ORIS “PRESTON” SPENCE
SANFORD — Oris “Preston” Spence, 70, died Monday, February 4, 2013 at his residence in Sanford, North Carolina.
Preston was a loving and devoted husband to his surviving wife, Betty Spence. He is also survived by his children, Renee Spence of Raleigh, N.C., Preston Spence Jr. and his wife Jessica of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and one sister, Brenda Heins of Gastonia, N.C.
Preston was heavily involved as an active member of the Sanford Lions Club of which he held several titles. He was also a member of Grace Chapel and a dedicated Christian.
Preston worked the majority of his career at Nortel Networks in Raleigh, N.C. He then followed with a career in real estate as an agent for Century 21 in Sanford, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Grace Chapel, 2601 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Sanford, N.C.

KENNETH L. COATS
LILLINGTON — Kenneth L. Coats, 51, died Tuesday (2/5/13) at Universal Health Care in Lillington.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Sawyer Coats. He worked as a farmer and also in commercial construction.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel with the Rev. Robbie O’Quinn officiating. Burial will follow at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Everette Coats Jr.
He is survived by his brother, Everette Coats Jr. of Linden; and father and stepmother, Everette Coats Sr. and Peggy of Florida.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1162, Lillington, N.C. 27546.

SANFORD — John H. Newby Jr., 61, of 500 Dudley St., died Tuesday (2/5/13) at his residence. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home.
MARY SPIVEY BROWN
SANFORD — Funeral service for Mary Spivey Brown, 88, who died Sunday (2/3/13), was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Arnold B. Lovell and the Rev. Craig J. Lister. A private committal preceded the service at Buffalo Cemetery.
During the service, the congregation sang. Organist\pianist was David Almond, soloist was Etta Love and “Time of Remembrance” was by Wayne Freeman.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Prinest M. James, 90, who died Wednesday (1/30/13), was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gerome Williams officiating. Burial was at Lee Memory Gardens.
Soloist was Lela Blue.
Pallbearers were friends of the family.

LINDEN — Virginia Lee Adams, 57, of Roper Road, died Monday (2/4/13) at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Elizabeth Street Mortuary Inc. in Spring Lake.
CYNTHIA RAE WHITTAKER
SANFORD — Cynthia (Cindy) Rae Whittaker, 54, of 1324 Brookhollow Road, died Wednesday (1/16/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Sally and Ken Van Sickle of Sanford; three children; one grandson; three sisters and one brother, all of New York.
A memorial service will be held in New York in June.

JAMES DANIEL 'J.D.' ASHWORTH
SANFORD — Funeral service for James Daniel “J.D.” Ashworth was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Woodside UMC in Mamers with the Rev. Michael Sadtler and the Rev. James Daniel officiating.
Two special songs were played. Pianist was Pat McKee and soloist was Gene McNeil.
Pallbearers were Sam Harrington, Mike Harrington, Roy Harrington, Jeff Harrington, David Taylor, Bill Taylor and Tony Sloan.
Following the funeral, a Service of Committal was held at Poplar Springs UMC Cemetery.
