SWANNIE PATTERSON

BROADWAY — Mrs. Swannie Jackson Dawkins Patterson, of Broadway, died Monday (1/20/14) at her home.

She was born in Lee County on Oct. 6, 1929, to the late John Riley Dawkins and Patty Andrews Dawkins. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by siblings Hazel Bailey, Everette Dawkins, Vic Stout, Lewis Dawkins and Lucille Nance. Mrs. Patterson was a 1948 graduate of Deep River School and was the class Salutatorian. She was a hard-working, devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Roy Truman Patterson; two sons, Edwin Patterson and wife Pam of Sanford, and Phil Patterson and wife Linda of Broadway; two daughters, Joan Fowler and husband Dan of Sanford, and Susan Wells of Pinehurst; two sisters, Beulah Minor of Raleigh and Pat Ellis of Sanford; seven grandchildren, Ryan Patterson, Emily Johnson, Lovedy Muniz, Sarah Patterson, Matthew Hinton, Joseph Hinton, Payton Fowler; and seven great-grandchildren, Reece Patterson, Rylan Patterson, Addison Patterson, Savana Johnson, Noah Muniz, Max Muniz and Evie Grace Daniels.

Funeral service will be Wednesday (1/22/14) at 2 p.m. at Holly Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

SHIRLEY MORGAN ALEXANDER

RICHMOND, Ky. — Shirley Morgan Alexander, 73, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday (1/21/14) at Baptist Health-Richmond.

She was born April 27, 1940, in Richmond, Ky., to George Walter and Wilma Bond Morgan, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by her husband, Joseph Alexander III of Richmond; one daughter, Lencia A. Mountjoy (Shawn) of Danville, Ky.; one son, J. Alexander IV (Holly) of Chehalis, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Kip, Hannah, Hunter, and Heath Mountjoy, Tate Sonnenburg (Eric), Joseph Alexander V, Gunnar, Ivy and Addison Alexander; one great-granddaughter, Macy Sonnenburg.

Services for Mrs. Alexander will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2013 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Bishop Scott Sorrenson officiating. Burial will follow at the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Hunter Mountjoy, Kip Mountjoy, Hannah Mountjoy, Heath Mountjoy, Robert Gibbs, Tommy Alexander, and Robert Alexander. Honorary pallbearer is David Aiken.

Donations are suggested to the Madison County Humane Society, 128 C Big Hill Ave, Richmond, KY 40475.

BILLY RAY CARTER

MAMERS—Mr. Billy Ray Carter, age 55, died Monday (1/20/14) at his home in Mamers.

He was born in Sanford on September 17, 1959 to the late Odell and Betty Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Conrad Carter. Billy was employed by both Sears and Lowe's as a salesman in his lifetime.

He is survived by his son, Kevin Carter and wife Jenna; his daughter, Ashley Teets and husband Jeremy; one grandchild, Henderson Teets; brothers, Jeff, Jackie and Warren Carter; sister Carol Martindale; and special friends Rick, Kelly and Mark Deyo.

The memorial service will be Friday (1/24/14) at 11 a.m. at Ephesus Baptist Church with Dr. Rev. David Boroughs officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the services.

PINEHURST — William J. Wittnebert, of Pinehurst, died Sunday (1/19/14).

The son of Julia LaCerra and Lester Wittnebert, he was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Jersey City, N.J.

He graduated from Bordentown Military Institute, enlisted in the U.S. Navy and subsequently attended Princeton University, where he played on the football team. He ran his own business, Fastec Inc., in Connecticut before retiring to Pinehurst.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen West, and a daughter, Ellen Christine. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth of Fairfield, Ct.

SANFORD — Asa Carrington Hooker, son of Angelica Joyshell Powell and Aaron Jamarr Hooker, was born and died Friday (1/17/14) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday (1/24/14) at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends and family at 1899 Nicholson Road, Sanford.

BETTY HARRIS REID

SILER CITY — Betty Harris Reid, 75, of 24 Pine Forest Drive, Siler City, died Monday (1/20/14) at Lisalotte Care Home in Pittsboro.

She was born in Chatham County on Dec. 1, 1938, the daughter of Paul M. and Lizzie Mae (Hackney) Bare. She was a graduate of Silk Hope High School and a member of Rocky River Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She worked at Friendly Florist and later at Family Pharmacy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Reid Sr., and her parents.

She is survived by two sons, Robert H. Reid Jr. and wife Jamie of Sanford, and Stan Reid and wife Lea of Siler City; two sisters, Faye Moses and husband Sonny of Pittsboro, and Paulette Lazar and husband Stuart of Siler City; a brother, Jimmy Bare and wife Ann of Siler City; and grandsons, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road,  Siler City. Funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Greg Burris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

REBECCA 'DOOK' MAE ARTHUR

VASS — Rebecca “Dook” Mae Arthur, 86, of Vass died Sunday (1/19/14) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital of Pinehurst.

A celebration of life and burial was held Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church with Rev. Brian Teeter officiating.

She was born in Vass on May 22, 1927, to Duncan Hector Smith and Margie Clara Foster Smith. She was a long-time member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church and worked with The Pilot newspaper.

She is survived by a sister, Myrtle Anderson of Vass; one brother, Roy Curtis Smith of Vass; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Duncan Hector Smith and Margie Clara Foster Smith; and two brothers, Duncan Smith Jr. and Daniel Robert Smith.
