LEMON SPRINGS – Former Lee County Register of Deeds Pattie Wilson McGilvary died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

She was born March 10, 1916 in Willow Springs, N.C., the daughter of Ernest and Bertha Parrish Wilson. After the family moved to Lemon Springs, she graduated from Greenwood High School and later from Hardbarger’s Business College.

She was appointed Lee County Register of Deeds in 1972 and was later elected for three terms, serving for 12 years, the first woman to be elected as a Register of Deeds in the State of North Carolina. Prior to working with the county, she worked for 12 years with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office.

Very active at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, she was the first woman to be elected as an Elder and received the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership in 1995. She was also a Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years and served as treasurer and a trustee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester M. McGilvary; her parents; brother, James; and sister, Edith Matthews.

She is survived by her children, Gayle M. and William Matthews of Lemon Springs and Susan M. and Ed Livesay of Sanford; and grandchildren, Joseph Matthews of Abingdon, Va., and Connor and Savannah Livesay of Sanford. She is also survived by her sister, Louise Ray of Sanford; nephew, Bill Ray Jr., of Sanford; and nieces, Betty Matthews of Durham, Jean Watkins of Siler City and Candace Davis of Lemon Springs.

The family wishes to thank two special caregivers, Traci and Barbara Dodson, for their love and care which allowed her to remain independent and at home.

The family will receive friends at the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening and other times at the family home.

Funeral services will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 5422 St. Andrews Church Rd., Sanford, NC 27332.

SANFORD — Mr. Telford Mark Fitzpatrick, age 55, of Sanford, NC, died Sunday, December 16, 2012 at his home.

He was born in Mecklenburg County, NC on February 26, 1957 to the late Donald Ralph Fitzpatrick and Betty Ann Borders Fitzpatrick. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Travis Michael Fitzpatrick. Mark was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and worked in commercial construction. He worked many years for Sanford Contractors. He was an avid car enthusiast and was a race engine builder. He was a devoted father and grandfather.

Mark is survived by two daughters, Brandy Layne Nordan and husband Rodney of Broadway, and Caroline Ruth Papageorgiou and husband Dean of Holly Springs, NC; two brothers, Donald Stephen Fitzpatrick of Raleigh, and Daniel Young Fitzpatrick and wife Denette of Sanford; two sisters, Sandra Dianne Bullard and husband Arthur of Sanford, and Pamela F. Gunter and husband Randy of Sanford; two grandchildren, Rebecca and Perry Nordan and his special friend and companion, Sherry Thomas.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 18, 2012 from 6-8 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and the funeral will be Wednesday, December 19th at 2:00 PM at Cool Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Ira Sutton and Rev. Matt Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

LILLINGTON — Allen J. Matthews, 78, died Saturday (12/15/12) at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn.

A native of Harnett County, he was the son of the late Junie and Effie Vaughn Matthews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Wimberly and Mozelle McLaughlin; and a brother, C.T. Matthews. He retired from Modern Lightening Protection Company after over 55 years of service to the company.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Baker Matthews; two sons, Jeffrey Matthews and James “Skeeter” Matthews and wife Denise, all of Lillington; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Margie Ammons and Mildred Bradshaw, both of Coats; brothers, Billy Ray Matthews of Lillington, Cliff Matthews of Coats and Joe Matthews of Erwin.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Grady Truitt Mason, 78, who died Wednesday (12/12/12), was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sanford Church of God with the Rev. David Kimbrell officiating. Burial followed at Spring Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lillington.

Millie Johnson and Bonnie White sang two duets with recorded music. Tim Preble was the sound tech, Britton Altman was the pianist and Anita Leggett was the organist. A nephew, Philip Iannarone, conducted the graveside committal service. Military honors were rendered. Eulogy was given by Libby Dew.

Pallbearers were John Sherbitsky, Philip Iannarone, Charlie Dew, Bruce Mason, Steven Smith and Tim Herring.

SANFORD — Donna Hall Kelly, 51, died Sunday (12/16/12) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

She was born in Lee County on Sept. 25, 1961, to Gladys Carter Hall of Sanford and the late Joseph Hall. She worked for Performance Fibers.

LILLINGTON — Clifford L. “Jack” Wade, 91, died Sunday (12/16/12) at E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.

A native of Harnett County, he was the son of the late Malcolm Bright and Lula Mae Morrison Wade. He was preceded in death by his wife, Effie Spivey Wade, and a daughter, Phyllis Gwartney. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army,  serving in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. Following his service in the Armed Services, he farmed and worked with the N.C. Department of Transportation, retiring after 20 years of service.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Spring Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

CLINTON — Audrey Wilson Hartsoe, 83, of 24 Scott Place, died Sunday (12/16/12) at Sampson Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Trenton on April 28, 1929, to Barney James and Etta Dale Chadwick Wilson. She and her husband, James Hartsoe, founded Hartsoe Printing Company, which remained a prominent business in Clinton for nearly 40 years. She was an active member of The Gulls, which was a support group for families affected by alcoholism. She was a member of Colonial Heights Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Barney James and Etta Dale Chadwick Wilson; her husband, James J. Hartsoe; two daughters, Angela Hartsoe Matthis and Bonny Dale Hartsoe; one sister, Etta Wilson Connelly; and four brothers, James, Robert, Gerald and William Wilson.

She is survived by three granddaughters; one grandson; one great-grandson; four sisters, Lucy W. Collier, Jewel W. Rylas, Jean W. Pugh and Polly W. Hope; and one brother, Charles Roger Wilson.
