MARTHA EVELYN YOUNT CLINE

SANFORD — Martha Evelyn Yount Cline was born July 29, 1933 in Hickory, North Carolina. She passed away Friday (9/27/13).

After graduating from Hickory High School in 1951, she enrolled at the University of North Carolina. In 1955 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with the first class of nursing students at UNC. Following graduation she served as the first President of the UNC Nursing Alumni Association. She pursued her nursing career as an operating nurse at UNC for two years. In 1954 she married Robert S. Cline, her high school sweetheart. She made her home in Sanford for more than 40 years where she was active in the local community and a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Martha was very proud of her family. They all brought her much happiness and joy. She found great pleasure in their successes. Martha was also proud to have been a nurse and was an active supporter of the University of North Carolina School of Nursing her entire life.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; her four children: Dara Linn and husband Jim Linn of Cary, Phillip Cline and wife Alice Cline of Greensboro, Mark Cline and wife Sandy Cline of Sanford, and Caroline Broughton and husband David Broughton of Wake Forest; and eight grandchildren: Kristin Linn, Jacob Linn, Jennifer Cline, Leighton Cline, Carson Cline, Adam Cline, Robert Broughton and Rachel Broughton.

A private interment will precede a memorial service at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sanford, N.C. on October 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately after the memorial service in the fellowship hall of Trinity Lutheran Church.

REV. GARLAND LEWIS FOUSHEE

MONCURE — Rev. Garland Lewis Foushee, age 89, of Moncure, NC, died Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Duke University Hospital.

He was born in Lee County, NC on January 7, 1924 to the late Marvin Carl Foushee and Lessie Byrd Foushee. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers Elton B. Foushee, Carl Clifton Foushee, Malcom Ross Foushee, Russell Foushee, John Vernon Foushee; and sister Bronnie Myers Acorn.

Rev. Foushee attended Campbell College, Wake Forest College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and finished his degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as pastor of East Sanford Baptist Church in Sanford for 14 years. Rev. Foushee also pastored in the following North Carolina locations: Turkey, Maysville, Henderson, Zebulon, Beulaville and Fairmont. In 1991, he retired and returned to the family homeplace in Chatham County. He was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church in Moncure.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ethel Henderson Foushee; son Kenneth Foushee and wife Nancy of Sanford; two daughters, Karen Foushee Cameron and husband Jimmy of Sanford, Beth Foushee Brafford and husband Jeff of Broadway; two sisters, Reda Partin and husband Fred of Moncure, Coleen Boone of Pittsboro; three grandchildren, Kensey Foushee Erkes and husband Jason of LaGrange, Karey Foushee of Sanford and Will Brafford of Broadway.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at East Sanford Baptist Church fellowship hall. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM with Rev. Robbie Gibson and Rev. Julian Motley officiating. Burial will follow at Gum Springs Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Jackie Franks officiating.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Arley D. "JC" Yow Jr., 74, who died Thursday (9/26/13), was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev Houston Blair. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

During the service, the congregation and the church choir sang. Pianist was Eilene Cotton. Words of remembrance were by Stephanie Davis and Jason Yow.

Pallbearers were Daryl Akridge, Jason Akridge, Tony Akridge, TJ Akridge, Terrence Miller, Lance Powers and Jason Yow.

MONICA INGRID GNYP LUGAVERE

SANFORD — Monika Ingrid Gnyp Lugavere, 59, died Friday (9/27/13) at her home.

She was born in Hamburg, Germany, on Aug. 5, 1954, to the late Martin Gnyp and Erika Steinert Gnyp. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, Brian Lugavere and wife Lauren of Hayes, Va.; a daughter, Melissa Marcum and husband Chris of Sanford; brothers, Martin Gnyp and wife Joni of Rocky Point and Dieter Gnyp and wife Edna of Raleigh; and four grandchildren.

EARL L. PATRICK

LILLINGTON — Earl L. Patrick, 81, of Broadway, died Thursday (9/26/13) at Liberty Commons Nursing Home.

A native of Harnett County, he was the son of the late Johnnie and Geneva Darroch Patrick. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Bradley Malloy, and a brother, Jack Patrick. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a dual member of both the Lillington and Westhampton Masonic Lodge and a longtime employee of RBI Corporation in Ashland, Va.

A graveside service was conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday at Harnett Memorial Park Cemetery in Lillington with the Rev. Dr. Roger Horne officiating.

