SPENCER BAXLEY GIBSON

SANFORD — Mr. Spencer Baxley Gibson, 60, of Sanford, N.C., died Sunday, January 27, 2013.

Mr. Gibson was born on September 30, 1952, in Lee County, N.C. to the late Allen Eugene Gibson and Sue Efird Gibson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Gibson. Mr. Gibson worked at Goodwin Trucking Company for over 20 years.

Mr. Gibson is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Gibson; a brother, Bill Gibson and wife Jinger, all of Sanford, N.C., and one grandchild, Blake Gibson.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hunter Preston officiating. Burial will follow the service at Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home of Bill and Jinger Gibson, at 2454 Cotten Road, Sanford, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Sue Gibson Nursing Scholarship in care of CCCC Foundation, Kelly Drive, Sanford, N.C. or the American Cancer Society.

MARY FRANCES DICKENS SLOAN

SANFORD — Mary Frances Dickens Sloan, age 80, of Sanford died on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Sanford Health and Rehab in Sanford with her family by her side.

She was born on March 27, 1932 in Shouns, Tenn., to the late Clarence W. Dickens and Lottie Moore Dickens. Mrs. Sloan was a loving mother and grandmother and she was very involved in her children and grandchildren's lives growing up. Her family will forever remember her for being the best of the best. She formerly served as a volunteer at the mental health clinic where she was a nurturing caregiver and would care for them even after their release from the clinic. She was devoted and loving to all who knew her. Mrs. Sloan loved animals and was compassionate about animal welfare. She leaves behind her two dogs: “Little Girl” and “Baby”.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years whom she married on August 14, 1949, William R. “Bobby” Sloan of Sanford, NC; a son, Tim Sloan and wife Sheila of Broadway, NC; two daughters: Susan Miller and husband Alan of Moncure, NC; and Kelly Perry and husand Chap of Sanford, NC; her grandchildren: Hillarey Legette, Chris Sloan, Bonnie Setzer, Dana Slate, Sloan McNeill, C.J. Perry, Steven Miller, Bobby Miller, Clint Miller and Kelly McLain; 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Terry Sloan and a brother, Clarence Dickens.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford with Rev. John Sauls officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

MARGARETTE DOROTHY CAGLE FIELDS

LILLINGTON — Margarette Dorothy Cagle Fields, 95, died Saturday (1/26/13).

She was born in Spartanburg County, S.C., the daughter of the late Joseph and Alice Fields Cagle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Roy E. Fields; daughter, Kathryn F. Abilene; and seven brothers. Prior to moving to Lillington in 1965, she was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville. She was also very active in the Girl Scouts. After moving to Lillington, she was involved in the Four Seasons Garden Club as well as other organizations. She was a member of Lillington Presbyterian Church.

Memorial service was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Lillington Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Goodnight officiating.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirlee Johnson of Lillington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HAROLD ODELL HOLT

SANFORD — Harold Odell Holt, 89, died Saturday (1/26/13).

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Zion Christian Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

He was born in Lee County, son of the late William Wesley Holt and Leathie Ida Dickens Holt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Johnson Holt; and two grandsons.

He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Dixon and husband Joey of Sanford, and Dorothy H. Wright and husband Jessy of Shelby; three sons, Billy Holt and wife Terri and Harold Holt and wife Annette, all of Sanford, and David Holt and wife Brenda of Bear Creek; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, William Wesley Holt Jr. and wife Peggy, and Edward Holt and wife Margie, all of Sanford; and one sister, Ruth Morrison of Sanford.

HAZEL THOMAS FITCH

LAURINBURG — Hazel Thomas Fitch, 90, of Aberdeen died Saturday (1/26/13) at Scotia Village, a Presbyterian Retirement home in Laurinburg.

She was born in Roanoke, Va., in 1922 and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1939. She attended Mars Hill Junior College and Furman University, graduating summa cum laude in 1945. She attended Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She was one of the founding faculty members of Sandhills Community College. She began her 47 years of service in the Adult Basic Education Department in 1964, retiring in 2011 at age 88. She served in Presbyterian Women's work in many capacities and as President of the North Carolina Presbyterian Women in 1974. Most recently, she served as lay minister at Euphronia Presbyterian Church in Sanford for 18 years retiring in October, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Kemper Fitch Jr.; brothers, Robert Wilson Thomas and Carleton Lee Thomas; and sister, Helen Virginia Thomas.

She is survived by her sons, William Kemper Fitch III and his wife Carolyn of Asheboro, and Robert Thomas Fitch of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen with Keith Miller and Jonathan Wallace officiating.

FAYE RAY MCLAUGHLIN

SILER CITY — Faye Ray McLaughlin, 73, of 1013 Candlewood Circle, died Saturday (1/26/13).

She was born Aug. 17, 1939, the daughter of John Van and Mary Gertrude (Harris) Ray. She was a native of Chatham County and worked as a reception PBX operator at Chatham Hospital. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by father, John Van Ray; and husbands, Bobby Clark and R.D. Dorsett.

She is survived by her husband, Daffy McLaughlin; sons, Donald and wife Dela Clark of Snow Hill, and Gerald and wife Javetta Clark of Bear Creek; mother, Mary Gertrude (Harris) Ray, of Siler City; sister, Brenda Saunders of Staley; stepdaughter, Kathy and husband Tim Gardner of Greensboro; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Siler City with the Rev. Clyde Denny and the Rev. Jim Whitaker officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

BILLY BERNARD BRITT (pic) (vet)

LA GRANGE — Billy Bernard Britt, 81, died Wednesday (1/23/13).

He was a Korean War veteran, founder and leader of Britt World Wide, and Amway Founders Crown Ambassador and Founders Council member. He was born to Edward and Vivian Britt in Rocky Mount, N.C., on Aug. 28, 1931. He joined the U.S. Army in 1949, and was quickly selected to attend the Army’s Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Va. He was one of only two candidates in his class without a college degree to be chosen. He excelled in OCS and graduated in the top two of his class. After finishing active duty, he continued to serve his country as commander of a National Guard Reserve Unit. He attended college on the G.I. Bill at N. C. State University in Raleigh, where he studied civil engineering. While in college, he met his wife Peggy Garner. After college he worked as an assistant to the City Manager in Raleigh, and then as City Manager in Sanford and Goldsboro, and Town Manager in Carrboro. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vivian Britt; his father, Edward Britt; and sister, Shirley Faye McDonald.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; sisters, Barbara Todd of Fayetteville, Ginny Kiker of Raleigh and Edith Lynn Kirkland of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Eddie Britt of Fayetteville, Bobby Britt of Raleigh and Jimmy Britt of Orlando, Fla.

Funeral service was held Monday at 1 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with the burial at Fairview Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. at Tammy’s home.

She is survived by her children, Jeremy Lawson and Sarah Dotson, both of Sanford; John Lawson Jr. of Canada; Candy Lawson and Crystal Bethea, both of Broadway; Barbara Perez and William Lawson, both of Deep River; and Isidro Lopez of Lillington; her mother, Marian Laws of Lemon Springs; brother, Ronald Laws of Lemon Springs; and 16 grandchildren.
