OLIVIA — Laura Rebecca Hall Thomas, 78, died Thursday (2/7/13) at her home.

She was born in Lee County on Feb. 1, 1935, to the late Peter James Hall and Jennie Belle Cameron Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A.G. Thomas; a daughter, Brenda Thomas; and brothers, Franklin, Daniel James and John A. Hall.

She is survived by her son, Larry Thomas and wife Glenda of Olivia; three daughters, Bonnie Duggan and husband Paul, and Dale Spivey, all of Olivia, and Betsy Wells and husband Barney of Sanford; a brother, Paul Hall of Thomasville; two sisters, Annie Belle Holt of High Point and Shirley Reinert of Thomasville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Olivia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Walton presiding. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and other times at the family home. Burial will follow at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

PITTSBORO — William Joseph Davis, 64, died Tuesday (2/5/13) at UNC Hospital.

He was born March 20, 1948, to William and Bertha Casamento Davis in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Norwich, N.Y., and graduated from Norwich High School in the class of 1966. He worked for Pittsboro Waste Water Treatment Plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha; and sister, Alice Virginia.

He is survived by his two sons, Jason and wife Jennifer of North Prairie, Wis., and Ryan of Madison, Wis.; brothers, Bernard and wife Linda Davis of Vestal, N.Y., and John Davis of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and sisters, Mary and husband Don O’Hearn of Tampa, Fla., Barbara and husband Larry Dunning of Weedsport, N.Y., and Gloria and husband Chris Pricci of Sterling, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Visitation will follow the service.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Avery Jerome “A.J.” Garrell, 64, who died Monday (2/4/13), was conducted Wednesday at Grace Chapel Church with Dr. Rudy Holland, Pastor Tim Murr and Pastor Joel Murr officiating.

Pianist was Jennifer Murr. Soloist was Pastor Dave Cyphert, who sang two selections. A trio consisting of Pastor Tim Murr, Pastor Joel Murr and Pastor Dave Cyphert sang one selection.

Burial followed Thursday at Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington with Dr. Rudy Holland officiating. Soloist at the graveside was Tommy Matthews.

BEAR CREEK — Johnsie Brooks Elmore, 93, died Wednesday (2/6/13) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

She was born in Chatham County on April 6, 1919, the daughter of Herbert Lee and Laudis (Fox) Brooks. She was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the WMU. She was a cafeteria worker at Chatham Central High School and had been a cook at Harpers Crossroads Seafood Restaurant. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Hoyt Elmore; sons, Joseph D. Elmore and Bobby L. Elmore; her parents; brothers, Everette and Lendon Brooks; sisters, Martha Ann Moffitt and Mattie Lewis Beal.

She is survived by one son, Billy H. Elmore and wife Sara of Siler City; sisters, Bertha B. Dowd and Mary Kate B. Gunter, both of Siler City; brother, Howard Brooks of Siler City; daughter-in-law, Joyce Hash Elmore of Bear Creek; seven grandsons; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church. The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Wachs and the Rev. Troy Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

SOUTHERN PINES — Theodore Marley, 91, died Saturday (2/2/13) at Magnolia Garden in Southern Pines.

CARTHAGE — Roger Ervin “Buddy” Williamson, 71, died Tuesday (2/5/13) at his home.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Scott McInnis officiating.

He was born in Carthage on Jan. 5, 1942, to Herbert Brooks and Myrtle Hardister Williamson. He was a self-employed painter and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Brooks and Myrtle Hardister Williamson; his wife, Sylvia Maddox Williamson; and one daughter, Martha Ann Williamson.

He is survived by three children, Anquinetta Wilkes and husband James of Candor, Scott Williamson and wife Jannie, and Ronda Taylor and husband Danny, all of Carthage; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

SANFORD — James Vincent Walpole, 80, died Wednesday (2/6/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

SANFORD — Elder Marjorie B. McDonald, 69, formerly of Rockingham, died Saturday (2/2/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kings Gate Church International in Hamlet. Burial will follow at Mary Love Cemetery in Hamlet.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle Hill and Willie Bennett; a daughter, Lorraine McDonald; and two brothers, Romeo Jones and Terry Bennett.

She is survived by three daughters, Sonya J. Howard, Dorethea McDonald and Andra' Douglas; and three brothers, Willie Bennett, Travis Bennett and Tim Bennett.

Public viewing will be held today from 1 until 6 p.m. and Wake from 7 until 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Rockingham and family will also receive friends at 368 Wiregrass Road, Hamlet.

LAKEVIEW — Ted Chavis, 70, died Monday (2/4/13) at his home.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with William Rost officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home and other times at his home, 110 Texas Lane, Lakeview.

He was born in Robeson County on June 7, 1942, to Cloyd and Sarah Locklear Chavis. He was a self-employed tile craftsman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cloyd and Sarah Locklear Chavis; one sister, Annie Sue Sleigh; and three brothers, Billy Chavis, Junior Chavis and Mitchell Chavis.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Jackie Chavis; three children, Anne Rost and husband William of Georgia, Chris Chavis-Yarborough and husband Travis of Vass, and Jason Chavis of Lakeview; two sisters, Louise Hammond of Virginia and Mattie Pearl Oxendine of Aberdeen; three brothers, Bracey Chavis of Vass, Harold Chavis of Cameron and Bobby Chavis of California; and three grandchildren.
