MARGARET JO ANN JACKSON KOLMONEN

ABERDEEN — Margaret Jo Ann Jackson Kolmonen, 74, died Monday (9/30/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital of Pinehurst.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at New Life Tabernacle UPC in Aberdeen with Dwight Young officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery in Aberdeen.

She was born in Smithfield on Dec. 15, 1938, to Claude and Annie Callahan Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Nelson Jackson, and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Larry; one daughter, Lisa Young and husband Dwight of Seven Lakes; one son, Billy Lee and wife Teresa of Eagle Springs; one sister, Katherine Stephenson of Clayton; one brother, James Jackson of Southern Pines; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Life Tabernacle UPC, 220 N. Pine St., Aberdeen, N.C. 28315.

MARLYN D. STERN

LILLINGTON — Marlyn D. Stern, 72, died Saturday (9/28/13) at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

He was born Dec. 13, 1940 in Mitchell, S.D., and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1986 with a bachelor degree in accounting, he worked as an auditor for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) until his retirement in 2005.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Virginia Stern; one daughter, Virginia Gregg (Chris) of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Jim Stern (Kathy) of Mitchell, S.D.; one brother, Ray Stern (Sharon Stern) of Mitchell, S.D.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall prior to the service. Burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

PITTSBORO — Emma Delois Reaves, 90, of 1988 Hwy 902, died Tuesday (10/1/13) at her residence. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Willie Tabon, 57, of 211 Circle Drive, who died Tuesday (9/24/13), was held Monday at First Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas E. Smith Sr. and the Rev. Linda Smith presiding. Burial was at Minter Cemetery.

The church choir sang and Amanda Nettles was soloist.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

PITTSBORO — Funeral service for the Rev. Ervin Dowdy, 93, of 7270 Moncure-Pittsboro Road, who died Thursday (9/26/13), was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Moncure with the Rev. Laura Headen officiating. Burial was at Seymour Cemetery.

Musician was Darrell Dowdy and soloist was Minister Cathy T. Smith.

Pallbearers were nephews.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Brandon Ocltree, 30, of Hempstead, N.Y., who died Friday (9/20/13), was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Blandonia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gerome Williams officiating. Burial was at Minter Cemetery.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

FAYETTEVILLE — Connie McKay, 47, of 1623-29 Melvinville Court, died Saturday (9/28/13) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be handled by Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary in Fayetteville.

BARBARA JOHNSON

FAYETTEVILLE — Barbara Johnson, 71, of 6553 Vineyard Drive, died Tuesday (9/24/13) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary Chapel in Fayetteville. Burial was at Rockfish Memorial Park.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Lee Johnson Sr.; sons Arthur Lee Johnson Jr. of Fayetteville, Perry Hall of Wilmington, Del., and Gregory E. Hall of Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

NORA LEE ALSTON

PITTSBORO — Nora Lee Alston, 89, of 1410 Alston Chapel Road, died Saturday (9/28/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She was the daughter of the late Hattie and Hubbie Alston. She attended A&T University.

She is survived by two sons, Ike Alston (Dianne) and Joseph Alston; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 12 step-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Alston Chapel United Holy Church in Pittsboro. Viewing will be held one hour prior to service.

JOHN THOMAS VERNON

SANFORD — John Thomas “Tom” Vernon, 87, died Monday (9/30/13).

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was born in Akron, Ohio, son of the late Lena McNamara and Ernest W. Vernon. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Hunter Vernon. He was a Navy veteran of W.W. II and the Korean Conflict. He was involved in the textile industry in both sales and ownership. He was a past business advisor with CCCC, past president of the Sanford Chamber of Commerce, and involved with the Parks & Recreation Boards.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hankins Vernon; his children, Patty Maier and husband George of Gastonia, David Vernon and wife Teresa of Greensboro, Eric Vernon and wife Kelly of Sanford, and Molly Feichter and husband Will of Raleigh; 12 grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia V. Bucci of Florida.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service Sunday in the fellowship hall at Trinity Lutheran Church, and other times at the family home.

JAMES ARCHIE STONE SR.

SANFORD — James Archie Stone Sr., 84, died Tuesday (10/1/13) at his home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

He was born in Lee County, son of the late John D. Stone and Georgia Mae Medlin Stone. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Elizabeth Cole Stone; and siblings Nancy Hicks, Herbert Stone, Lynn Stone and Elizabeth Jones. He retired from the Air Force and the Lee County Sheriff’s Dept.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Rosser and husband Steve and Renee Clayton, all of Sanford; one son, James A. Stone Jr. of Sanford; one sister, Gaynell Elixson and husband Jim of Sanford; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.