He is survived by his son, John Patrick of Texas; one grandson; one great-grandson; brother, Tommy Patrick of Lillington; sisters, Sandra Harrington and Elvira Bartley, both of Broadway, Beatrice Coats of Lillington, and Linda Millican of Fuquay-Varina; and a special friend, Joan Young of Richmond, Va.

VIRGINIA MAE POWERS HUSSEY

ROBBINS — Virginia Mae Powers Hussey, 92, of 780 N. Howards Mill Road, died Saturday (9/28/13) at her home.

Graveside service will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Curtis Barbery officiating.

She was born in Randolph County to the late J.B. and Bertie Powers. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and had worked in the textiles industry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Harding Hussey; son, David Baxter Hussey; and brothers, Ulysses Powers and Charles Powers.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Candace Ray Davis, who died Sunday (9/22/13), was held Thursday at Saint Luke UMC by the Rev. Dr. A. Gene Cobb Jr. and the Rev. Jaye White.

Pallbearers were Billy Parrish, Harris Ray, Ron Brooks, Sandy Wicker, Jay Jackson and Dan Beideger.

During the service the congregation sang with Dianne Stanley as the organist; soloist was David Mellnik.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Dolores West Cole, 84, who died Friday (9/27/13), was held Monday at Rogers Memorial Chapel by Pastor Eugene Powers. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

During the service, Ryan Barbato sang. The eulogy was given by granddaughter, April Cole Matthews.

Pallbearers were Wayne Blalock, Mike Cole, Harry Freeman, Vernon Joye, Don Matthews and David Strunks.

LAWRENCE JAMES MCLEAR

SANFORD — Lawrence James “Red” McLear, 91, died Thursday (9/26/13).

A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

He was born in Tupper Lake, N.Y., in 1922. He enlisted in the Marines in 1941 and spent most of his tour in the Philippines as a tail gunner. He was employed as a district sales manager for Metropolitan Life Ins. Company. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, the Carolina Trace Fire Dept., Meals on Wheels, and Carolina Trace events and committees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; brothers, Edgar, James and Kenneth; sister, Jean Gonyea; and son-in-law James Villiers.

He is survived by his children, Michael James McLear and wife Donna, Thomas S. McLear and wife Barbara, Jane Lovely and husband Mark, Mary Jo Demick and husband William, Lawrence McLear and wife Modine, and Ann Joplin and husband William, all of Massachusetts, and Carol Villiers of North Carolina; sisters, Barbara LaVallee and Teressa Walker; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A. MARIE PHILLIPS

SANFORD — A. Marie Phillips, 77, formerly of Edwardsville, Ill., died Monday (9/30/13) at her home.

She was born on July 12, 1936, in Kane, Greene County, Ill., to the late Aden Darrel Abbott and Esther Marie Bethel. She was a retired educator. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was involved with the Women's Relief Society where she formerly served as president for many years. She enjoyed genealogy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Phillips, and her brother, Bruce Williams.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter J. Phillips; a daughter, Heather Phillips of Sanford; a son, Keith Phillips of Sanford; and a sister, Sandra Williams of Edwardsville, Ill.

Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

SILER CITY — Funeral service for Thomas (Tom) Marion Burnette, who died Wednesday (9/25/13), was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lamberet Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Siler City. Burial was at the church cemetery.

HENRY CLAUSON GLOVER

SILER CITY — Henry Clauson Glover, 79, of 56 Hedgepath Road, died Friday (9/27/13).

He was employed by a poultry plant in Siler City. He was a member of Glovers Grove AME Zion Church.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Glovers Grove AME Zion Church. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Glover; two sons, Johnny Glover and Kenneth McSwain, both of Siler City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

BETTY LEWIS GARNER

ROBBINS — Betty Lewis Garner, 85, died Sunday (9/29/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Rest Cemetery in Robbins with the Rev. Jon Neuhs officiating. The family will receive friends at Elise Presbyterian Church following the service.

A native of Moore County, she was born June 6, 1928, to the late Coy Stephen Lewis and Elma Morrison Lewis. She attended Elise High School, where she was class salutatorian, and Women’s College in Greensboro (now UNCG). She married Arnold Garner in 1950 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2010. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Garner Seawell; granddaughter, Hannah Seawell; siblings, Hazel Lewis McLaurin, Margaret Lewis Cleetwood, Coy Stephen Lewis Jr. and Patricia Lewis Stephens.

She is survived by her son, Mark Lewis Garner and partner Cynthia Reeves of Pinebluff; daughter Beth Garner Hall and husband Lee of Cary, and three grandchildren.
