JOSEPH ALBERT BROWN

SANFORD — Joseph Albert Brown, 93, died Friday, December 21, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Lee County, the son of the late Grover N. Brown and Maggie Smith Brown. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Louise Brown; a son, Charles Arthur Brown; brothers, Grover N. Brown Jr. and Garland Brown; special cousin, June Brown; and son-in-law, Robert L. Melton.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Druckemiller Brown; a son, John Brown and wife Donna of Cameron; daughter, Linda Schmehl and husband Paul of Richardson, Texas, Debra Louise Brown and Patricia Melton, both of Sanford, and Joyce Brown of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012 at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 at Rogers Memorial Chapel officiated by Pastor Bob Schwartz and Pastor Scott Yow. Soloist was Scott Yow. Pianist was Suzanne McDonald.

Pallbearers were Joe Brown, Johnathan Melton, David Melton, Jason Brown, Jacob Brown and Michael Stephens.

Arrangements were by Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

TREVA GAIL BATCHELOR BRADY

SANFORD — Treva Gail Batchelor Brady, 68, died Thursday (1/3/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Lee County on Oct. 12, 1944, to the late Ocie Batchelor and Bessie Petty Batchelor. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Gene Brady; two daughters, Sandy Gail Inscoe and husband James, and Wendy Brady Broeker, all of Sanford; two brothers, Bobby Lee Batchelor and wife Lynda, and Donnie Batchelor and wife Mary, all of Sanford; two sisters, Elizabeth Faye West and Karen Ashworth, both of Sanford; and three grandchildren.

Funeral will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Turner's Chapel Church with the Rev. Bruce MacInnes presiding. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at Turner's Chapel Church. Burial will follow at Cool Springs Baptist Church.

JAMES ARTHUR BYRD WILLIAMS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — James Arthur Byrd Williams, 77, died Sunday (12/30/12) at Briarwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis.

He was born on July 25, 1935, in Wadesboro to Ishmael and Lena Mae Byrd. He was raised by his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Williams. He grew up in North Carolina where he attended Lee County Training School.

He is survived by his children, Janice Williams, Robert Williams (Kimberly Williams), Glenda Williams, Minister Vennessa McLaughlin (Rev. Walter McLaughlin III), Minister James Williams II (DeLisa Williams) and Lewis Williams; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Grundy Memorial Chapel in Indianapolis, Ind.

HOMER PHILLIPS

BEAR CREEK — Homer Phillips, 84, of 13974 Hwy 902, died Monday (12/31/12) at Siler City Center in Siler City.

Funeral service will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

He was a Chatham County native and was a retired truck driver. He had served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by daughters, Elaine Wilhelm of Statesville, Tammy Stewart of Bear Creek and Dawn Kelly of Italy; sisters, Betty Carter and Doris DiMeo, both of Siler City, and Peggy Brooks of Bear Creek; brothers, William “Shug” Phillips and Lawrence James Phillips, both of Bear Creek, and Harlan “Pig” Phillips of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

DAVIS BRYANT COLLINS

SANFORD — Funeral service for Davis Bryant Collins, 88, who died Monday (12/31/12), was held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Edgewood Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Hayes and Jody McNeill officiating. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

Pianists were Eugenia Thompson and Stephanie McRae; organist was Wilson Weathers and soloist was Nelson Currin. The Edgewood Presbyterian Church choir also sang one hymn.

Active pallbearers were Jimmy Thomas, Timmy Currin, Chris McRae, Tommy McRae, James Currin and Robbie Currin. Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Currin, Royce Davis, Gilbert Currin and Lin Thomas.

WILLIE BLUE JR.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Willie Blue Jr., 71, who died Saturday (12/29/12), was held Friday at 1 p.m. at New Endland AME Zion Church with the Rev. Clinton W. Edwards officiating. Burial was at Lee Memory Gardens.

The House of Prayer and Deliverance Choir sang with Robert Woods as soloist.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

ADRIAN LUTHER BENEDICT

SANFORD — Funeral service for Adrian Luther Benedict, who died Monday (12/31/12), was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Jeff Clark and the Rev. Russ Ward. Burial followed at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

During the service, the organist was Patricia Langston and special music was by Natalie Sleeth.

Pallbearers were Eddie Arnold, Mitchell Arnold, Raymond Arnold, Bill Page, Phillip Page and Ronnie Page.

WILLARD EDWARD DUNN

BEAR CREEK — Willard Edward Dunn, 80, of 6010 Bonlee Bennett Road, died Friday (1/4/13) at the home of his daughter.

Graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Oakley Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a Chatham County native and built chairs at Boling Chair Co. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Edward Thomas.

He is survived by daughter, June Bray and husband Bobby of Bear Creek; son, Willam Earl Thomas of Pittsboro; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Clarence Dunn of Moncure, Roland Dunn of Sanford and Buck Dunn of Goldston; and sisters, Linda Alnupt of Cameron and Bonnie Cashwell of Clinton.

Visitation will be held today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett and other times at 229 Henry Bray Road.

SYBIL YOPP PILSON

SANFORD — Sybil Yopp Pilson, 84, of Cameron died Thursday (1/3/13) at her home.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rocky Fork Christian Church.

She was born in New Hanover County, daughter of the late Samuel Freeman Yopp and Ruth Powers Yopp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee A. Pilson Sr.; a grandson, Lee A. “Sandy” Pilson III; and sisters, Theo, Jean, Rae and Ada.

She is survived by her children, Carolyn Vochatzer and husband Jerry of Independence, Mo., Wanda Cameron and husband Larry, Lee A. Pilson Jr., Chester Pilson and wife Kathy, and Samuel Freeman Pilson, all of Cameron, and Milton Pilson and wife Karen of Carthage; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall at Rocky Fork Christian Church.

MYRA JEAN MORGAN THOMPSON

SMITHFIELD — Myra Jean Morgan Thompson, 85, died Thursday (1/3/13) in Johnston Medical Center.

Born Jan. 2, 1928 in Johnston County, she was a daughter of the late Adron Harold and Vara Barefoot Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lester Thompson; brothers, Hooper Morgan; sisters, Lois Overby and Cora Lea Morgan; and an infant great-granddaughter. She was a long time member of Old Union Primitive Baptist Church and was a charter member of the Pine Level American Legion Post 405 Auxiliary.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Old Union Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Bobby Daughtry officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Parrish Funeral Home.

She is survived by her son, Mel Thompson and wife Cathy of Smithfield; daughters, Quinlan T. Harward and husband Tommy of Sanford, and Lisa T. Peedin and husband Tony of Pine Level; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
