck”, who was then a junior at Penn State. She graduated from Penn State in February 1944.

Chris and Chuck married on June 19, 1943 after his return from his first tour of duty on the USS Ranger in the Atlantic Ocean. For the duration of the war, Chris completed her studies at Penn State and worked for her father who was an ice cream manufacturer in Hamburg, PA.

After the war, Chris and Chuck moved to Hamburg, PA where they raised their first two boys, Jeffrey and Thomas. Chuck worked for her father in the ice cream manufacturing business. In 1954 the family moved from Hamburg, PA to Skaneateles, NY where their third son James was born. In 1961, the family moved to the suburb of Pittsford, NY.

Chris was a stay at home mom until the boys were in high school. As the boys become more independent, Chris went to work as a teller at First Federal Savings and Loan. She was subsequently promoted to the main office as an executive secretary to a Vice President of the bank. In later years, she was selected for training in New York City at the World Trade Center for installation of new procedures at the bank.

Chris and Chuck retired in 1985. They moved to Carolina Trace in Sanford, NC in 1987 where they both enjoyed golf, gardening and travel. After 13 wonderful years they moved 20 miles to Southern Pines, NC, where they resided at the Belle Meade Retirement Community until her death.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at the Belle Meade Chapel on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Carl Matthews officiating.

GOLDSTON — Robert (Bobby) R. Spence III, 57, of 2831 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, died Thursday (4/11/13) at his home.

He was born in New London, Conn., on Nov. 24, 1955, the son of Robert R. II and Margaret Mae (Davis) Spence. He was employed as a S.A. Counselor and was a Marine veteran. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sallianne Spence.

He is survived by his former wife, Yaland Spence; four sisters, Delores Gibson of North Carolina, Mary Jean Carter of Texas, Jennifer Cowgill of Arizona, and Dora Haberstroh of Texas; and two brothers, Michael Spence of New London, Conn., and John Lee of North Carolina.

A private service will be held at a later date.

BENNETT — Mary Ruth Beal Brewer, 88, formerly of 897 Clarence Phillips Road, died Tuesday (4/23/13) at Siler City Center in Siler City.

Funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel with the Rev. Scott Allmon officiating. Burial will follow at Fall Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was born in Harnett County and was retired from Mid-State Poultry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Lee Brewer; daughter, Nadine Maness, and grandson. She was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughters, Irene Tillman and husband Robert of Goldston, and Rosa Parker and husband Erby of Sanford; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

CARTHAGE — Sandra Leigh Olinger, 65, formerly of New Hill, died Sunday (4/21/13) at Tara Plantation of Carthage.

She was born on June 17, 1947, daughter of James Cedrick Olinger and Hazel Louise Tuttle Olinger. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Haywood Independent Bible Church with the Rev. Garland Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She is survived by three brothers, Larry Olinger of Hillsborough, Jerry Olinger of New Hill and Bill Olinger (Christy) of Durham; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service today at the church.

BEAR CREEK — Alene Hanner of 436 Hannertown Road, died Friday (4/19/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She was a member of Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, E.T. Hanner; children, Clarence, Clestine, Debra and Roy; nine grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

SANFORD — Judy Gainey Carson, 70, died Monday (4/22/13) at home.

Graveside service will be held at 12 noon Thursday at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. A visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Adcock Funeral Home & Crematory.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Carson; daughters, Christel Honeycutt and Sonya Raper; sister, Dot; brother, Reuben; and three grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE — Judith (Judy) Wicker Eaton, 71, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday (4/21/13) at home.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Norwood First United Methodist Church in Norwood. The Rev. Doug Hochmuth will officiate. The family will welcome friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

She was born Nov. 2, 1941, in Lee County to the late Bryant Wicker and Louise Kelly Wicker. She had been a teacher at Independence High School in Charlotte where she worked for over 15 years. She later became an educational leader for the state writing test. She was also a Sunday school teacher at Norwood First United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. Eaton, and brother, Bryant Wicker.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Lascelles and husband Mark of London, England; stepdaughter, Susan Thomas and husband Randy of Rural Hall; three grandchildren; sister-in-law, Shirley Wicker; one nephew and two nieces.

CARTHAGE — Lacy Alton Garner, 90, died Monday (4/22/13) at the FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crossroads Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Holyfield officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Moore County. He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. He was aboard the USS Edgecombe, Amphibious Attack Transport from January, 1945 to June, 1946. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, W.W. II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was a son of the late William McLendon and Martha Cockman Garner and was preceded in death by siblings, Marvin Garner, Arthur Garner, Tracy Garner, Grace Jackson, Ella Mae Watson, Dossie Tappen and Cecil Sanders.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Louise; son, Lacy Garner Jr. and wife Kathy Mayes; daughter, Wanda Garner Crenshaw and husband Edward; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins and other times at the home.

SANFORD — Ernest Baldwin, 74, of 804 Juniper St., died Sunday (4/21/13) at Lee County Nursing Center.

He is survived by one son, William Wayne McLean (Norma) of Hinesville, Ga.; two brothers, Charles Henry and Robert Lewis Baldwin (Faye); four sisters, Betty Allen, Barbara McLaughlin, Rosa Mitchell and Mary Davis (Frazier); one uncle; one sister-in-law; stepchildren, Mariam McLean, Angel Bowe (Jesse), Michelle Johnson, Nanette Steadman (James) and Kelley Bellamy; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
