SARA SWARTZ COHEN

SANFORD — Sara Swartz “Sissy” Cohen, 77, of Sanford died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at her home.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Sunday, August 24 at Buffalo Cemetery.

Mrs. Cohen was born in Winston-Salem, a daughter of the late Celia Feinstein Swartz and Samuel Swartz. Sissy served the Sanford-Lee County community in many capacities including the Lee County Board of Education, Lee County Group Home, San-Lee Humane Society, and Chicora Literary Club. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Martin A. Davis; her brother, Edwin H. Swartz, and a special aunt, Minnie Feinstein.

Mrs. Cohen is survived by her husband, Leopold I. “Poly” Cohen; daughters, Robyn C. Carpenter and husband Scott of Sanford, and Sharon C. Davis of Sanford; a son, Stephen Cohen of Sanford; sister, Susan S. Blumberg and husband Leslie of Dothan, AL; grandchildren, Celia C. Everett and husband Scott, Jonathan Carpenter, Sarah Perry and Julie Davis; a great-grandson, Brady Everett; and her special caregivers, Anna Monteroso, Diana Rojas and Ella Smith.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

BROADWAY — Alvin McDougal, 79, of 714 Burgess Circle, Broadway, died Friday (8/22/14) at his home. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home.

BEAR CREEK — Funeral service for Emma Dean Pugh, 78, who died Monday (8/18/14), was conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Union Grove AME Zion Church in Bear Creek with the Rev. Dr. Reginald Boyd Jr. officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

The Union Grove Mass Choir sang and soloist was Mildred Brooks.

Pallbearers were relatives and friends.

Arrangements were by Knotts Funeral Home.

DARLENE BLACKWELL

SANFORD — Funeral service for Darlene Blackwell, 58, who died Wednesday (8/13/14), was conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Knotts Funeral Home with Minister Ren Harris officiating. Burial was at Minter/Alston Cemetery.

Soloists were Nikka Harris and Wanda Beasley.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

Arrangements were by Knotts Funeral Home.

HAROLD E. MARKS

CAMERON — Harold E. Marks, 69, of Cameron, died Thursday (8/21/14) at his home.

He was born in Hoke County on March 4, 1945, to the late Norman C. Marks and Ida West Marks. He was preceded in death by sisters, Nancy Simpson and Mildred Douglas. He was a farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Jones Marks; a daughter, Carol Doby and husband Donny of Cameron; three sons, Darryl Marks and wife Angie of Claremont, Wayne Marks and wife Natalie of Roper, and Charles Marks and wife Angie of Cameron; two brothers, Clarence Marks and Dewitt Marks, both of Cameron; sisters, Louine Becker of Fayetteville, Glenda Tucker of Seven Lakes and Bonnie Lyczkowski of Cameron; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church in Vass.

Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church with the Rev. Brian Teeter officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

OMIE L. BAKER HESTER

NEWARK, N.J. — Omie L. Baker Hester of Newark, N.J., formerly of Sanford, died Sunday (8/10/14).

She is survived by her husband, Lacy Hester; daughter, Carla Garcia; sons, Michael Hester and Jonathan Hester; son-in-law, James Garcia; sisters, Kathleen of New Jersey, Annie Ruth and Sylvia, both of Sanford; and two grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service was held at Hollywood Cemetery in Union, N.J.

Services were handled by Perry Funeral Home in Newark, N.J.
