MEADER WILLIAMS HARRISS JR.
TARBORO — Meader Williams “Red” Harriss Jr. passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013 at his residence in Tarboro, N.C.
He was the son of the late Meader Williams Harriss and Beulah Goldston Harriss of Sanford, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Blanna Brower Harriss; an infant son, John Gregory Harriss, and a sister, Lillian Harriss.
He attended Duke University and was a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. During World War II, he served as an Intelligence Officer and later was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After leaving the Army, his entire career was spent in banking in Sanford and Lumberton, N.C. He served as Executive Vice President and Board Member of the National Bank of Sanford and later as Senior Vice-President, Corporate Secretary and Member of the Board of Southern National Bank.
He was active in community affairs in Sanford and Lumberton. Among these activities, he served on the Sanford City School Board. An avid reader, he was a founding Board Member of the Friends of the Lee County Library. He was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church of Sanford and Chestnut Street United Methodist Church of Lumberton serving on the Finance Committee and Administrative Boards of both churches. A particular love of his was teaching Sunday School to high school students. In retirement, he and Blanna were active volunteers with Central Carolina Hospital Auxiliary and the American Red Cross. After their move to Tarboro, N.C. in 2002, they became members of First United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount where he was a weekly office volunteer.
Mr. Harriss is survived by his son, W. Lee Harriss and wife Sylvia of Rocky Mount; his daughter, Dr. K Michie Harriss Dew and husband, the Rev. Frank Dew, of Greensboro; and four grandchildren: M. Cooper Harriss and wife Sarah of Pittsburgh, PA, Meader W. Harriss, III and wife Jennifer of Edenton, David Dew of Greensboro and Christie Dew Hartman and husband Adam of New Albany, OH. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Eva, Vivian and O.R. Harriss, and a sister Dorothy H. Harriss of Hope Mills.
The family greatly appreciates the support of the Fountains of the Albemarle community and staff for their excellent care and genuine affection for our parents.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 26, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of First United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford. Both services will be conducted by his son-in-law, Rev. Frank Dew, and Rev. Tom Greener. The family will receive guests following each service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount, the Harriss Youth House at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford, or New Creation Community Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.

JOHN CALVIN BOWERS
SILER CITY — John Calvin "JC" Bowers, 79, of Silk Hope-Gum Springs Road, died Tuesday (10/22/13) at his residence.
He was born in Chatham County on July 27, 1934, the son of Wiley and Eva (Thompson) Bowers. He was a member of Hickory Mountain United Methodist Church, an Army veteran and retired as a route salesman with Reidsville Grocery. He was a NASCAR fan, enjoyed minor league baseball and had pitched for the Durham Bulls. He was preceded in death by sons, Gregory and Richard Bowers; his parents; and brother, Ralph Bowers.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Estelle (Shuskey) Bowers; stepson, Jimmy Marshall of Siler City; stepdaughters, Joanie Marshall of Siler City and Phoebe Marshall of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Thornburg of Siler City, Maxine Tillman of Goldston and Betty Jean Bowers of Bear Creek, and brother, Sherman Bowers of Siler City.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hickory Mountain United Methodist Church in Pittsboro with the Rev. Mary Ellen Bender officiating.

THELMA WITHERS SLIGH
BROADWAY — Thelma Withers Sligh, 91, died Wednesday (10/23/13) at her home.
She was born in Harnett County, the daughter of the late James Adkins and Martha Jane Holder Withers. She retired as a nurse after many years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Sligh; brothers, Leroy Withers, Levy Withers, McBryde Withers and James Withers; and sisters, Ilean O’Quinn and Vernelle Sloan. She was a member of Leaflet Presbyterian Church in Broadway.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Leaflet Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tom Spence officiating. A graveside service will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville, S.C., with Edward “Pee Wee” Taylor officiating.
She is survived by her brothers, Jerry Withers of Broadway and Foster Withers of Lillington, and numerous nieces and nephews.

SPRING LAKE — Gilmore Jordan, 70, died Wednesday (10/23/13) at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville.
He was the son of the late Oliver and Lina Mae Jones Jordan.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Johnsonville AME Zion Church in Cameron.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie J. Jordan; one daughter, Theresa Jordan of Cameron; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mattie Jordan Williams and Everea Jordan Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
