JEANNIE RIDDLE MOODY

SILER CITY — Jeannie Riddle Moody, 62, died Thursday (10/10/13) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

She was born in Durham County on March 5, 1951, the daughter of John and Emily (Bullock) Riddle. She attended Edward Hill Friends Meeting and was a licensed practical nurse. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Alice Connor.

She is survived by her husband, Monte Moody; daughter Marci Moody of Silk Hope; son Andy Moody of Carthage; and sister Edna McNeill of Pittsboro.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel in Siler City with the Rev. Bob Wachs officiating.

RUTH GERTRUDE SETCHELL COOK

SOUTHERN PINES — Ruth Gertrude Setchell Cook, 98, died Saturday (10/12/13) at Penick Village of Southern Pines.

She was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Sept. 9, 1915, to Martin Oliver and Gertrude Wiener Setchell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Alva Cook; two sons, Lawrence Jay Cook and John Ross Cook; two sisters, Ida May Corner and Ethel May Hanson; one brother, Robert Martin Setchell; and one grandchild.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Cook Leggett and her husband Stephen of Pinehurst; a daughter-in-law, Gerda Cook Gorman of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Penick Village Foundation, 500 E. Rhode Island Ave., Southern Pines, N.C., or www.penickvillage.org. Memorials may also be made to Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 330 S. May St., Southern Pines, N.C. 28388.

A memorial service is planned for Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church with Karen Allen officiating.

HAROLD C. SAWYER

SANFORD — Graveside service for Harold C. Sawyer, who died Saturday (10/12/13), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Carbonton United Methodist Church cemetery.

During the service, words of comfort and remembrance were spoken by sons Randy and Steve Sawyer. Eulogies were also given by members of the congregation. The duet of guitarist Jonathan Sawyer and Rachel Sawyer sang, and the trio of sons Randy, Steve and Tom Sawyer led the congregation in a medley of hymns.

Pallbearers were Billy Burgess, Allen Hardy, Matthew Holliday, Aaron Sawyer, Jonathan Sawyer and Lawton Sawyer.

SANFORD — Funeral service for John Edward “Johnny” Thomas, 73, who died Wednesday (10/9/13), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sandy Williams officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Joey Holmes and organist was Dorothy Hales. The congregation sang two selections. Special music was a duet by Bryan Shaw and Tracy Thomas with both on guitars.

Pallbearers were Chris Spivey, Sandy Spivey, Frankie Spivey, Rod Spivey, Paul Thomas and Mike Yarborough.

SOUTHERN PINES — Milton Ratcliff, 53, died Tuesday (10/15/13) at his residence. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Pugh & Smith Funeral Home of Carthage.

FAYETTEVILLE — Sharon Wess, 57, died Thursday (10/10/13).

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Richard T. Lewis, and brother, Anthony B. Jackson.

She is survived by her mother, Bonnie Lewis; one son, Marcus Wess (Sarah); one grandchild; a sister, Gwendolyn Nelson (Craig); and brothers, Terry Jackson, Darrell Lewis (Cecilia), Kevin Lewis and Jimmy Lewis.

Visitation will be held Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Colvin Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Beauty Spot Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

BROADWAY — Graveside service for Joffre Lance Johnson Jr., 69, who died Friday (10/11/13), was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Broadway Town Cemetery with the Rev. Elton Bryan officiating.

During the service, Caroline Garner was the soloist.

Pallbearers were Lonnie Johnson Jr., Clinton Johnson, Ray Haire, Larry Haire, Franklin Pattishall and Tony Hockaday.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Payne and Adam Johnson.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Adelaide J. Gerry was held Tuesday at Lamms Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Carthage with Elder Carlton Brown officiating. Two songs were sung by the congregation. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were CB Jackson, Will Jackson, Matthew Hardy, Ben Holt, Nathan Holt and Sam Holt.
