SANFORD — Dorothy Sasser Bengel Warwick, age 82, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Alamance Hospice Home (one day before her birthday).

She was a native of New Bern, NC, a longtime resident of Carolina Trace and wife of the late Admiral William B. Warwick.

Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her sons, Audrey Leonard “Butch” Bengel III of Gypsum, Colorado, David Allen Bengel and wife Debra of Pineville and Kevin Bengel and wife Vivian of Elon; grandchildren, Misha Bender of Wichita, KS, Kate and Quentin Bengel of Memphis, TN (Quentin now lives in Alabama), Geoffrey and Stephen Bengel of Elon (Stephen now lives in Irongate, NC); sisters, Betsy Davis and husband Robert of New Bern, NC, Becky Hedrick and husband Frank of Navarre, FL; brothers, Robert H. Sasser and wife Catherine of Pinehurst, NC, Douglas Sasser and wife Martha Kay and David Sasser and wife Deborah, all of Raleigh.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her former husband, Audrey Leonard Bengel II and husband, Admiral William B. Warwick; parents, Harrison and Earl Smith Sasser.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, March 9 at Grace Community Church at 1:00 PM (6561 Meridian Dr., Raleigh). She will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

SANFORD — Dean Robin Smith, 52, of 403 Hickory Ave., Sanford, died Friday (2/28/14) at his residence.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Smith of Sanford; one daughter, Celia Smith of Sanford; one son, Dean Smith II; fiancée, Philenena Martin; stepson, Jeffrey Martin, all of the home; four granddaughters; three brothers, Roy Smith (Sabrina) of Charlotte, and Aleveolus Smith (Beatrice) and Lamont Smith (Tarese), all of Sanford; three sisters, Barbara Brandon (Joseph) of Eagle River, Alaska, Rosa Serra of Charlotte and Deborah Richmond (Chris) of Sanford; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at East Side Pentecostal Church.

SILER CITY — Danny Charles Moody, 54, of 257 Briar Haven Lane, died Saturday (3/1/14) at the Hospice House in Asheboro.

He was born April 7, 1959, in Chatham County. He graduated from Chatham Central High School and continued his education at Sandhills Community College where he graduated with a degree in Horticulture. He then worked maintaining the golf course at the Siler City Country Club until he went to work for Ronnie King at King's Landscaping. He was a member at Providence Independent Methodist Church where he was active in numerous committees. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Moody and Josephine Kiser Moody; and his brother, Harry Moody.

He is survived by his wife, Fredia Moody; two sons, Logan and Trevor Moody of Silk Hope; stepchildren, Melinda Crotts and husband Stephen of Powhatan, Va., and Catherine Oakley and husband Harry of Chesterfield, Va.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Barbara Moody Dowd of Bonlee and Betty Moody Caudle of Goldston; and brother, David Franklin Moody of Bonlee.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Providence Independent Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian Caldwell officiating.

Memorials can be made to the Building Fund at Providence Church, 1170 Bonlee Bennett Road, or to the Hospice House of Asheboro.

SANFORD — Miguel Higuera Buitron, 43, of Sanford died Monday (3/3/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens Catholic Church. Burial was at the church cemetery.

He was born in Guerrero, Mexico, to Hemberto Buitron and the late Ma Acencion Higuera Valencia.

He is survived by his wife, Gudelia Benitez; daughter, Nancy Buitron of Sanford; sons, Miquel Angel Buitron and Ruben Buitron, both of Sanford; and brothers, Ismael Buitron of Sanford and Alejandro Buitron of Mexico.

SANFORD — Benjamin Becton, 73, of 2009 Woodcrest Drive, Sanford, died Thursday (2/27/14) at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Covington-Becton; daughter, Gloria Becton-Jones (Michael) of New Haven, Conn.; stepdaughter, Bonita Criscuolo of Shelton, Conn.; three stepsons, Jerry Blount Jr., of Oxford, Conn., Shawn Bailey (Cathy) of Vass and Shannon Bailey of Lillington; two sisters, Sula Covington (Willie) and Sheila Bellamy (Henry), all of Goldsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Knotts Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall.

SANFORD — Waldo Lonnie Dickens, 95, of Sanford, died Tuesday (3/4/14) at Parkview Retirement Village.

A celebration of life will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at East Sanford Baptist Church with the Rev. Robbie L. Gibson and the Rev. Bob Yandle officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

After graduating from Sanford High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1938 to 1946. When he returned home to North Carolina, he entered Elon College and earned a B.S. in Mathematics. After teaching math at the high school level for a few years, he moved to Newport News, Va., where he worked at the Newport News Shipyard. In 1963, he was hired by NASA as an Aeronautical Engineer. After retirement from NASA, he worked for Beryl Applied Research. He moved to Sanford in 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Stuckey Dickens; daughter, Cynthia Gail Dickens; sisters, Mary Ellen Leslie, Mozzelle Cox, Pauline Kennedy, Iola Holmes and Effie Dickens; brother, Wilson Dickens; and stepmother, Alma Larson Dickens.

He is survived by his daughters, Marian Colligan and fiancé Mike Harrell of Hampton, Va., and Nina Karp and husband Kenneth Karp of Charlotte; a son, Lonnie Dickens of Newport News, Va.; four grandchildren; sister, Shirley Holly of Sanford; and many nieces and nephews.

FAYETTEVILLE — John Jinnett Jones, 64, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday (3/4/14) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

He was born in Carteret County to the late Robert Leon and Helen Norris Jones.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Roberta Malnati. After graduating from West Carteret High School, he went into the Navy for four years. He got his criminal justice degree from Mt. Olive College. He retired from Cumberland County as a Substance Abuse Counselor.

He is survived by son, Johnathan Jones and wife Candace of Lillington; stepson, Jeromy Delgatto of Newport; brother, Tom Jones and wife Debbie of Newport; sister, Alexis Jones-Waddell and husband Gorman of Kingsport, Tenn.; one granddaughter; a special friend, Brenda Duarte of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home & Crematory with Patrick Broaddus officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Father Thomas Gaul will be doing a special wake during the visitation.
