VIRGINIA GRAY POWERS POE

SANFORD — Funeral service for Virginia Gray Powers Poe, 90, of Sanford, who died Monday (1/13/14), was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sanford Church of God by the Rev. Eugene Powers and the Rev. David Kimbrell. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

During the service, son-in-law Frank Holder gave the eulogy. Special music was played, soloist was Rev. Kimbrell and Trent Archer was the pianist.

Pallbearers were Tommy Byerly, Irvin Garrett, Tim Mercer, Tommy Poindexter, Scott Shelton and Lee Ray Thomas. The Sanford Police Department served as honorary pallbearers.

CHESTER DAVIS PATTERSON

SANFORD — Chester Davis Patterson, 68, died Friday (1/17/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was a native of Harnett County, son of the late Clyde Hasty and Janie Elizabeth Christian Patterson. He attended Hillview Christian Church and worked for Spanco and Parkdale Textile Mills.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Elizabeth Lawrence Patterson; two stepsons, Glen Byrd of Broadway and Leslie Lee Byrd of Sanford; two sisters, Judy Kelly and husband Hal, and Charlotte Uzzell and husband David, all of Sanford; and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hillview Christian Assembly Church with Pastor Ray Bodin and Chaplain Joel Cameron officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family will be at the home of Charlotte and David Uzzell, 535 Poplar Springs Church Road, Sanford.

MILDRED BRAFFORD COVERT

PITTSBORO — Mildred Brafford Covert, 91, of Pittsboro, died Friday (1/17/14).

She was born on Jan. 1, 1923, in Chatham County to the late Nellie Maude Parrish and Edward Roy Brafford Sr. and married to the late John Royal Covert Sr. She was the oldest living member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, LaVan Gunnels.

She is survived by her children, Ethel Lindley, Johnny Covert and Brenda Gunter; sister, Elsie Jones of Siler City; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church or Community Hospice of Siler City.

PAUL THURMAN YOW SR.

SANFORD — Paul Thurman Yow Sr., 84, of Sanford died Thursday (1/16/14) at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation.

Born in Lee County on Sept. 16, 1930, he was a son of the late Hampton Street Yow and Mossie Mashburn Yow; son, Paul Thurman Yow Jr.; sister, Wilma Womack; and brother, Leon Paige Yow. He was a Navy veteran and attended Miracle Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Sherri Mahrie; son, John Allen Yow; one grandson; sisters, Edith Routh and Mabel Bremer, both of Texas, and Carol Y. Brown and husband “Bob” Brown of Sanford; brother, Robert “Bobby” Yow of Sanford; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will held at a later date.

STANLEY EDWARD BLANCHARD

FUQUAY-VARINA — Stanley “Jack” Edward Blanchard, 92, of Fuquay-Varina, died Friday (1/17/14) at the William M. Dunlap Hospice Center for Caring in Raleigh.

He was born in Harnett County, the son of the late Floyd Stanley and Mattie Ausley Blanchard. He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II. He worked as a tobacco farmer. He was a member of Christian Light Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Hilda B. Brown and Gertrude B. Arnold.

Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christian Light Christian Church Cemetery in Fuquay-Varina with the Rev. Jimmy Elliott, the Rev. C. Paul Jones and the Rev. Bob Coats officiating. The family will receive friends in the church cemetery from 2 to 3 p.m. and other times at the home.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rachel W. Blanchard; sisters, Ruth Baucom, Louise Johnson, Florie Smith and JoAnn Betts, all of Fuquay-Varina, and Iris Johnson of Lillington; and 18 nieces and nephews.

LEONA EUBANKS BROWN

SANFORD — Funeral service for Leona Eubanks Brown, 93, who died Tuesday (1/14/16) at Rex Health & Rehabilitation Center in Apex, was conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at New Elam Christian Church with the Rev. Peter Doubleman officiating.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist and soloist was Marci Lachabacher.

Pallbearers were Danny Wimberly, Johnny Bridges, Tom Luck, Roy Johnson, Bill Griffin and Johnny Sellars.

The family received friends prior to the funeral service at the church.
