ELIZABETH WALKER WELLS DENNING (VI)

SANFORD — Elizabeth Walker Wells Denning died Wednesday, September 25, 2013.

She was one of three children by John Warner Wells and Elizabeth Walker Wells (V). Mrs. Denning was born in Smithfield, North Carolina.

Beth attended St. Margaret’s School for Girls in Virginia. She graduated from Peace College in Raleigh and earned her BA in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in college, Beth was named to the May Court. She made her debut in 1969 with the Terpsichorean Club of Raleigh.

In Beth’s younger years she was an avid athlete. She was a talented modern dancer, swimmer, and tennis player.

Beth married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Charles Vance Denning. They began their married life together in Albany, Georgia with the US Navy Dental Corp. and moved to Sanford to start a family.

Beth’s deepest passion was the care, love, and well-being of her children and family. Beth had a special way with people and the gift of touching other people’s lives. Her zest for life radiated through everything and everyone she came in contact with.

Beth was very involved and passionate about her community and others in need. Beth never met a stranger and had a genuine concern for the well-being of others. She was actively involved in many charities. She served on the Boards of Directors for the Group Home of Lee County and for the Lee County Humane Society. She was on the Executive Cabinet for Meredith College. She was an active leader in the fundraising campaigns for Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh. She was an active leader in the North Carolina Historical Society.

Throughout her life, Beth had a passion for gardening and flower arranging. She was a long-time member of the Sanford Garden Club. She loved to read and was a loyal member of the Sanford Literary Club. Beth also had a love of fashion and was a model in her younger years.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Vance Denning; two daughters, Elizabeth Walker Fernandez and husband Joseph Alexander Fernandez of Charlotte, and Christine Vance Denning of Chicago IL; two brothers, Edward Warner Wells of Columbia, SC and Nicholas Walker Wells of Charlotte; and two grandsons, Jackson and Walker Fernandez. A special recognition to the love and devoted care of Mrs. Sara Cotton.

The family will receive friends and family at the home on Friday, September 27, 2013 from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm.

A graveside celebration of life will be held at Buffalo Church Cemetery on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sanford Humane Society.

MELVIN RAYMOND WOOTEN

CAMERON — Funeral service for Melvin Raymond Wooten, 65, who died Tuesday (9/24/13), was held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Broadway with the Rev. George Brice officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Organist was Nancy McCurry. The Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church Choir sang two selections.

Pallbearers were Tony Cox, Roger Eagle, Ralph Mangum, Henry Randolph, Jimmy Randolph and Bobby Rosser.

MELISSA J. WILLIAMS

PLAINFIELD, N.J. — Melissa J. Williams, 22, died Thursday (9/19/13) in New Jersey.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Glorious Church of God in Sanford with Pastor Larry J. Murchison officiating. Burial will follow at Minter Cemetery.

Viewing will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Watson Memorial-Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary and the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Emmanuel Glorious Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Joe and Leola Williams.

She is survived by two daughters, Aniah Brown and Sanna Newton; her parents, Joe and Theresa Williams; sister, Teikda (David) Washington of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Joe Williams of Plainfield, N.J., and Michael (Charis) Williams of Rock Hill, S.C.; maternal grandparents, Hazel Cash and Morris (Ursula) Cash; and a host of other relatives and friends.

SILER CITY — Thomas Burnette, 74, of 201 Maulden Drive, died Wednesday (9/25/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts & Son Funeral Home in Siler City.

MARY JO SLOAN PERKINS

CARTHAGE — Mary Jo Sloan Perkins, 69, died Thursday (9/26/13) at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Yates Thagard Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. Sammy Frye officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Yates Thagard Baptist Church.

Born in Columbia, S.C., she lived with her family in many states and overseas. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Sloan and Mary Louise Spirers Sloan. She was a nursing instructor at Sandhills Community College for 32 years. She was a member of Yates Thagard Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bill Perkins; a daughter, Rita Oldham and husband Alan of Pinehurst; two sons, Todd Perkins and wife Susan of Sellersville, Pa., and Brian Perkins and wife Brandi of Clewiston, Fla.; one sister, Dr. Sarah Sloan Kreutziger and husband Dr. Keith of New Orleans, La.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests that any nurses present wear nursing pins or crosses.

SANFORD — Atlas Lee Fallin, 56, died Sunday (9/22/13).

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today Friday at Faith Baptist Church in Cameron. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

He was born in Lee County to Annie Elizabeth Johnson Fallin and the late Willie Lee Fallin. He worked with King Heating & Air. He was preceded in death by a son, Sampson Lee Fallin.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Glenda Malone Fallin; son, Charles Atlas Fallin of Sanford; daughters, Susan M. Raybon and husband Glen of Willow Springs, and Cheryl Fallin of Cary; one sister, Elizabeth Rampey and husband Robert of Sanford; and three grandchildren.
