EVELYN LEE PACE CRANFORD

SANFORD — Mrs. Evelyn Lee Pace Cranford, age 76, of Sanford, N.C. died Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Mrs. Cranford was born on Feb. 18, 1937, in Harnett County, N.C., to the late Howard Vick Pace and Dannie Lee Pace. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Odell Pace. Mrs. Cranford was a member of Barbecue Presbyterian Church. She was employed by Jonesboro Lee Drug Store as a Clerk Pharmacist for many years. For the past several years she worked at Avent & Thomas in Jonesboro in retail sales.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Lee Cranford; three daughters, Patti Hensley and husband Mike of Oak Island, N.C., Alison White and husband Mark of Leland, N.C., and Billie Bethune and husband Jonathan of Sanford, N.C.; three brothers, Eldridge Pace and wife Linda of Sanford, N.C., Edward Pace and wife Pat of Broadway, N.C., and H.T. Pace of Olivia, N.C.; a sister, Lucille Douglas of Broadway, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Austin White and Kash Bethune.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

The funeral will be Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sandy Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

CARTHAGE — John Dowd, 77, of Carthage died Sunday (1/12/14) at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive AME Zion Church in Carthage. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Dowd; five sons, John Dowd Jr. (Jasia), Michael Dowd, James Dowd (Juanita), Jeff Dowd (Victoria) and John Patrick Dowd; and one daughter, Fayette McLaughlin (Wendell).

MARTHA EUGENE MARSHBURN WARD

SANFORD — Martha Eugene “Jean” Marshburn Ward, of Sanford, 87, died Sunday (1/12/14) at Parkview Retirement Center.

She was born on Aug. 31, 1926, in Bladen County to the late Robert Marshburn and Attie Hester Marshburn. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry B. Ward. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, David Ward and wife Theda, and James Ward and wife April, all of Sanford; three daughters, Nancy Ward, and Cathy Ward Watson and husband Rick, all of Sanford, and Debra Hairston and husband Phillip of Greenville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Grace Chapel Church with Dr. Royce Baker officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

SHELBY JEAN GUDGER COLLEY

CAMERON — Funeral service for Shelby Jean Gudger Colley, 77, of Cameron, who died Thursday (1/9/14), was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Hospice Chaplain Archie Stevens, Pastor Al Currie and Noah Gudger officiating. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

Recorded music was played during the service.

Pallbearers were Mark Harrison, Kenny Harrison, Kenny Smith, Michael Harrison, Jeff Huneycutt and Randy Gudger.

GARY LINDSAY SYKES

SANFORD — Gary Lindsay Sykes, 62, of Sanford, died Friday (1/10/14) at his home.

He was born in Lee County, the son of the late Paul Alonzo and Helen Oneta Womack Sykes. He worked as an electrician for Aruaco Panels in Moncure for 35 years.

Graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Mamers with the Rev. Patrick Broaddus officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

He is survived by his sister, Brenda Sykes Campbell and husband John of Liberty; brother, Fred Sykes and wife Carolyn of Sanford; and several nieces and nephews.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Bobby Grey Holmes, 76, of Lemon Springs, who died Thursday (1/9/14), was held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ruth Holder and the Rev. Dewayne Dickerson officiating. Burial followed at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pianist was Anita Leggette. Soloist was Ruth Holder.

Pallbearers were Billy Holmes, Jeff Holmes, Mark Holmes, Kelly Holmes, David McEvers, Jonathan McEvers and Graham Gilmore.

SANFORD — Grace Ann Durham Marcum, 73, of Sanford, died Saturday (1/11/14) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Buckhorn United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She was born in Chatham County, a daughter of the late William Durham and Grace Harrington Durham.

She is survived by her daughter, Angie M. Wojeski and husband Gary of Kinston; sons, Chris Marcum and wife Melissa, and Bill Marcum, all of Sanford; sisters, Frances Duncan and husband Jim of Rock Hill, S.C., and Pat Gauck and husband David of Southport; one brother, Bill Durham and wife Patti of Greenville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

SANFORD — Ludie Carter Harding, 91, of Sanford, died Monday (1/13/14) at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

She was born in Paulding County, Ga., daughter of the late Cauris P. Carter and Ella Mae Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Harding; son, Gene Calvin Carroll; and sister, Nellie Millholland.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Spring Dale Baptist Church in Rockmart, Ga., with the Rev. Bobby McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Harding Sharp of Sanford; sisters, Audie Barber, Maudie Elders and Claudie Harding, all of Rockmart, Ga.; brother, Wilbert Carter of Lythia Springs, Ga.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Broadway. Another visitation will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Alvin Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Rockmart, Ga.

SANFORD — Graveside service for Violet Jeannette “Polly” Holder Sharpe, 89, of Snow Camp, formerly of Sanford, who died Friday (1/10/14), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Pineywood Baptist Church Cemetery in Cameron with the Rev. Paul McClure officiating. Several of those attending also gave comments.

Pallbearers were Michael Allen, Mike Barbour, Richard Wallace, Barry Lamberth, Larry Sharpe and Jimmy Burr.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Sandy Richard High, 66, who died Thursday (1/9/14), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. Eulogy was by Mike Johnson. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Organist was Gail Luck. Soloist was Kim Brown. The congregation also sang.

Pallbearers were Jesse Tillett, Curtis Jackson, Jerry Campbell, Wayne Womble, Oscar Jones, David Caplan and Van Buie.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Margaret Frazier Caldwell Baker, who died Thursday (1/9/14), was conducted Monday at Cameron Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Whitney Wilkinson officiating. Entombment followed at Lee Memory Gardens Chapel mausoleum.

The congregation sang.
