KAREN ANNE WILLIAMS LEONARD

SANFORD — Mrs. Karen Anne Williams Leonard, age 61, of Sanford, N.C., died Sunday, April 7, 2013, at her home.

She was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 11, 1951, to the late Garnett Lee Williams and Doris Anne Ford Williams.

She is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Martin Leonard of the home; three daughters, Kenna Leonard Wilson and husband Joe of Sanford, Kara Leonard Lee and husband Charles of Plano, Texas, and Emily Leonard Hudnall and husband Matthew also of Plano, Texas; three brothers and a sister, all of Gainesville, FL: Michael “Mike” Williams, Dennis “Chip” Williams and wife Mary Ann, Thomas “Tom” Williams, Donna Murray and husband Wayne; and five grandsons Avery, John Tyler, Colton, Lukas, Isaac and eight nieces and nephews.

Karen grew up in Tarpon Springs, Florida. That is where she met her husband Robert. Karen was married to Robert on August 30, 1970. Karen was devoted to her family. She spent her entire working career working with children. Karen and Robert moved to Sanford, NC in 1992. She began working as a substitute teacher for Lee County Schools and worked as an instructional assistant at J. Glenn Edwards Elementary, and as a tutor at J.R. Ingram Elementary. Throughout her career, she worked closely with children with disabilities. She loved working with children and they loved her back. Karen retired from Lee County Schools in April 2012.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 12, 2013, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The family will receive friends, following the memorial service, at the family home, 2418 Overbrook Lane, Sanford.

ARTHUR DULA CARSWELL JR. (vet)

HOPE MILLS — Arthur Dula Carswell Jr., 87 years old, died Friday, April 5, 2013 in Fayetteville. NC.

He was born in Raeford, N.C. to the late Rev. and Mrs. A.D. Carswell Sr. He graduated from Sanford High School and attended Campbell College and Florida Southern University. He served in the U.S. Army and later was called up from the U.S. Naval Reserve. He served as chief inspector for Fasco Corporation for many years. He was a life-long Presbyterian.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Madeline Carswell, Mary Thomas Carswell and Judy Carswell Avent.

He is survived by a brother, John W. Carswell (Betty) of Ashland, VA; and two sisters, Jill Carswell Wallof (Hal) of Providence Forge, VA., and Jane Carswell Roberts (Kenneth) of Lenoir, NC.

Funeral services will be held April 10 at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills, NC at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the cemetery of the Church of the Covenant in Spring Lake, NC. Officiating will be Rev. Kenneth Williams. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to a favorite charity.

CARTHAGE — Brandon Person, 32, died Sunday (4/7/13) at Kingswood Nursing Facility in Aberdeen.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pugh & Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Person; father, Rodney Robinson; brother, Patrick Person; sister, Pennetta Thomas; and grandmother, Mae Person.

ROBERT HARTSELL HENDRICK

CARTHAGE — Robert Hartsell Hendrick, 85, died Tuesday (4/9/13) at his residence.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cameron Baptist Church with Dr. Wayne Greene, Dr. Joe R. Babb and the Rev. Ray Whitby Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cameron Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

A native of Moore County, he was the son of the late Wallace Hartsell Hendrick and Lula Elizabeth Doss Hendrick. He was a member of Cameron Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a tobacco farmer and worked many years with the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service and was a director with Moore County Farm Bureau. He was preceded in death by a son, Marty Hartsell Hendrick, and sisters, Irene, Doris, Clara Jo and Marie.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lula Mae Denny Hendrick; two daughters, Dr. Pamela Jessup and husband James of Sanford, and Lisa Dunlap and husband James of Westmore; a son, Denny Hendrick and wife Julie of Seven Lakes; a sister, Valeria Maples and husband Phil of Spring Lake; a brother, Lonnie Hendrick and wife Ruby of Cameron; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

JOHNNY E. BROWER

CARTHAGE — Johnny E. Brower died Friday (4/5/13).

A native of Randolph County, he was a son of the late Jimmy Ray Brower and Ester Brower. He was a fieldmaster and scout and won many awards for his hard work and dedication to the Field Trial Society of America.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. today at Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins with the Rev. Ben Hurley and the Rev. Archie Stevens officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.

He is survived by one daughter, Kristen Nacole Brower and her husband Curtis Mitchell Thomas of West End; three grandchildren; and brothers, Jimmy Ray Brower of Seagrove and Greg Brower of Eagle Springs.

SANFORD — Deiyani JiKai James Ligon, 1, of 225 Little River Lane, son of Shone LaRhea Williams and Darnell James Ligon, died Thursday (4/4/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

MONCURE — Joseph “Joe” Frank Matarazzo, 60, died Wednesday (4/3/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 28, 1952, son of Joseph Frank Matarazzo and Juanita Carter Matarazzo. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Joseph “Big Joe” Robert Matarazzo.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon R. Matarazzo; one daughter, Anita M. Matarazzo of Sanford; one grandson; one niece and a great-niece.

SANFORD — John William “Johnny” Jones, 68, died Monday (4/8/13).

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange.

He was born in Wayne County, a son of the late John William Jones Sr. and Maggie Belle Tillman Jones Lankford. He was preceded in death by two brothers, David Bruce Jones and William Earl Jones.

He is survived by one sister, Helen Ruth Jones Casey and husband Edward, of Sanford; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Asheboro, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Hogan and Lula Cagle Hogan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pascal Douglas “PD” Yow, and three brothers, Clinton Hogan, Harold Hogan and Earl Hogan.

She is survived by two daughters, Diana Yow Roth and husband David of Alexandria, Va., and Sharon Yow Carney and husband Craig of Woodbridge, Va.; one son, Alan Yow and wife Linda of Cameron; one sister, Elta Hogan of Asheboro; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
