MARY REBECCA WATSON BROWN

SANFORD — Mary Rebecca Watson Brown, age 94, was born September 17, 1918 and died peacefully at her home on February 12, 2013. She was the only daughter born to the late Lillie Dalrymple Watson and Robert Atlas Watson Sr. of Jonesboro Heights in Sanford, NC. She was happily married to John William Brown on December 14, 1945, and to this marriage were born three children.

After graduating from Jonesboro High School, she began her college education at age 15 at ECTC, presently known as East Carolina University. While attending ECTC, she served as president of the student body, and in 2002, she was honored as the oldest living SGA president. She taught school in Grantham, Carthage, and Jonesboro. Following her teaching career, she and her husband lived in several places, including Charlotte, NC, Columbia, SC and North Augusta, SC. In 1951, they settled back home in Sanford, NC, and in 1956, she helped her husband establish John William Brown Construction Company. Upon the sudden death of her husband in 1972, Mrs. Brown became the owner of the business. She became president after she incorporated the business, and in 1974 sold all shares of John William Brown Co, Inc., thus retiring completely from the business. Once again she focused all her attention on caring for her family members.

She was an active member of Jonesboro Presbyterian Church, serving as elder. She received the Honorary Life Membership in 1986.

Preceding her in death other than her parents and husband were her two brothers, William Gunter Watson and Robert Atlas Watson Jr.

Survivors include her three children, John William “Billy” Brown Jr., Mary Brown Wicker and her husband Jade, all of Sanford, NC, and Rebecca “Beckisue” Brown Joyner and her husband Dan of Ahoskie, NC. Also surviving is her granddaughter, Elizabeth Brooks Wicker, and her fiancé, Kenan Wells Gay, both of Charlotte, NC. She leaves behind “step” grandchildren (Walt and Landis Joyner and Jade W. Wicker Jr. and wife, Dawn), nieces, a nephew and many cousins.

The family wishes to acknowledge the caregivers for the loving and competent care that she received as she battled Alzheimer’s disease during the last years of her life. Mattie Jean Whitley, Selena Burt, Bea Finger, Holly Dishen, Debbie Riddle, Lori Mauldin and Jo Ann Bayer added greatly to the quality of her life.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 14 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Miller-Boles Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 15, at Jonesboro Presbyterian Church. Immediately after the service, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall.

Memorial donations may be made to Jonesboro Presbyterian Church at 2200 Woodland Ave., Sanford, NC, or a charity of one’s choice.
