SANFORD — Jacques Lyman Miller, 76, of Sanford passed away on November 22, 2013 at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital.

He was born on December 12, 1936 in Wiconisco, Pennsylvania to the late George and Grace Miller.

Mr. Miller was a 1954 high school graduate of Wiconisco, PA. He went on to receive his Bachelors in Business and Management at the University of Maryland and his Masters in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University. Jacques was a Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired). He was a ground Unit Supply Operations Officer (3010-Limited Duty Officer). He was assigned as the Head of Enlisted Recruiting and Head of the Contact Assistance Team of the 4th Marine Corps District, then located in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

He was a member of many organizations throughout the years including: The Marine Corps Assn., Life Member of the Military Officers Assn., and Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps League, West Chester, PA Detachment, The Marine Corps Mustangs Assn. and Life Member of the Viet Nam Chapter of the Marine Corps Tankers Assn. He was also a full golf member of the Carolina Trace Country Club and was serving on the Board of Governors.

Jacques' career as a Marine also included being the Naval Science Instructor for the Navy Junior ROTC at Passiac, N.J. High School in 1983. He went on to become the Senior Marine Instructor, Marine Corps Junior ROTC Sun Valley High School in Aston, PA in 1983 until his retirement June 30, 1996. After his military career Jacques continued serving others. He taught in the Business Department of Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC teaching Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer sessions at all four campuses. He was a substitute teacher at Lee County Senior High School from 1997-1998.

He was an avid golfer with 4 holes in one to his credit; 3 at Carolina Trace Country Club and 1 at the Golf Club at Longleaf in Southern Pines. He was also a faithful member of the St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford and a member of the Wednesday morning Prayer Breakfast sponsored by St. Luke.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Miller of the home; one daughter, Lisa Wagner and her husband Thomas of Downingtown, PA; two sons, Jeffrey Miller and his wife Luladey of Leesburg, VA and Stephen Miller and his wife Beth of Dover, DE; three sisters, Marilyn Murray and her husband Bob of Washington Crossing, PA, JoAnn Klinger and her husband Don of Hyattsville, MD and Mary Maiden and her late husband Jay of Halifax, PA; also survived by 10 grandchildren, Stephen, Jacqui, Tori, Matt, Kurt, Davis, Lucas, Annabelle, Gabe and Sarah.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford. The family will have visitation at the church from 12:30-1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

SANFORD — Anthony “Andy” Wayne Giles, Sr., 45, of Sanford passed away suddenly on November 22, 2013.

He was born on September 22, 1968 in Harnett County, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Stevens Giles; three children, Joshua Deven Giles and his wife Amber of Sanford, Ashley Nicole Giles and Anthony Wayne Giles, Jr., both of the home; father, Wilton Wayne Giles, Jr. and his wife Cathy; brothers, Johnny Wayne Giles of Greensboro, N.C. and Philip Giles of Sanford; paternal grandmother, Helen Cummings Giles; one grandchild, Makayla Grace Giles; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lynne and James Stevens.

Andy was predeceased by his mother, Peggy Fraley McLeod and stepfather, Frank Edison McLeod.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to PNC Bank in Andy's name.

CAMERON — Mary Buie Scriven, 55, 105 Hannah Lori Drive, died Sunday (11/24/13) at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home.


SILER CITY — Terry Heaton Bowman, 55, of 395 Bradford Lane, died Saturday (11/23/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She was a native of Moore County, and daughter of the late Bobby Wayne Heaton Sr. and Linda Brown Heaton. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Jeremy Martindale. She was self-employed and had her own cleaning business.

Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Carbonton United Methodist Church in Goldston with Rev. Billy Joe Brady officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She is survived by her daughters, Megan Oldham of Goldston, Lindsay Oldham of Siler City, and Kelly Kontos and her husband Johnny of Greensboro; sister, Mary “Chris” Everwine and husband David of Siler City; brothers, Bobby Wayne Heaton Jr. of Asheboro, and Jeff Lautzenheiser and wife Diane of Braselton, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett and at the other times at her home.

CAMERON — Funeral service for Clyde Wayne Johnson, 74, who died Tuesday (11/19/13), was held at 12 p.m. Monday at Church of God In Christ Jesus in Cameron with Pastor Christopher Brown and Apostle Dr. Marvin Smith officiating. Burial was at the Chatman Cemetery.

The church choir sang.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

BEAR CREEK — Funeral service for Johnnie Peoples, 90, who died Wednesday (11/20/13), was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Grove AME Zion Church with the Rev. Reginald Boyd officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Soloists were Kay Carter and Florence Chesney.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

GREENSBORO — Funeral service for Hervis Leak, 74, who died Tuesday (11/19/13), was held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jonesboro Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Leo McKoy officiating. Burial was at the Lee Memory Gardens.

Soloists were Christopher Sutton and Albert Everette.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Edith Mason Brownlee was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Spring Hill United Methodist Church in Lillington with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Johnnie Holder played piano. Special music was sung by Justin Harrington and Angie Evans. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brandon Hardy, Richard Leslie, Glenn Locklear, Thomas Holmes, Eduardo De La Cruz and Austin Byrd.
