BROADWAY — Ruth Copeland Williams, age 90, of Broadway, died Monday (6/9/14) at Life Care Center in Banner Elk, N.C.

She was born in Harnett County, daughter of the late Archie Oscar Copeland and Mattie Lee Kelly Copeland. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Jessie Copeland Hunter and Sarah Copeland Mansfield; and her husband, Willie Barden Williams.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway with the Rev. Garland Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Surviving are her daughter, Diane Williams and her husband Jerry Taylor of Vilas, N.C.; grandchildren, Robin Greene (David) and Susan Tate (Dave Freireich); great-grandchildren, Tori Greene, Holly Greene, Lila Freireich and Henry Freireich; two special nieces, Cathy Thomas and Janet Harrington, both of Broadway.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway, one hour prior to the funeral service and other times at the family home, 618 South Main Street, Broadway.

SANFORD — James Lee Reeder, 76, of Bermuda Run, died Monday, June 9, 2014.

Born in Rock Island, IL, he was the son of Ralph and Eva Reeder. He was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, served in the Illinois National Guard, was deeply involved in the insurance industry, retiring as a vice-president of the Andover Companies of Massachusetts. He held many positions in organizations and received the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter and Certified Insurance Counselor designations and was a Realtor and Securities Representative. He served as president of several insurance organizations. An avid golfer, he still found time to remodel 28 houses and provide help to Carolina Trace County Club as a Board member and to Carolina Trace Association as a representative for his neighborhood.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy; sons, Steven and wife Michelle, Jeffrey and wife Elaine; and his brother, Don. Grandchildren Andrew and Natalie Reeder and Amanda and Marc Reeder were his pride and joy.

A memorial service will be held at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church (8533 Cox Mill Road, Sanford) at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 13, followed by a reception at Carolina Trace Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Morris Chapel United Methodist Church or the Carolina Trace Commemorative Fund.

SANFORD — Rachel Elizabeth Morrison McCauley of Sanford, N.C. went to her eternal home on June 7, 2014.

She was born February 28, 1930 in Mamers, N.C. to the late Annie Laurie Morrison Page. She was a graduate of Boone Trail High School. She worked for many years as a book keeper for Mack's #1 and Kendale Pawn Shop. She loved to read and converse on any subject. She was a people person.

She was married to the late William Arnold McCauley in 1960 and began a family with Max McCauley of Mamers, N.C., Tommy McCauley of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., and Phyllis Thomas of Cameron, N.C. They gave her 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She loved and lived for her family. She was blessed with two daughters, both of Sanford, N.C., Laurie McCauley Holland (Ray) and grandchildren Catherine “Kate” Dempsey, Matthew Cottrill, and AJ Cottrill; and Paige McCauley Burgess (Dean), and grandchildren Paisley Brewer Downing (Stephen), Jon-Eric Brewer and Taylor Stallings.

A memorial service will be held at Tramway Baptist Church on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 6 p.m. Visitation will take place after the ceremony. A graveside service will be held at Spring Hill United Methodist Church on a later date.

SILER CITY — Malcom Talmadge "Pete" Ray, 80, of Siler City died Monday (6/9/14) at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

He was born in Franklin County on July 10, 1933, the son of Bunny C. and Eva (Williams) Ray. He was retired from Goldkist Hatchery after 40 years of service as a manager. He was a member of the Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, usher and had worked with the Royal Rangers boys' ministry. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice (Glover) Ray; one daughter, Jeanette R. Stinson and husband Roy of Siler City; sons, Malcolm Danny Ray and wife Kay of Siler City, and Dale Ray and wife Ann of Bear Creek; brother, Nelson Ray and wife Ruth of Pilot; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Entombment will be at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

ABERDEEN — Alvin E. Davis Jr., 55, of Aberdeen, died Saturday (6/7/14) at his residence.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines with the Rev. Archie Stevens officiating.

He was born Jan. 18, 1959, in Cumberland County. He attended grammar school in Aberdeen and Southern Pines and graduated from Pinecrest High School. He was a graduate of Sandhills Community College and UNC-Chapel Hill, and earned his Master's Degree in English Education from Pembroke State University. He taught at Hoke County High School and Pinecrest High School.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie E. Davis, and his brother, Dwight J. Davis.

BEAR CREEK — Leona Lynch Morgan, 71, of Bear Creek died Monday (6/9/14) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

She was born in Chatham County on May 14, 1943, the daughter of Zeb and Ruth (Stevens) Lynch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Morgan; daughter, Janice Morgan; her parents; and brother, Mike Lynch.

She is survived by two sons, Ricky Morgan (Samantha Morgan) of Bear Creek and Randy Morgan and wife Christa of Siler City; six grandchildren; sisters, Linda Faye Mote of Liberty, and Judy Carol Mooneyhan and husband Gerald of Bear Creek; and brothers, Jack Lynch and wife Lois of Staley, William Eugene Lynch of Burlington, Jimmy Leon Lynch and wife Linda of Asheboro and Bobby Wayne Lynch of San Diego, Calif.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2 until 3 p.m. at Piney Grove United Methodist Church in Siler City. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Judith Drye and the Rev. Jim Folks officiating. Burial will be at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

PITTSBORO — Camelia E. Scurlock, 93, of 154 Adolph Taylor Road, Pittsboro, died Monday (6/9/14) at her residence.

SANFORD — Charles L. Murchison Jr., 76, of 307 Nairn Ct., Upper Marlboro, Md., formerly of Sanford, died Thursday (6/5/14) at Magnolia Center Nursing Home, Lantham, Md.

He is survived by a son, Charles Christopher Murchison of New York; daughter, Betty Armwood of Upper Marlboro, Md.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Mary Jane Battle (Albert) of Colon; sister-in-law, Margaret McGee; and a host of neices, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Wake will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
